Does anyone know how long a pre-embryo keeps in the freezer?
Also, how many of the ones stored are estimated to be viable picks for gestation?

I've been looking and can't find any current info. Does anyone know off the top of their head?

3. The thing is... and "at least 12 years..."
Edited on Wed Jul-19-06 07:36 PM by neoblues
Once the couple is successful, at some point probably not too far into the future, they come out of the fridge and are effectively flushed down the old...

Though, no, I don't recall specifically hearing an estimate--though I had it in my head from somewhere they'd last a 'several years'... However, I came across this:

How long are frozen embryos viable?
No one really knows the answer to that question but a report out of Israel now shows that, at least in one case, the answer is at least 12 years...

There was a link to a news article, but the link was dead.

Edit: Add info; dead link; 12 years in subject.

8. Not accurate
Embryos have been thawed quite a few years down the line to add to families or to be implanted as donations to women who want to start families but who are unable to do so with their own eggs.

They're good for at least a decade. My guess is that the viability will decrease by a certain percentage every year, but they're kept in liquid nitrogen very close to absolute zero. It's not like they're subject to the same damage as a package of fish sticks stored in air in a freezer that is set at zero.

15. I emailled my friend james who i do alot of advocacy with.
Hopefully he'll provide the answer. I also asked him for a link. I got that misinformation from another article about some wings nuts holding the a 16 day vigil against frozen embryos.

Here is a link that you all may link though . www.stemcellscience.org It's a good jumping on point for resources. Once again I appologize for my confusion. Like President Cruel my evening med's haven't kicked in yet.

13. Cryo-biology changes constantly...
so Im not sure theres a definitive answer. A recent breakthrough in one aspect of it involves something called a "glass-transition level". Feel free to google that up, interesting reading.

14. When I worked on tissue culture
we weren't sure we could get anything back that was older than 7 years. At that point I would have to defrost the culture, regrow it, and refreeze it.

Obviously its not the same as embryos since you can't refresh the culture. You need to get back ALL the cells that have been frozen. But the technology is not terribly different. The truth is nobody really knows and its not easy to have an "ethical" study on it since people are so uneasy about it.

17. It's five years
This is a copy and pasted from my Im. My friend James is an expert on the subject. He's the one who got me in touch with yopa and pan.
I don't have a refrence web site he is looking it up for you.

dan Caithamer: how long does can in embryo be frozen before it's discarded
James: 5 years
dan caithamer: cool i am going to post it do you have a link
dan caithamer: it was a question on a web site.
James: after five years they are no longer viable, so as time goes by each set of blastocysts viability expires so that every day hundreds if not thousands are thrown in the trash
dan caithamer: cool do you have a link for that
James: no
James: i'll see if i can find a reference

I'll post a website for you as soon as he finds one. Thanks Danny.
