Poll question: Your favorite Republican screen character:
Edited on Thu Jul-27-06 09:44 PM by brentspeak
Reading today about Sen.Conrad Burns upbraiding a bunch of low-paid, courageous, and exhausted Virginia firemen for doing what he considered a "poor job" fighting Montana forest fires, I got to thinking about the many obnoxious and memorable Republican screen characters I've come across watching movies (and TV).

Doug Niedermeyer ("Animal House") who enjoyed making pledges say 'Thank you, sir. May I have another?':

Judge Elihu Smails ("Caddyshack"): "Well, the world needs ditchdiggers too!"

Ted Underhill ("Fletch"): "I suppose you're expecting a nice gratuity?.....maybe next time."

Bob Morton ("Robocop"): "Oh, f**k Jones. He fumbled the ball; I was there to pick it up."

Dick Jones ("Robocop"):"I had a guaranteed military sale with ED 209. Renovation program, spare parts for 25 years.Who CARES if it worked or not?"

Gordon Gecko ("Wall Street"): "Greed...is good."

Stan Grable ("Revenge Of The Nerds"):"Those nerds are a threat to our way of life."

Kreese ("The Karate Kid"):"We do not train to be merciful here, mercy is for the weak."

Mr.Burns ("The Simpsons"):Well, that's odd ... I've just robbed a man of his livelihood, and yet I feel strangely empty. Tell you what, Smithers - have him beaten to a pulp.

There has never been a better depiction of a Republican on the screen--nor a better description of Republicanism than when Stewart reads him the riot act.

17. Chairman of the Board, Arthur Jensen in the movie, "Network",
Edited on Thu Jul-27-06 10:51 PM by no_hypocrisy
an unhinged evangelical capitalist. The tirade he delivers to Howard Beale in the fantastic boardroom-scene actually manages to capture, in an exagerrated form, some element of the libertarian mindset:

"You have meddled with the primal forces of nature, Mr. Beale, and I won't have it, is that clear?! You think you have merely stopped a business deal - that is not the case! The Arabs have taken billions of dollars out of this country, and now they must put it back. It is ebb and flow, tidal gravity, it is ecological balance. You are an old man who thinks in terms of nations and peoples. There are no nations! There are no peoples! There are no Russians! There are no Arabs! There are no Third Worlds! There is no West! There is only one holistic system of systems, one vast and immense, interwoven, interacting, multi-variate, multi-national dominion of dollars!"

21. Absolutely! Archie Bunker went into millions of American homes every week
(on the "small screen") for 8 yrs and, often using humor to gentle the harsh lesson, showed us the absurdity of being a bigoted, narrow minded, ignorant RW "moran" and struck a raw nerve with some RWers (apparently Richard Nixon was not a fan. ).

Others listed were excellent examples however I think that the Archie character had a greater overall and long term positive impact on American society. B-)
