Independence from the greatest evil around/

Flag Burning Day/ Flag Burning Day/
Happy International Flag

"A lot of Americans get whipped up about the notion of anyone “desecrating” the American flag. But remember, this is International Flag-Burning Day, a time to burn all flags representing every nation. But the lyrics of the song speak for themselves. I’m sad to say that the Troublemakers appear to be defunct post-Katrina. However, I have it on good authority that bandleader Dr. Paul Gailunas plans to return to the Crescent City in September with his wife, the talented filmmaker Helen Hill, and their son Francis Pop. That is also cause to celebrate." - http://.b.rox.com

#20) PET SHOP BOYS "I'm With Stupid"

Album: Fundamental
Last Month: New Entry Weeks On Chart: 3

Is Stupid really this stupid/
or a different kind of smart?/
Do we really have a relationship/
so special in your heart?/
Oh-oh, I'm with Stupid. Oh-oh, I'm with Stupid
http://www.lyricsandsongs.com/song/676759.html

"Working together for the first time since the 1988 single "Left to My Own Devices," the Pet Shop Boys and producer Trevor Horn partner together for Fundamental, an extremely well-crafted effort that is more of its time message-wise than any previous PSB album. Fundamental is heavily influenced by Tony Blair's allegiance to George W. Bush and his dragging of the U.K. into the Iraq War, which has left previously Labour Party-loving vocalist Neil Tennant bitter and disillusioned. Fully aware that the Pet Shop Boys would sound ridiculous if angry and punkish, Tennant and partner Chris Lowe show restraint, putting their venom on simmer on the most riveting songs and searching for a reason not to stick their head in the sand elsewhere... Better still is infectious and uptempo "I'm with Stupid," which casts Blair and Bush as irresponsible lovers who grin and pose while having their way with the world... For Pet Shop Boys fans who lean to the left and are skeptical about the future, this is as close to heaven as they want to be." - www.allmusic.com

4. So Melissa Etheridge wrote her song just for the movie?
That's good because it means it'll be qualified for an Academy Award nomination. Academy Award will only consider songs specifically written for the movie which would include opening/closing credit songs.

5. That's what is indicated on her fan site.
I didn't even think of that. Their aren't a lot of original songs to get nominated, so maybe it will be nominated and mean more publicity for the film later in the year. (I imagine the film itself might get nominated in documentary category.)

11. They aren't MTV stars
But this song, sung to the tune of When Johnnie Comes Marching
Home,
is one of the most powerful you will ever hear:
From "Sing Along With The Republicans" by The
Freedom Toast

When Johnny Comes Rolling Home

When Johnny comes rolling home again, IRAQ, IRAQ!
We know he’ll never roam again, IRAQ, IRAQ!
His legs don’t work, and his shoulder droops.
But that’s OK: we support the troops.
We will all think twice when Johnny comes rolling home.

When our boy comes back broke and bent, IRAQ, IRAQ!
We’ll wonder why he ever went, IRAQ, IRAQ!
Dick Cheney got all his contracts done
And Dubya proved he’s the favorite son
But we’ll all think twice when Johnny comes rolling home.

The White House thinks they did the job IRAQ, IRAQ!
They never heard our Johnny sob, IRAQ, IRAQ!
They never found what they went to find,
And they give no thought to those left behind.
Bush will NOT be there when Johnny comes rolling home.

We wait for Johnny to arrive, IRAQ, IRAQ!
His spirit’s more dead than alive, IRAQ, IRAQ!
He joined up to fight for the U S A,
He never thought he’d get tossed away
And we’ll all wake up when Johnny comes rolling home!

8. www.myspace.com/tonedeafradio for two antiwar songs that
I wrote. Feel free to download. With tongue planted firmly in cheek heres my lyrics for Here's To War. A song I wrote during the days of the Iraq invasion. I remember hearing about reporter David Bloom dying and that afternoon these lyrics came to me.

