I sent my dad John Dean's op ed because Dean's a Nixon guy
I thought since he was a Nixon guy, it might have an impact on him.
This is what I got in return. Wow. Just wow. I could use this
awesome think tank to refute every point. Here 'tis:

Subject: 21 Ways to be a Good Liberal

1. You have to be against capital punishment, but support abortion on
demand.

2. You have to believe that businesses create oppression and governments
create prosperity. (This one is really important)

3. You have to believe that guns in the hands of law-abiding Americans are
more of a threat than U.S. nuclear weapons technology in the hands of
Chinese and North Korean communists.

4. You have to believe that there was no art before Federal funding.

5. You have to believe that global temperatures are less affected by
cyclical documented changes in the earth's climate and more affected by
soccer moms driving SUV's.

6. You have to believe that gender roles are artificial but being
homosexual is natural.

7. You have to believe that the AIDS virus is spread by a lack of federal
funding.

8. You have to believe that the same teacher who can't teach 4th-graders
how to read is somehow qualified to teach those same kids about sex.

9. You have to believe that outdoors men don't care about nature, but loony
activists who have never been outside of San Francisco do.

10. You have to believe that self-esteem is more important than actually
doing something to earn it.

11. You have to believe that Mel Gibson spent $25 million of his own money
to make The Passion of the Christ for financial gain only.

12. You have to believe the NRA is bad because it supports certain parts of
the constitution, while the ACLU is good because it supports certain parts of the Constitution
13. You have to believe that taxes are too low, but ATM fees are too high.

14. You have to believe that Margaret Sanger and Gloria Steinem are more
important to American history than Thomas Jefferson, Gen. Robert E. Lee, and Thomas Edison.

15. You have to believe that standardized tests are racist, but racial
quotas and set-asides are not.

16. You have to believe that Hillary Clinton is normal and is a very nice
person.

17. You have to believe that the only reason socialism hasn't worked
anywhere it's been tried is because the right people haven't been in
charge.

18. You have to believe conservatives telling the truth belong in jail, but
a liar and a sex offender belonged in the White House.

19. You have to believe that homosexual parades displaying drag,
transvestites, and bestiality should be constitutionally protected and manger scenes at Christmas should be illegal.
20. You have to believe that illegal Democrat Party funding by the
Chinese Government during the Clinton years is somehow in the best interest to the United States.

21. You have to believe that this message is a part of a vast, right wing
conspiracy.

1. Must be disappointing
Given that that is his response to a piece by John Dean, I would say that it's highly unlikely you'll see many changes in him.

Too bad.

Good for you for trying.

By the way, he just sent me the pic of John Wayne saying
"Why do I have to push one for English?"

My experience, even in Tejas is that you have to push
a number for Spanish, not English.

You create your own reality.

8. That particular piece of Astroturf has been going around for awhile.
Does your dad frequent a lot of conservative sites, or engage in an email list with conservative buddies?

Googling just one of the sentences yielded 161,000 results. :-)

How To Be A Good Republican

That's the liberal Astroturf counterpart to what he sent you. ;-)

It's got to suck when your dad is a diehard conservative. Mine was always a Republican, but he's come around lately and thinks Bush is even more dangerously idiotic than I do.

Thanks a million! Tit for tat and all that.
Dad's a diehard something - this current bunch
in the WH aren't conservative.

My doctor actually apologized to me for not
beliving what I was telling him about Bush.
He voted for him, but now regrets it. Today
he told me the troops need to come home NOW.

Dad, I'm afraid, is too far gone for that.

YOUR DAD..EVEN PUT IT ON AS YOUR SIG LINE...

The only WMD is bush himself.

"The most important thing is for us to find Osama bin Laden. It is our number one priority and we will not rest until we find him."
- G.W. Bush, 9/13/01

"I don't know where bin Laden is. I have no idea and really don't care. It's not that important. It's not our priority."
- G.W. Bush, 3/13/02

"There was no evidence that Saddam Hussein was involved in the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001"
President Bush, September 13, 2003

-"We are ready for any unforeseen event that may or may not occur."
- Governor George W. Bush ( WHERE WAS HE FOR KATRINA?? ) AND 9/11???

-"It isn't pollution that's harming the environment. It's the impurities in our air and water that are doing it."
- Governor George W. Bush

-"For NASA, space is still a high priority."
- Governor George W. Bush

-"We have a firm commitment to NATO, we are a part of NATO. We have a firm commitment to Europe. We are a part of Europe."

10. oh and #4..we had no great world art until gop congresses passed tax laws
Edited on Thu Jul-13-06 12:56 PM by flyarm
permitting no tax on art being brought to the usa from foreign lands..

example..the wallaces of readers digest bought Monet's house in giverney france ..all tax deductable..no tax paid inside the usa..and it allowed the wallaces to bring alot of Monet art into the usa for their personel use ..and given to museaums in this country..with no taxes paid ..on multi million $$ art..in fact when you go to Monets house there are signs..US citizens can give a donation to the foundation ..tax free!

all brought to you by republicans!!

and it goes further...

the rockefellers and duponts both have signs for tax free donations at Versallie france..the castle..and all grounds..and what do they get for being the major donors?? tax free art in france and can bring it here tax free..thank republicans for that...

oh and if you are so disposed ..you can donate as well tax free..but i assure you..you most likely can not afford the paintings and art they have brought into this nation tax free!

at almost all french museaums..you will see tax free signs by prominent Americans..to donate tax free to their art foundations!!

from fly..a just retired flight attendant..who flew france for years!!

to this day..if you bring art into the USA from a foreign nation..there is no duty..

so i guess your dad has a problem supporting american artists and art ..but no problem with the very richest bringing millions and millions of dollars of art into the usa tax free?? and paying with our tax dollars to foundations for the richest to shelter their $$..for most art museaums outside the usa??

