Anyone hoping Castro turns out OK? |
|
I am.
It's mostly not b/c I'm a big admirer of his, but I'd like to see him outlive the * administration. I think him living through this will be a (hugh1!) F. U. to the neo-cons and fascist South Florida Cubans.
Viva Fidel! Pull through, get well, and prosper for at least the next 2.5 years!

2. I have great respect for Fidel... |

...and wish him a speedy recovery. Still, he's 80 or thereabouts.

3. I've always been worried that if Castro dies, the US will invade |
|
I'm pretty sure of this, if there is any chaos whatsoever in the transition -- eg spontaneous democracy demonstrations that are suppressed would be an almost irresistable pretext for invasion, given right wing and Miami political pressures.
We cannot afford three simultaneous wars. For that reason alone, I hope Castro pulls through.

5. I'm not sure our military would invade. |
|
I think Halliburton and Wal-Mart, etc. would be the ones to invade.

27. There's no difference anymore really |
|
between the army, navy, halliburton and wal-mart.
They all work to spread the power of global multinational corporations.

4. Meh, I can't say I care one way or the other... |
|
Castro's mellowed a bit with age, but he was damned bloodthirsty during the revolution, and the country still has terrible problems with poverty. I realize the former regime was hardly any better, but in the end, there's just not much difference between a right-wing tyrant and a left-wing tyrant -- it's still tyranny.
But the main point is that, even if Fidel dies, control will pass to Raul and little will change. We won't see change in Cuba until there's a power struggle over leadership. And with every key government leader backing Raul as successor, we won't see that now.

7. He's outlived the Eisenhower, Kennedy, Johnson, Nixon, Ford, Carter, |
|
Reagan, Bush 1 and Clinton administrations - he's an old man and can't go on for ever. At his age he should be putting his feet up. 50 years of the same ruler can't be good for any country.

I have no love for his heavy handed repression, but I wish this country could benefit from the type of educational and health care programs he's started in his.
In any case, I don't want him making the fortunate son any more fortunate.

10. Dictators don't rise in a vacuum. |
|
They come to power for a reason - usually to make the place livable and keep infighting under control. Hopefully for Cuba's sake Fidel has outlived his usefulness and when he does go meet his maker Cuba will be able to get along without yet another dictator.

21. The * Cabal wants to bring freedom & democracy to Cuba. |
|
But unfortunately, it would probably be the same kind of freedom & democracy Iraq is experiencing.
The people of Cuba don't deserve that.

22. I give credit to Castro for saving Cuba from the clutches of the US |
|
if the US sugar barons and the Mafia had won, Cuba would be a toxic dump like america is, with a corrupt govt. and an island raped of its resources.
may he get well soon.

As a leader he could have done more for his country. I see our dear Christians in Little Cuba are sending off fire works that some one may die soon just a JC always wanted.

26. I support Castro and anyone else who opposes the new empire. |
|
I think, though, that when he recovers, he should resign his formal positions and transfer power to a new generation (not his brother). This is key to ensure a smooth transition. He should take a cue from Deng Xiaoping in China.