"Here's To War"

Well here's to war. Can you tell me what it's for? Well if it's to make me free I guess that's good enough for me.
You speak of freedom yet you blew off both my legs. Then you laid my soul to rest. Now I've got peace on earth instead.
How blind could I be? Now I've got no eyes to see. I've no tongue with which to speak. I've no breath with which to breathe.
What was I thinking? I must of been completely stoned. I must of never really known. The trick of war is coming home.
I wanna thank the media for digging up the truth. For telling young boys they're bulletproof and that war is good for you.
How strong could I be? Stronger than my enemy? Stronger than a falling leaf. Now I'm so quiet so at peace.
Just kicking up daisys from my bed beneath the stars. I wish you'd seen inside my heart. I wish you'd seen me blown apart.
Oh war I love you. I love the way you spun me round. Love the way you brought me down. The way you put me in the ground.

15. Add "Both Sides of the Gun" by Ben Harper...
In particular, the song "Black Rain"

Black Rain
Ben Harper

Written by: Harper/Yates

You left them swimming for their lives
Down in new orleans
Can't afford a gallon of gasoline
With your useless degrees and contrary statistics
This government business is straight up sadistic

Now you don't fight for us
But expect us to die for you
You have no sympathy for us
But still i cry for you
Now you may kill the revolutionary
But the revolution you can never bury

Don't speak to us like we work for you
Selling false hope like some new dope we're addicted to
I'm not a desperate man but these are desperate times at hand
This generation is beyond your command

And it won't be long
'til the people flood the streets
To take you down
One and all
A black rain is gonna fall

If you voted for the man you're wasting time.
He's got his fingers dipped in everyone's pie.
The news can't wait to promote all the bullshit the government is selling.

I've got this plan in motion, countdown.
Assassinate, terminate, smack down.
There's a war in my head and it needs to be said.
If they think they can take me they're dead.

19. Add "Your Flag Decal Won't get You Into Heaven Anymore"
John Prine rocks- here's the chorus

"But your flag decal won't get you into heaven anymore
They're already overcrowded from your dirty little war
Now Jesus don't like killin', no matter what the reasons for
And your flag decal won't get you into heaven anymore".

My husband heard this and thought it was one of Prine's new songs, but it's from long ago. Funny how slapping a flag decal somewhere never loses it's charm for those who don't want to think any harder than what they are told.

21. Sam Stone
"Flag Decal" is great. I'm a big fan of "Sam Stone," too.

Sam Stone
©John Prine

Sam Stone came home,
To his wife and family
After serving in the conflict overseas.
And the time that he served,
Had shattered all his nerves,
And left a little shrapnel in his knee.
But the morphine eased the pain,
And the grass grew round his brain,
And gave him all the confidence he lacked,
With a Purple Heart and a monkey on his back.

Chorus:
There's a hole in daddy's arm where all the money goes,
Jesus Christ died for nothin' I suppose.
Little pitchers have big ears,
Don't stop to count the years,
Sweet songs never last too long on broken radios.
Mmm....

Sam Stone's welcome home
Didn't last too long.
He went to work when he'd spent his last dime
And Sammy took to stealing
When he got that empty feeling
For a hundred dollar habit without overtime.
And the gold rolled through his veins
Like a thousand railroad trains,
And eased his mind in the hours that he chose,
While the kids ran around wearin' other peoples' clothes...

Repeat Chorus:

Sam Stone was alone
When he popped his last balloon
Climbing walls while sitting in a chair
Well, he played his last request
While the room smelled just like death
With an overdose hovering in the air
But life had lost its fun
And there was nothing to be done
But trade his house that he bought on the G. I. Bill
For a flag draped casket on a local heroes' hill.