!

21. ohh this is also good to send your dad...
i use it with all who nastily call me a "liberal"..i put it on all correspondence with them..i wear my "liberal " pin proudly!!

xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

What do our opponents mean when they apply to us the label "Liberal?" If by "Liberal" they mean, as they want people to believe, someone who is soft in his policies abroad, who is against local government, and who is unconcerned with the taxpayer's dollar, then the record of this party and its members demonstrate that we are not that kind of "Liberal." But if by a "Liberal" they mean someone who looks ahead and not behind, someone who welcomes new ideas without rigid reactions, someone who cares about the welfare of the people -- their health, their housing, their schools, their jobs, their civil rights, and their civil liberties -- someone who believes we can break through the stalemate and suspicions that grip us in our policies abroad, if that is what they mean by a "Liberal," then I'm proud to say I'm a "Liberal."

22. oh and gop has the worst record of job creation since herbert hoover..
gas prices of$76.00 a barrel..and record deficits..and now sitting close to 10 trillion in debt...

and make sure your dad see's this..

Government borrowing trillions against Social Security surpluses

George W. Bush, Commander in Chief, was spending at
record levels, he and his Dad had the highest budget busters on the books, but did you all
realize that he's also borrowing against the social security money?

Democrats and many independent budget analysts note that overall revenues have barely climbed back to the levels reached in 2000, and that the government has borrowed trillions of dollars against Social Security surpluses just as the first of the nation's baby boomers are nearing retirement.

http://www.nytimes.com/2006/07/09/washington/09econ.htm...

ask your dad... when does fiscal conservatism kick in??

tell him we liberals are awaiting the answer..
or the debt for our kids..

24. We've had this debate.
I told him that in good faith, I've been paying into our social contract
all my life. It's what gives him his social security. Basically, he says
that he's got his and that's all that matters. He apparently doesn't care
that I will have to rely on social security.

I've tried to tell him many times that these people are not fiscal
conservatives. I've told him that when Clinton lied, Dems were furious
with him. Why, oh why, do Repubs allow lie after lie? He says they tell
the truth.

I'm beginning to think that Mom had a thing with the milkman.

11. If he wants to play that game, then respond in kind
and send him this:

20 Things You Have To Believe To Be A Conservative

1. Being a drug addict is a moral failing and a crime, unless you're a conservative radio host. Then it's an illness and you need our prayers for your recovery

2. The United States should get out of the United Nations, and our highest national priority is enforcing U.N. resolutions against Iraq.

3. Government should relax regulation of Big Business and Big Money but crack down on individuals who use marijuana to relieve the pain of illness.

4. "Standing Tall for America"; means firing your workers and moving their jobs to India.

5. A woman can't be trusted with decisions about her own body, but multi-national corporations can make decisions affecting all mankind without regulation.

6. Jesus loves you, and shares your hatred of homosexuals and Hillary Clinton.

7. The best way to improve military morale is to praise the troops in speeches while slashing veterans' benefits and combat pay.

8. Group sex and drug use are degenerate sins unless you someday run for governor of California as a Republican.

9. If condoms are kept out of schools, adolescents won't have sex.

10. A good way to fight terrorism is to belittle our long-time allies, then demand their cooperation and money.

11. HMOs and insurance companies have the interest of the public at heart.

12. Providing health care to all Iraqis is sound policy. Providing health care to all Americans is socialism.

13. Global warming and tobacco's link to cancer are junk science, but creationism should be taught in schools.

14. Saddam was a good guy when Reagan armed him, a bad guy when Bush's daddy made war on him, a good guy when Cheney did business with him and a bad guy when Bush needed a "we can't find Bin Laden" diversion.

15. A president lying about an extramarital affair is an impeachable offense. A president lying to enlist support for a war in which thousands die is solid defense policy.

16. Government should limit itself to the powers named in the Constitution, which include banning gay marriages and censoring the Internet.

17. The public has a right to know about Hillary's cattle trades, but George Bush's driving record is none of our business.

18. You support states' rights, which means Attorney General John Ashcroft can tell states what local voter initiatives they have a right to adopt.

19. What Bill Clinton did in the 1960s is of vital national interest, but what Bush did in the '80s is irrelevant.

20. Trade with Cuba is wrong because the country is communist, but trade with China and Vietnam is vital to a spirit of international harmony.

26. send it to dictionary.com for definition of a "red herring"
Almost all his premises are simply NOT TRUE and MADE UP. This is how conservatives operate, they have to create a worldview based on imagination simply to make any argument.
