How can we overcome the controlled news media of America? |
|
If we can not then there is no hope.

"far left" nutjobs and the like. If your view isn't the view of the powerful, it's not worth hearing and inferior.

even if only a dozen people from every major city spend one weekend putting up posters that show the bald faced lies the media feeds us it could make a difference.
but it has to be done in increments. First you have to hit them personally - like gas prices, tuition, etc., for ex., and work up from there to tie it all in.

6. we really have to bury some fantasies... |

like having the media suddenly change in our favor, or hi-fiving a rare moment where someone who represents our thinking actually gets 3 minutes of good air and we all go crazy with false hope. I've seen it so often it's dang heartbreaking.

I'm beginning to get a little fatalistic about the world and everything in it I guess, but I really think the only way things are going to change is either with incredibly drastic measures or from the inside of the system.

5. you know, even with all of the negative press John Kerry and Al Gore |

got, in the latter case we won, and in the former we came very very close.
In terms of the congressional elections, the fact that the media is gleefully reporting on how crappy the Republicans are will only help us.
The media are never going to be the Left Wing's buddies but if we can get the Fairness Doctrine back into place when we take over the House and Senate...

7. internet, internet, internet |
|
the media is starting to take their cues from the internet. Notice how TMZ broke the story of the Mel Gibson comments, and then the MSM caught on.
Blogs are the future.

10. Have you written your reps & media in support of HR 550? |
|
The loosening of restrictions on ownership consolidation can and should be ROLLED BACK. HR 550 would do this.
Push your legislators to support HR 550, and push this topic with everyone you know.

12. The Russians learned a valuable ability Americans sorely lack |
|
The Russians learned to "read between the lines." They know what it is like to live under controlled news outlets under an authoritarian government, and they eventually developed the defense of skepticism in the integrity of the news outlets. Most ordinary Americans have no such skepticism at all; they are absolutely defenseless.

I have added anti-Fox News signs to the weekly anti-war protest because we must target this source of disinformation and right/reich wing propaganda. There are a few Limbaugh-insulting signs as well.

16. Create A Better Alternative Network |
|
Back in the 60's, there were Free Press papers in every major city and college campus, college radio station and small FM underground stations read "Earth News" and other alternative reports and there was a network of local and national advertisers that supported these mediums. Some even grew into "mainstream" operations.
The problem today is there are so many different means to communicate...and all have to be both coordinated and promoted. The right wing learned to create their own media world (parallel universe) that not only was cheap to produce and maintain, but in the long term was profitable. AAR shows this can happen in the progressive side and there are hundreds of voices...that are not being heard the way they should. My hope is someone can step into this void to bring all the elements of our growing and dynamic community together so it can be heard loudly and clearly.
Cheers...

17. #1 - Kill your fucking cable, people |
|
I can't believe how many people in this forum who complain about the shit they see in the media are all pretty much complaining about what they see on CABLE NEWS. Get rid of your cable, for crying out loud! Eventually, you WON'T miss it. I promise. I haven't had cable in 16 years!
#2 - Stop buying their "news"papers and magazines.
That's pretty much self-explanatory.
#3 - Get yourself a halfway decent worldband radio and listen to English-language news reports from around the world every day.
I listen to Radio Exterior de Espana and Deutsche Welle on an Eton E100 I bought at Circuit City for $100. It's amazing how the newscasts on these programs just tell you what's going on in the world WITHOUT the subtle (and not-so-subtle) editorial bullshit. It's almost shocking when you hear it for the first time. It's what our own newscasts used to be like in this country.