Repeat Chorus

20. SARAH MCLACHLAN "World's On Fire" should be in Top 10 for this video alone
Edited on Mon Jul-10-06 04:01 PM by Up2Late
Check it out at this blog entry at the Alternet.org website: <http://www.alternet.org/blogs/video/38422/>

Sarah McLachlan - World On Fire

Posted by David DeGraw at 10:22 AM on July 2, 2006.

Why spend millions on a music video when you can make a very effective one for $15 and give the rest to humanitarian causes?

In this powerful video, Sarah McLachlan breaks down how the money would have been spent and how the money was spent:

In LA, catering for a one day shoot = $3000

But this time, $3000 has bought 10950 meals for street children in Calcutta

$5000 = cost of make-up and hair for one day or

$5000 = one years schooling for 145 girls in Afghanistan

<http://www.alternet.org/blogs/video/38422/>

A complete list of Sarah's donations can be found here.

Most Expensive Music Videos:

"Scream" - Michael Jackson & Janet Jackson: $7,000,000

"Victory" - Puff Daddy: $2,700,000+

"Heartbreaker" - Mariah Carey: $2,500,000

"What's It Gonna Be" - Busta Rhymes: $2,400,000+

"Larger Than Life" - Backstreet Boys: $2,100,000+

"Bedtime Story" - Madonna: $2,000,000+

23. Son Volt - Okemah & the Melody of Riot
An album often overlooked because it was released a year before the latest crop of "protest rock" CDs, is the sublime Okemah & the Melody of Riot by the latest incarnation of Son Volt.

Okemah is a small town in eastern-central Oklahoma that's famous as the birthplace of Woody Guthrie, who serves as the guiding spirit of Son Volt's latest album.

Of particular interest to DU'ers - songs like "Jet Pilot," (the best lyrical attack on Dubya yet) "Atmosphere," "Six String belief," and "Endless War."

Get this album!

If you liked this thread, some time ago I wrote a diary about re-invigorated music lyrics (http://www.dailykos.com/story/2005/10/8/215353/404) which you'll probably like as well.

Plenty of lyrics excerpted from some eerily germain 60's/70's rock.

26. I don't understand how anyone can compile one of these w/no R.E.M.
How about the reworked "Bad Day" that they released in 2003?

A Public service announcement followed me home the other day
I paid it nevermind. Go away.
Shits so thick you could stir it with a stick
Free Teflon whitewashed presidency
We're sick of being jerked around
Wear that on your sleeve

Broadcast me a joyful noise unto the times, lord,
Count your blessings.
We're sick of being jerked around
We all fall down.

Have you ever seen the televised St. Vitus subcommittee prize
Investigation dance? Those-ants-in- pants glances.
Well, look behind the eyes
It's a hallowed, hollow anesthesized
"save my own ass, screw these guys"
smoke and mirror lock down

Broadcast me a joyful noise unto the times, lord,
Count your blessings.
the papers wouldn't lie!
I sigh. Not one more

Its been a bad day.
Please dont take a picture
Its been a bad day.
Please

We're dug in the deep the price is steep.
The auctioneer is such a creep.
The lights went out, the oil ran dry
We blamed it on the other guy
Sure, all men are created equal.
Here's the church, here's the steeple
Please stay tuned--we cut to sequel
Ashes, ashes, we all fall down.

Broadcast me a joyful noise unto the times, lord, Count your blessings.
Embrace the lowest fear/Ignore the lower fears
Ugh, this means war.

Its been a bad day.

Broadcast me a joyful noise unto the times, lord,
Count your blessings.
We're sick of being jerked around
We all fall down.

Its been a bad day...

37. Final Straw is good, I wouldn't call it their best political work
but to Stipe's credit, he wrote it and got it out real quick when the Iraq invasion was first happening with a free download, to let everyone know where he stood.

In terms of R.E.M. political albums, Lifes Rich Pageant stands out tremendously.

