It's high-fear exploitation of the worst kind candy-coated with slick pictures of mostly white women and their children in front of sparkly white picket fenced homes.

The danger from a terrorist attack is never more clear than when we look into the faces of our children. The 9/11 attacks showed all Americans exactly how much we can lose unless terrorism is prevented. Just as parents in the 1950's found themselves forced to discuss the potential of nuclear war with their children, Americans must now find a way to explain to their families why people a world away want to cause such harm. We must not frighten our children unnecessarily, but we cannot allow them to live in safe oblivion indefinitely. As long as the danger of terrorist attacks on American communities lingers, our children must know how to respond in an emergency. As they get older, it is our responsibility to insure their education and civic awareness, in order to reduce the shock of an attack and to help foster a stronger nation. Eventually, they will be called upon to continue the struggle to defend American individuals and ideals in the face of foreign aggressors. By instilling a sense of civic responsibility and political awareness at an early age, they may help protect tomorrow what we have preserved today.

Winston raised his hands above his head, but with an uneasy feeling, so vicious was the boy's demeanour, that it was not altogether a game.

'You're a traitor!' yelled the boy. 'You're a thought-criminal! You're a Eurasian spy! I'll shoot you, I'll vaporize you, I'll send you to the salt mines!'

Suddenly they were both leaping round him, shouting 'Traitor!' and 'Thought-criminal!' the little girl imitating her brother in every movement. It was somehow slightly frightening, like the gambolling of tiger cubs which will soon grow up into man-eaters. There was a sort of calculating ferocity in the boy's eye, a quite evident desire to hit or kick Winston and a consciousness of being very nearly big enough to do so. It was a good job it was not a real pistol he was holding, Winston thought.

Mrs Parsons' eyes flitted nervously from Winston to the children, and back again. In the better light of the living-room he noticed with interest that there actually was dust in the creases of her face.

'They do get so noisy,' she said. 'They're disappointed because they couldn't go to see the hanging, that's what it is. I'm too busy to take them. and Tom won't be back from work in time.'

'Why can't we go and see the hanging?' roared the boy in his huge voice.

'Want to see the hanging! Want to see the hanging!' chanted the little girl, still capering round.

3. we had terror drills

when I was a TA a few years ago. The difference was that the the kids were told they were fire or hurricane drills. Of course, all the older kids knew exactly what they were for.

9/11 really freaked a lot of people out, especially those living in the bedroom communities of NYC.

5. Brainwashing, a family tradition

The repubs must keep reminding people that the Dems. are weak on keeping America safe. Gawd those are dumb words but they sure work. bush constantly says He is keeping americans safe, like we are children and don't understand the Real World. Like he is smarter than the average bird.

Problem No. 1 is the busy public only hear those sound bites. When I mentioned to someone the other day that the 7 potential terrorist(?) might have been set-up by an undercover "agent" he was surprised as he just assumed that the govt. had some real evidence against them and this was a slam dunk. People do get it when you tell them that possibly this was a set-up; no Real evidence so far from the media. They could be guilty, so far the evidence is very weak and yet you know many are only hearing of the arrests and the Sears Tower, scary, scary.

to explain to my kids how people just a few hundred miles away in DC and Texas are into our personal lives up to their eyeballs to see how to frighten the American people next.
