Poll question: How many of your opinions require profanity to be expressed correctly? |
|
Just out of curiousity. What percentage of the ideas, opinions, theories, notions, and what not that you like to share with people require you to use profanity in order to express them. Bryant Check it out --> http://politicalcomment.blogspot.com

4. It can't be quantified. |
|
Sometimes I think profanity can be used to drive a nail in...other times it is gratuitous. Either way, the DU rules permit it in most instances and limit it in others...we all post inside the confines of those parameters.
Do we really need a poll about this?

I have often heard that a little goes a long way.
If one uses it all the time then it certainly loses any shock value, and I would think any other value. And if every other word is a profanity then it seems that it shows a limited vocabulary, or that one doesn't really know how to express oneself or one's thoughts.

16. To quote Mr. Stipe's excellent Ignoreland: |
|
The information nation took their clues from all the sound-bite gluttons. Nineteen eighty, eighty-four, eighty-eight, ninety-two too, too. How to be what you can be, jump jam junking your energies. How to walk in dignity with throw-up on your shoes
They amplified the autumn, nineteen seventy-nine. Calculate the capital, up the republic my skinny ass. TV tells a million lies. The paper's terrified to report Anything that isn't handed on a presidential spoon, I'm just profoundly frustrated by all this. So, fuck you, man.
Yeah, yeah, yeah. Ignoreland. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Ignoreland. If they weren't there we would have created them. Maybe, it's true, But I'm resentful all the same. Someone's got to take the blame. I know that this is vitriol. No solution, spleen-venting, But I feel better having screamed. Don't you?

21. How many of your opinions require three-syllable adjectives? |
|
The implication that an arbitrary group of slang words are somehow lesser than others and possibly unnecessary is elitist, obnoxious and rude even when framed as a question. The words people tend to refer to as profanity actually do have unique definitions and/or associative connotations, including their being considered to be profanity by some, which make them just as valid as any other word in language. "Feces" does not mean the same thing as "shit."
The classist idea that some language is "lower," or that it is only employed by the ignorant and uneducated, is total fucking hyporcritical bullshit.

29. My panties? That's an evocative phrase. |
|
Of course I have a male name so possibly that's intended as a subtle form of insult?
My own feelings are that sometimes people need to use profanity to express themselves - but other times they use profanity because they are lazy and don't care. That's a very classist opinion to have, I know, but I'm pretty well resigned to it.

31. Again, your issue, not mine. |
|
Having one's panties in a wad is a common expression, used equally towards people of both sexes. Anything else you bring to that, you bring yourself.
Why do people use any words? It's ridiculous to single out profanity as some kind of cop-out, especially when it is no more or less valid a form of expression than any other. So, I call bullshit. Your feelings on profanity use are themselves lazy and classist if you think those are the only reasons profanity is employed, or if you feel that people should choose to express themselves otherwise, so I guess we're in agreement.

Must feel wonderful.
I think it's funny that you would accuse me of being a classist while using sexist language. The reason "panties in a wad" is a good comeback is because it plays on the stereotype that woman are more prone to getting carried away with their emotions. It's sexist plain and simple.
I also have to fault your reading skills. I specifically said that at times profanity is sometimes justified and sometimes a sign of laziness, and you respond with "if you think those aer the only reasons profanity are employed."

39. Profanity is an arbitrary classification of slang. |
|
There is no question that different cultures and races employ different slang. Just because someone calls some of those slang words "profanity" doesn't mean they lose their cultural or racial associations, nor is acknowledging these associations somehow racist in itself. However, discriminating against profanity can be racist, if the discrimination is based on the cultural or racial association rather than on the word itself. I still don't see what you find offensive about that.

You seem to be talking about ALL slang. I thought the question was about typical profanity words, such as fuck, shit, and a handful of other commonly *bleeped* words. (Which I myself occasionally use when I can't think of anything succinct and clever).
The only example that I can think of, that might be a cultural use of profanity, is referring to women as bitches, in the hip-hop community.

I didn't claim that all words considered to be profanity have a racial association, I was saying that treating profanity as somehow lesser than other language can be racist in response to a snarky comment from the OP.