My top picks for their (clearer) statement tunes throughout their career:

Little America
Begin the Begin
Cuyahoga
Exhuming McCarthy

Off the last album, the two most direct political songs (besides Final Straw) were, IMHO, "The Outsiders" and "I Wanted To Be Wrong", which, despite the subdued sound, has some pretty cutting lyrics:

You know where I come from
you know what I feel
you're Yul Brenner Westworld
reporting from the field.
I threw it into reverse,
made a motion to repeal.
You kicked my legs from under me,
and tried to take the wheel.

I told you I wanted to be wrong,
but everyone is humming a song
that I don't understand.

now I know that the sun has shined on my side of the street.
the basket of America, the weevils and the wheat.
the milk and honeyed congregation, scrubbed and apple-cheeked
salute Apollo 13 from the rattle jewelry seats.

mythology's seductive and it turned a trick on me
that I have just begun to understand.

I told you I wanted to be wrong,
but everyone is humming a song
that I don't understand.

the rodeo is staged, gold circle goat-ropers and clowns.
a rumble in the third act, tie 'em up and burn 'em down.
we're armed to the teeth, born a little breech;
blue-plate special analysts, cells and SUV's

we can't approach the Allies 'cause they seem a little peeved
and speak a language we don't understand.

I told you I wanted to be wrong
but everyone is humming a song
that I don't understand.

(prop up The Omega Man, we're primed for victory,
God gave us the upper hand, there's honor among thieves.
temper it with arrogance, a dash of sad conceit.
the top's down on the T-Bird, we're the children of the free)

storm into the boardroom of the conquering elite.
did you recognize the madman who is shouting in the streets?
destroy the things that I don't understand
destroy the things that I don't understand.

28. From a largely unknown artist
except in the world of the music I love; The Blues. A fella who calls himself Poppa Chubby, song called "Peace" from a cd entitled Peace, Love, and Respect".
"And when I stop to look around
and see all the people on the ground
I realize I've been brought up wrong
all I've ever been taught was wrong
Rights not might and war's not peace
and wrath does offer no release
double speak is just twice the lies
and there ain't no Old Glory flag to rise
The eagle hides his head in shame
his sons are wicked and to blame
for genocide and poverty they subjugate all humanity
and so it's easy to ignore the cry for peace while they make war
we cry for peace while they make war
we cry for peace while they make war"

Words and music by Ted Horowitz, Dutch Daddy music.

38. I Was Only 19 by The Herd / Redgum
This is a great Australian song, though The Herd version is a cover of the original Redgum song, which was about Vietnam (I think), which is why there is the line "And Frankie kicked a mine, the day that Mankind kicked the Moon."
The song is a fave of mine and seems to fit in with the current climate.

39. Don't forget...
Merle Haggard's "America First." It comes up automatically I think when you go to his webiste.

http://www.merlehaggard.com/

He's been quoted as saying he never understood and didn't go along with Country Music's treatment of the Dixie Chicks.

If the Rethugs have lost Merle Haggard, then they haven't got much farther left to fall.

Why Did Major Radio Stations Try & Silence This Man and His Music?

"With the 3rd anniversary of this ridiculous war in Iraq upon us. ask yourself how come major radio stations around the country including stations in Los Angeles ignored and Blackout this Anti-War record produced by Fredwreck.

Fredwreck in case you don’t know has laced everyone from Ice Cube to Snoop on down to Eminem with incredible tracks.

He’s always been a political type of guy so he got a bunch of West Coast artists together around the start of the Iraq War and they dropped this Anti-war song which they offered up for free download.

They had apress conference and pout out a press release, but then all the big stations which normally play many of the artists featured on this song suddenly went dumb and tried to act like it doesn’t exist.

Feel free to check this cut. It’s the dirty version. You can also find this song featured on the new album Hard truth Soldiers Vol 1 which has been released by Paris."

41. Excellent.
Thanks. I've been trying to find more hip-hop and my google searches haven't come up with much. The commentary reveals a glimpse of why this just might be...
