Personally, I'd like to see the F-U headers deleted. Makes us look bad. |
|
I think it makes us sound like a bunch of lunatic 7th graders when in the same screen I see F-U to 2 different people, and I'm just in here for a minute to skim through.
I don't want to be a prude, but, I'd like this place to be taken seriously, too.
Maybe we could keep them out of the subject lines and just allow them in the body of the messages?
Am I alone on this one?
There are so many brilliant, informed, patriotic people in here educating me every day, that I hope all those 7th grade insults don't drive people out of here who are just looking. Imagine someone who's finally decided they think B*** is a fake. They come in here to finally see what the libruls knew all along, and they find F U to major government officials.
We just lost them.

2. I don't agree. Sometimes a good "Fuck the Nitwit" or "Screw Deadeye |
|
Dick" or "Bite My Ass, Rummy" is good for the soul.
Who cares what "they" think? And there's always the ignore button if it bugs you, personally.

My Mother, who is a very liberal woman of means, lasted about a minute when she checked out DU.
She supports all manner of causes, but not this one. And precisely for the use of "Fuck" in too many subject lines.

24 Years in the Navy and "fuck" is just part of the vernacular. A noun, a verb, an adjective, even an adverb. I appreciate your two cents worth and believe it or not I attempt to use profanity which enhances the message, however, I too read some posts where nothing at all is added.

|
You're over reacting. I agree that it doesn't shine the best light, but I think most DU readers are bright enough to realize that a message board as populated and active as DU is bound to run into a less-than-flattering post every now and then, and that they don't represent the policies or opinions of the board in general. If you were at a party and one raging drunk asshole started screaming incoherent obsenities, would you assume he was a represented the opinions of every guest at the party?
Give Democratic Underground readers more credit. It's not like this is CU.

OK, now that I've gotten that off my chest, are you still reading?
I agree with you in a sense, but mainly because I was raised to disdain profanity generally. I don't swear much in my speech-- I generally reserve that kind of language for stubbed toes in the middle of the night, etc. But the point I wanted to make is that no matter how distasteful we might find some of the free expression around here, you and I have not let that deter us from finding value here. I think that others are equally able to see past the veneer of coarse language that occasionally characterizes most anonymous forums. And anyone who is seriously put off by harsh language, well, I wonder whether they would react any differently to the demands of dealing with controversial ideas.

Because language DOES matter. And the F-bomb is offensive to many people. Maybe it's a generational thing.

Everybody I've ever known in my life let's off with a good 'fuck you' once in a while. Maybe the church ladies over 70 get offended, but if they've gone so far as to come to DU, then they aren't going back to Bush anyway.

29. And Chaucer used it in "Canterbury Tales". |
|
Do you want to know why? It was the anglo-saxon term for that sex act, which is also known as to fornicate. Since fuck is considered vulgar, it's because it was the language of the underclass, whereas fornicate was the language of the lords.
Language is just that language. It's means is to communicate. If some words are considered dirty that mean the same thing as other words, it's because we haven't overcome our classism.

17. I think profanity has its place |
|
and I've wondered occasionally at the purpose of using it as a header, but, then again, it doesn't really bother me either.
I tend to use it judiciously in my own posts--I find that swear words, properly placed, add something to the whole. Which is why the best rants often aren't going to fit into the proper LTTE format...cleaning them up steals some of their thunder.
But, then again, that's just my take on it.

30. Any use of the "F" word that I have read on DU has not been |
|
profane. Profanity is when any words or combination of them make you feel dirty and abused. That is true profanity and I know those who can use perfectly acceptable words in that manner.

20. I don't like it, but not because of how it makes us look |

but because I think it's disrespectful of us DUers.
Same with any form of inordinate forcefulness of expression. It's like demanding people pay attention to their post instead of letting people decide for themselves.

And NO, I don't think one sounds ignorant by saying the F word.
For some that's a way to release steam (no pun intended) or expresing something that is profoundly wrong. Now, If someone is telling someone to F-off I expect this to be said to a freeper and not a DU'er.

28. And besides, don't Americans have the right to say "F-U"... |
|
...to "major government officials?
What is with this obsequious attitude toward "major government officials"? I thought that "major government officials" were supposed to be OUR employees? I can't tell "major government officials" who have used OUR tax money to start a fraudulent and illegal war in MY name to kill tens of thousands of people to FUCK OFF?
:wtf:
I am ALWAYS amazed when people are more outraged by some perceived breach of etiquette than they are by THE DEATHS OF THOUSANDS OF INNOCENT PEOPLE.
Call me crazy, but that's how I feel.
And Bob Schieffer can still kiss my ass.
