Fahrenheit 9/11 Marine killed in Iraq.....
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20060628/ap_on_re_us/michigan_recruiter

snip:

Although Plouhar willingly appeared in the movie, which is critical of the Bush administration's actions after Sept. 11, his father said Plouhar didn't realize it would criticize the war.

"I'm proud that my son wanted to protect the freedom of this country whether we all agree with the war or not," he said.

....Yes, Mr. Plouhar I also am comforted to know that there are young people willing to lay their life on the line to "keep America free". But tragically, Iraq had nothing to do with 9/11 or the "war on terror"

Question: When a military has reached the size and global reach such as the US's, are soldiers really "defending" the United States "keeping America free" or are they cogs in the wheel of a global empire?

1. Only speaking of the here and now...
they are cogs in the wheel of a global empire? An empire which if not careful could experience the fate of Rome...

When our soldiers were in Afghanastan they were defending America....now they are the toys of a child like president...

4. Recruiters tried to get me when I was in high school with similar lies
about the music business and how I could be a professional musician in the military, etc. Boy am I glad I didn't fall for it! I might be lying next to Sgt. Plouhar right now.

Nevertheless, I feel bad for his family.

6. as much as I grieve for all the death and destruction over there--I can't
help but wonder how many of the 2527 acknowledged dead were there because of lies told by recruiters.
how many bodies did he account for? how many wounded, physically or mentally?

7. His family is just as brokenhearted as any other bereaved family
I am so sorry for their loss. This war is a great evil done in our name.

I was surprised the news report mentioned that Michael Moore had made no statement, since their paths had crossed so significantly. Perhaps he has by now. All he needs to do is be a mensch and say what I said -- Sgt Plouhar's death is a tragic loss, a sad waste of a young life.
