Israel vows to destroy Hizbullah
Israeli jets continued to bomb Lebanon on Friday, hitting the airport and 18 other targets as Jerusalem threatened to escalate its attack on the besieged country even further. Three people were killed. Hizbullah fired 13 more rockets at northern Israel, but caused little damage.

Hundreds of thousands of Israelis were advised to stock up on essential supplies on Friday morning before returning to their bomb shelters by noon. The residents of northern Israel had emerged from their shelters after a relatively quiet night. On Thursday more than 150 Hizbullah rockets had been fired, killing two people.

Israeli officials and politicians said there would be no end the campaign to destroy Hizbullah and free two Israeli soldiers. They expected Hizbullah to continue to fire some of its estimated 12,000 missiles over the weekend.

The soldiers, Ehud Goldwasser and Eldad Regev, were captured by Hizbullah guerrillas in a cross-border raid on Wednesday to be used to barter for the release of Lebanese prisoners. Eight Israeli soldiers and a Hizbullah fighter were killed in the raid.

1. Israel plans to destroy Hezbollah? How can Israel destroy an idea?
...I think what Israel want to do is destroy a country and specifically Lebanon and all of its people who live there...in other words genocide. At least one world leader admits that also:

<snip>
Chirac says Israel wants to 'destroy Lebanon'
By Philippe Naughton and agencies

President Chirac accused Israel today of wanting to "destroy Lebanon" as the United Nations sent a team of senior diplomats to the region to tackle the crisis caused by Hezbollah's abduction of two Israeli soldiers.

So far Israel has ignored international concerns about its widespread military offensive in Lebanon and also escaped a UN Security Council motion calling for it to halt its operations in Gaza last night when a draft resolution was vetoed as "unbalanced" by the United States.

Israel stepped up its actions in Lebanon today, hitting roads, bridges, fuel supplies and once again attacking Beirut airport to enforce a blockade of the country. Around 60 Lebanese have been killed since the violence flared on Wednesday after a cross-border raid by Hezbollah in which the two soldiers were captured.

M Chirac used his traditional Bastille Day live television interview to criticise the Israeli offensive. "One may well ask if there isn’t today a kind of wish to destroy Lebanon - its infrastructure, its roads, its communications, its energy, its airport," he said. "And for what?

5. In my jaded opinion
this is another case of fanatical religious types hell bent on destroying another religions type that they don't understand and don't want to understand. And they come back with the "woe is me", we are misunderstood, and have been persecuted since the dawn of time. Well quit vowing to destroy anyone who's beliefs are different then your on.

-flame suit on- Please flame at will....

6. No flaming, but a tiny correction
Yes - the religious aspect spurs the hate, but the conflict is over land, purely and simply. It also has become a blood war (you killed my brother so I'm going to kill your sister and so forth).

What's sad is that most Arabs and Israelis ARE brothers - they're both descendents of Shem and are both Semitic.

8. Good reply.
My sentiments exactly. I would love to wake up one day and find a headline that says "Coming soon: Peace!" Pipe-dream, I know.

2. Amazing parallels in the word wars between Israel/Palestine
And Iraq/America.

Kinda hard not to notice it. Rove needs to do a little word dance to put some distance between them.

3. Let's get real....
this is not a war between two countries. This is a holy war, and before it's over the rest of the world will be dragged into it one way or another. This is exactly what PNAC and Bushco wants, and what they have been striving for since taking power (or should I say stealing power).

10. I really have no idea what to expect....
honestly, I have so much distrust for our government and especially Bush himself. He apparently has some sort of insane messiah complex and he thinks he's going to save the world again like the second coming of Christ.

7. No - it's a land war.
Edited on Fri Jul-14-06 10:37 AM by Clark2008
You do realize that there are nearly (35 to 40 percent or so) as many Christians in Lebanon as Muslims, don't you?

It's a land war and a blood war. Not a holy war.

Edited to add stat.

11. There's no doubt in my mind that BushCo will push this
theory.

I wonder how evangelical nuts will feel if they ever learn that Beruit is made up of about 25 percent Christians and Israel is bombing them, too?

13. They don't care...
because if the Rapture comes, the Christians will be "saved" anyway. It's insanity, you can't rationalize it.

17. yes, and Hezbollah is a tiny fraction of the Lebanese govt.
It's like bombing the shit out of one of our cities because someone in one of our fringe groups kidnapped two soldiers.

16. That's a typo.. Israel meant.. "destroy Lebanon".
Apparently you need to kill lots of innocents, bomb entire cities, to get two soldiers. I guess that israeli president isn't worried about his sex scandal anymore.. nothing like the killing of civilians and lots of explosions to divert attention from your own troubles.

It's like that "Star Trek" episode where the black-white guy
and the white-black guy nearly destroy the Enerprise while
fighting their pathetic battle over their infinitesimal
difference, and then discover that in their absence, their
two respective races have destroyed their entire homeworld.
