SENIOR US senator John McCain has lamented the loss of innocent life during a US bombing raid in Pakistan, but said such casualties were unavoidable as Washington robustly pursued its "war on terror".

"It's terrible when innocent people are killed, he said. " We regret that. But we have to do what we think is necessary to take out Al-Qaeda, particularly the top operatives."
"We regret it. We understand the anger that people feel, but the United States' priorities are to get rid of al-Qaeda, and this was an effort to do so," the Republican lawmaker said.

"We apologize, but I can't tell you that we wouldn't do the same thing again."

that's funny, i don't remember hearing bush apologize.

1. innocents in PAKISTAN?
it's one thing when you have, say, innocent people in nazi germany who get killed because THEIR GOVERNMENT started a war.
that's one of the many differences in this war on the entire world ... oops, i mean war on terror.

back when we used to go to war on actual countries, there at least was the notion that people in that country were indirectly responsible for their government's decisions. so even if some innocent people died in our invasion of panama, say, at least you could say, well, if they hadn't let noriega rule....

but with the war on terror nonsense, any innocent person anywhere on the planet is at risk, on the off chance that someone in america's bombing planning center gets some bad intel or whatever. someone tips them off that your neighbor is a terrorist and you, too, could be killed on "accident".

THERE IS NO SAFE PLACE ON THE PLANET when those in charge have this attitude.

9. nah, those terrorists only blow up abortion clinics and gov't offices
i think there's still ONE abortion clinic left standing in nebraska.
anyway, remember we don't care so much about our home-grown terrorists.

2. There's no way to defend it as anything but an act of war...
...in violation of the UN Charter.

The only reason Pakistan and the UN will not do anything about it is sheer fear of reprisal. We are indeed bullies on a global scale, and hundreds if not thousands of innocents die at our hands each year. THAT is your America nowdays. And we have the nerve to wonder, "Gosh, why are we so unpopular in the rest of the world?"

As was asked about the German people in the 1940's, future historians will want to answer the question, "Why didn't the American people ever stop him?"

10. I wish the transcript of Face the Nation were up
because I also heard McCain say that he reminded the Pakistanis that we were sending them aid for their earthquake. Like some kind of veiled threat. Like saying "shut up or we'll stop giving you aid."

I will keep looking for the transcript.

11. It's only terrorism
when the one lower on the food chain does it. You can't get much more expendable than a poor Pakistani.

This from a man that was tortured. I love it. I guess I could say I regret some things about that torture...

13. ON Faux this AM....clip of McCain, followed by...Dianne Feinstein....
Edited on Mon Jan-16-06 12:16 PM by Gloria
bloviating along. Why the hell is Dianne Feinstein out there? Why don't we have ONE Democratic spokeperson???

Prior to this little interlude, Wes Clark was on explaining to former traffic reporter Bridget Quinn how Bushco is going to F*ck up the Middle East. AND, he reminded her that he had said before the Iraq fiasco that Iran was the problem. And how Bushco screwed up for the last few years.

The dumb bitch tried to shut that part down, but he kept going. He reminded everybody how Busho hadn't addressed the real problems in the region.

Why the hell isn't Clark the one speaking for this damned party???

Because you can bet the DC Democrats will all "rally around" Bushco and will enable the lies about Iran. They won't try to hold him accountable whatsover, which they SHOULD be doing NOW!
