Anyone wonder about the timing of the World Trade Center movie? |
|
Anyone here wonder about the timing of the World Trade Center movie this week?
A couple of months before the mid term elections, could it be designed to excite the country? Remember 9/11 and all the hype? They need something and could they be timing this to help in November?
Just wondering if I am the only one who is suspect of the timing of this movie.

Who, by his own account, is a liberal. So I'm pretty sure he wouldn't stump for Shrub at all doing this.

Not Bush, and not the attack itself. It's supposed to be very non-political.

|
It almost seems like a fell good movie. A "triumph of the human spitit" kind of thing. Strange for oliver Stone.....Wonder if he got a little $$$ on the side. I'll wait until I hear more about the movie, but the timing is very good for the Right wing, and having a "Liberal" do the film might just be a smoke screen. I hope not.

If Baltimore is hit by anything from a hurricane to a terrorist attack, I am going to make signs. One that will read, this is Baltimore, 60 miles North of the White House and in big block letters, help, we need help, we have been hit by a ____________. That way somebody on George's staff that can read will have a clue.

And with or without this movie, they're going to pull out all the stops to remind everyone how their single biggest failure is their single biggest triumph. If that makes little sense, it fits right into the kind of country this has become.

That being said, I believe this film and "Flight 93" being released this soon after the events are in bad taste.
Of course, so is all of Bush's Presidency.

and long before taste and compassion for the survivors would seem to require to heal, it is being marketed by the same outfit that marketed Gibson's snuff film, marketed heavily to fundy churches.
Get it yet?
It's a two hour campaign commercial, geared to scaring the hell out of churchgoers in the heartland so they'll get to the polls and vote for the party of the man who let it happen.

your town hired a pest control officer (who played the flute)...supposedly, he was gonna get ridda all the rats with his flute, but when he played it, it was the kids, not the rats, that followed him. he ate them all. then he came back -YOUR TOWN HIRED HIM AGAIN! to get ridda the rats....and again, he played his flute, but only the town's kids followed the pied piper (albert fish was his name)..... meanwhile, the rats are still robbing cradles and popping outta toilets at night for a nice meal of sleeping human toes.... some would suggest the town's loss of its kids is actually a good thing re the gene pool (?)

12. Not that they wouldn't wave the bloody flag every chance they get |
|
But, I don't think Oliver Stone would do it for them. I thought it was a human story about two guys trapped in the wreckage. Actually, if it's what they say, it's a story that should be told, the one about people who actually suffered in this - rather than all the flag waving, nuke 'em all nonsense that we get every time we hear about it. I doubt it will bode as well for the thugs as they think - I could be wrong, though, it's happened before.

how anyone can feel good about 9-11 is more than I would know. I remember Joseph Conrad criticized romanticism of the Titanic sinking. He called it music to get drowned by.

21. Yikes - "feel good movie" is a way too creepy descriptor to use |
|
It's a huge tragedy no matter how you look at it. But, the human story does seem to be forgotten. The widows get brow beaten by Coultergeist and basically no one calls her on it - the survivors and volunteers get treated to the back of the hand now that they're sick with lung disease (thanks EPA) - and the people who were killed are being used as an excuse to run around the world and kill more people (people who had nothing to do with the original killing), I doubt they'd appreciate that. At least it's supposed to be about survivors and their personal courage that day.

It's like Bush and the GOP have fed off the energy and bravery of that day for years; but would George Bush spend an extra 10 seconds to save somebody's life, we saw the answer to that in Katrina.

I feel that the country has had a rough five years and the extreme partisanship of the Bush administration and the Republican Congress has only hindered our healing as a nation. I hope that things improve and America starts going back to One nation, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.

17. I think Stone's going to make TWO 9/11 movies and this is the first.... |
|
...one of them. This is just my conjecture, mind you. I think this is something in the way of insurance for him because the second one is going to address the questions that we all have, that everyone has to some extent, but which would not be taken as seriously as if he hadn't produced a piece like this.
Just a thought.

22. I've seen the movie already |
|
I was lucky enough to get a free sneak preview ticket. There really isn't anything in the movie about the political aspect of 9-11. The closest that it gets to politics is that there is a brief clip of little George Bush speaking from the first bunker that he flew to. He looks small and scared, just as he did on 9-11. Isn't it amazing that the footage of Bush's first stop in the bunker is hardly ever shown?
The only thing that I can see that might be relevant is that the movie stirs up the emotions from that day. It is indeed about a group of Port Authority police officers who went into the building that day. They were trapped below when the buildings fell. Two survived, and it is their story that is the plot of the movie. There could be some controversy about a couple of things. One is that you hear constant loud thuds after the building is hit. It is the sound of bodies smashing into the sidewalk after they jump out of the building. Another is the astounding lack of information which was available to the police officers as they ride to the Twin Towers. They are shown discussing the reported news reports of the second tower being hit, but the only information that they have is second-hand information from the few phone calls from family members which managed to get through. The officers don't know whether that information is reliable. They go into the building with no verifiable information that the second tower was hit, despite the fact that everyone in the country saw the second plane hit on TV.

to all of the NY Emergency Services tapes of that morning (several channels, several hours total time) You forget how isolated the dispatchers are; anyone with a TV on knew more about what was happening. Many of the police, EMS, and firefighters on the scene were equally isolated from outside information and frequently very excited in trying to communicate with dispatch, both to describe their situation, and trying to find out what was happening. They did the best they could under the extreme circumstances.

somebody somewhere is going to talk, look at the Roosevelts, look at what people know about their most personal secrets, its all out there, the same way with Lyndon Johnson and JFK. I know that 9-11 will come out, not as soon as we would have liked but it will. But that will not change the bravery, the sacrifice and the kindness of what people did that day. If I had been president that day, I would have been so humbled by the spirit of the American people that I would have put them first always for the rest of my appointment; but that's just me, maybe I am too naive.
