OK, it has been starting for some time now, but a campaign is now coming, I believe, to stifle dissent, once and for all.

Last night I watched PBS's "Nixon" from 1992 (an old videotape in my collection I had not seen in years). Nixon's GOP then had at least a few principled individuals, whatever disagreements on policy we would (and did) have with them. And the media (then) would not back off because of threats.

Another movie reference: As Sam Elliott as Gen. John Buford said in the movie "Gettysburg" the evening before the first day of battle, "The Rebs will hit us at first light. (He points at the horizon at dusk.) Keep a clear eye." Anyone who has seen the movie, and heard how he said it, has not forgotten it, and knows it applies here.

3. Heartbreaking. Thanks, that was moving.
You know, it's not just the abominable beasts who never cared from day one about deaths of those not in their "class" who do not care that numbers mean death for others (much younger than me). I let it go that they are individual and loved human beings, too. Thanks for your post.

2. I think there needs to be a declaration of "not at war" so
they can't keep using war powers as an excuse...

4. Exactly right. The Democrats need to make a new un-IWR
We need to trim the war administration's sails.

5. His comments and those by the others were ominous.
I read that article twice today just to assure myself I wasn't feeling needlessly paranoid.

It sure sounds as though there might be a major Soviet-style clamp-down waiting in the wings.

8. The free press is under severe pressure...
Talk radio and television had their fair share of right-wingers that were accusing the NYTimes of aiding and abetting the terrorists. Did anyone on the Intelligence Committees know this was going on? And did they have no problem with it? This Administration is so bold that no one has the courage to challenge them, it seems. For a while, I thought Arlen Specter might stand up but it was not to be. He has rolled over like a cur dog.
