Is the Mel Gibson flap a ruse ??? |
|
Edited on Mon Jul-31-06 08:53 PM by jaysunb
Yes, he probably did make the remarks, but, why the hell is this such a huge NATIONAL news story ? And how is it that it's picked up by some obscure web site almost immediately and reported relentlessly within hours of the incident.
Were his comments untrue or overblown? And isn't this the way most people around the world think ? Is this media frenzy designed to reinforce our "Israel right or wrong" policy and/or distract from the atrocities being committed by their government.
I don't know Mel Gibson or his personal opinions on ANYTHING, but I do know that the drunken rants of a movie actor don't deserve the attention it's getting.
What a gift to AIPAC & Likud
Flame away !
on edit, I forgot to add this :tinfoilhat:

Gotta be. The US media would never focus on a trivial celebrity story like that. I mean, this isn't like when Star Jones went on Larry King or anything. That was an important story.

in the world think - then most of the people in the world are petty little narrow-minded racists.
Mel Gibson - "The Jews are responsible for all the wars in the world,"
That's a lie and it's a lie that has been told for hundreds of years as a justification to attack Jewish people.
There is a difference between attacking a country's policies and attacking a people based on their ethnicity. Mel attacked a people for their ethnicity, using an age-old racist lie to do it with.

With all due respect for you, I must strongly disagree.
Unfortunately, most of the conflicts that are on the worlds radar have direct links to Israel. Iraq, Afgahnastan, Lebanon, Palastine, as well as looming war w/ Iran are all in one way or another linked to Israel....rightly or wrongly.

41. Not true. We've exported that hatred. |
|
When I lived in Mexico I was horrified by the bigotry against Blacks. And it's not like the world treats Africa as if it were full of equal world citizens.
And I am keeping to the subject at hand. It sounds like you're apologizing for the bigotry against one ethnicity. I'm just wondering what other bigotries are acceptible because they are widespread. Turks are really unpopular in Europe. The Kurds have their detractors. I just don't understand why widespread antisemitism lets Mel Gibson off the hook?

Neither you or I know what was said.
I live around people from every place on earth, and yes many if not most see Israel as the source or root cause of most problems as to war and terror today. Whether that's valid or not, it is still the perception.

and I quote: "I don't know what Mel said. I heard what was attributed to him, and stated that those feelings are pretty widespread around here ( So Cal. ) and throughout the world."
This means you know what was attributed to him..."Jews are responsible for all the wars." To which you further asserted that those feelings were widespread in your area, and, in fact, the world! YOU are the one that switched back to "Israelis" from "Jews." I have yet to see one report that Mel said anything about Israelis or even the ME in particular.
So, to be very clear, you are now saying that you don't hear people blaming Jews, but rather blaming Israel for all the wars? To me, that is just slightly more comforting, but still alarming.

A drunk guy mouths off because he is troubled by what is going on in the Middle East. Remember the Arabs are Semites, too. Gibson loved "F911" and is one of the more open-minded, nicer people in motion pictures.

28. Mel is an anti-semite and his drunkeness outed it/him. |
|
His father is a Holocaust denier. Mel was asked POINT BLANK if he believed as his father does and Mel did a very fine dance around the question. The media spin on it was, "Mel doesn't want to disagree with his father in PUBLIC." BULLSHIT. Mel just didn't want anyone to know he TOO is an anti-semite. His alcohol problem exposed him.
I hope he's finished in Hollywood. He still has a GAZZILION bucks to make his own films though. If he's boycotted...perhaps he'll go away and spread his hate elsewhere. Doesn't his family live in Europe somewhere?

You're entitled to feel that way but it's not very chivalrous to hide behind your prejudice by attributing it to others.
I just put my Filipina girlfriend who is Catholic on a plane back to LA and she was mortified by those comments.
If the comments are "widespread... around the world" she wasn't exposed to them in the Phillipines.
