TAMPA - Moderation may be considered a virtue by many in American politics, but it can be risky in a Florida Republican primary.
Attorney General Charlie Crist is very aware of that. In a new television ad, Crist, who has fought the dreaded accusation that he's not a true conservative, sets out to bolster his conservative credentials.
At the same time, an independent, pro-Crist political committee, which Crist says has no connection to his campaign, is doing the same thing.
It sent out a mailer last week touching on many of the same issues as Crist's TV ad, portraying Crist as strong on issues that appeal to the religious conservatives who make up a substantial percentage of the Republican vote in Florida.
Crist's overture to conservative voters is aimed at the support base of his opponent in the Republican primary, Chief Financial Officer Tom Gallagher. Gallagher has pitched his campaign intensely toward the religious right, and appears to be getting more support from religious-right political activists than Crist.
