Bush's aid went beyond praise. Talent's campaign staff said the $2,000-a-person event raised $1 million for his expected contest against state Auditor Claire McCaskill, a Democrat who had a slight edge in the latest Post-Dispatch poll.
The poll of 800 likely voters in Missouri also showed that 54 percent did not think the Iraq war was worth it and that 60 percent wanted at least some troops to come home.
The president said he was confident that Americans would stick with their troops and the Bush administration's approach to the war on terrorism. "A generation of Americans will be safer for it, and Jim Talent understands the stakes," Bush said.
