(CBS/AP) Authorities say two South Florida teens suspected in the beatings of three homeless men have turned themselves in to Fort Lauderdale police, who are investigating the possibility they may have been involved in other beatings.

"We do know there have been other assaults of homeless in Fort Lauderdale," says Capt. Michael Gregory, who heads up the police department's criminal investigations unit.

Police say they are also investigating whether Brian Hooks, 18, and Thomas S. Daugherty, 17, might have had accomplices.

This kid committed some crime (armed robbery? something like that) and his grandmother, who raised him, was interviewed. She said " I think he did it. And if he did, he's a monster and should be locked up!"

Around here if there is any violence among the poor kids it is aimed at other poor kids, sadly. And I know because I teach them and visit them in jail and go to their funerals. Shootings are a problem here, as I guess they are around the country.

Funny how when I looked at them I saw (pardon the expression, it is insensitive) "trailer trash." But having lived a good portion of my early married life in a mobile home, I use it all the time to describe myself!

We're going to be hearing a lot on the MSM about what causes this type of attack. I have no answer, but I doubt it is related to the Republicans. Columbine happened on Clinton's watch. I don't think there is any political element involved in this level of evil. It has always happened and sadly, I believe it always will. We are, at our basest, animals.

my first comment was "A Clockwork Orange." It would be surprising to me if these lads had not watched that movie, numerous times.

A few years back, there was a murder in a nearby community. A gang of young men had identified strongly with a movie, and had even spray-painted the title of the movie on the wall of an abandoned building they "partied" in. And then they killed a guy walking by their hang-out, in a manner almost exactly like the fellows in the movie.

the juveniles aren't eligible for the death penalty. However, the older one should be as much a candidate for the death penalty as anyone I've ever seen. The problem I see with that is he would spend his time on death row away from the general population, where he undoubtedly learn all about belonging to a less privileged, more vulnerable group of people.

I would imagine the main item the lawyers wanted out of the negotiations was to keep the poor babies in protective custody so that the other prisoners would not deliver the treatment these young men so rightly earned. On the early afternoon of December 22, 1984, four young black men, Barry Allen, Troy Canty, James Ramseur, and Darrell Cabey, boarded a downtown #2 train on a mission to steal money from video arcade machines in Manhattan. They admitted to carrying screwdrivers, which they intended to use for robbing the video game machines. They denied any intent to rob or harm Goetz.

Goetz entered the same #2 train at the 14th street station and sat down near the four teenage men. Ten seconds later, two of the men approached Goetz and asked for (according to the testimony of the four men) or demanded (according to the testimony of Goetz) five dollars. Goetz, pretending not to hear them, asked them to repeat themselves. Canty responded, "Give me five dollars". Witness accounts given at the trial generally agreed that the four men were aggressive and threatening.

Goetz pulled out a .38 five-shot Smith & Wesson and fired five shots with speed shooting (pulling the trigger before the sights are aligned on the target). The first hit Canty in the chest; the second shot struck Allen in his back and came out his arm; the third shot hit the subway wall next to Cabey, the fourth shot hit Cabey in the left side severing his spinal cord; the fifth shot went through Rasmseur's arm and lodged itself in his left side. After surveying the scene Goetz saw Cabey moving on the bench and later confessed to approaching Cabey and saying, "You don't look too bad, here's another", and then attempting to shoot Cabey again in the stomach (with an empty gun). All four survived, though Cabey was paralyzed for life.
