Was Bob Woodward Slam-Dunked?
by Robert Parry

..............

When Bush pressed - "George, how sure are you?" - the CIA director supposedly threw his arms up again and declared, "Don't worry, it's a slam dunk!" According to Woodward, Bush then cautioned Tenet several times, "Make sure no one stretches to make our case."

Almost a year later, in an exclusive interview with Woodward on Dec. 11, 2003 - after the U.S. invasion of Iraq had come up empty in the search for caches of WMD - Bush confided to Woodward that Tenet's assurance had been "very important" in the presidential decision to go to war.

When the "slam-dunk" story appeared in Woodward's 2004 book, Plan of Attack, it immediately made Tenet the butt of endless jokes and portrayed Bush as the skeptical leader who wanted the truth but was misled by his subordinates.

...................

However, in the two years since publication of Plan of Attack, other evidence has emerged suggesting that Woodward was acting less as an objective journalist than as a stenographer taking down the preferred history of Bush's inner circle. The legendary hero of the Watergate scandal may have been the one who was slam-dunked.

2. My vote: compliant shill
Bob likes the limelight. Bush's numbers were good. Bob jumped on the Love Train and profited by supporting Bush. The more Bob helped spread their lies the more he got access to their inner circle and then he got to write another book or article defending them. A vicious circle but Bob signed up for it.

4. Naah...Woodward was a willing participant in the sham
designed to make it appear that we went to war based on Tenet's comment.

5. I LOVE this article, I have always thought the "slam-dunk" story was hype
it sounded so out of character for Bush, the concerned leader. When you read Cobra II and Assassin's Gate and One Percent Doctrine, these guys didn't care IF we should go to war with Iraq. They only cared about how to SELL the war in Iraq.

Reminds me of the Lincoln quote, something about: any man can stand adversity, if you want to know a man's true character, give him power. Was this Woodward's way of repenting bringing down a president of his own party? My gawd, seems Freud would have a heyday with what Bob did then and has done now.
