It all depends on how big Lamont wins. I think he will win regardless if he wins tonight. There's no way in hell Dems in CT will allow a Repug to win. I think the Dems will unite on whoever the candidate is. I think they will be turned off that LIEberman has turned against the party. He will come off as a self-promoting oppportunist.

2. Last poll with that possiblity was 40(L)/40(L)/12(Repub) |
|
The last poll with those three was a 40/40/12 split, with the repub getting 12%. So, probably not.

But it's hilarious to hear you pretend so.
By the way, wonder how Lamont is going to do wooing back the 48% of his state's Democrats (mostly working class and poor) who were called "traitors" for supporting Lieberman? I'm sure the racist caricature will be a big help there.

"If Lieberman wins in November it will be because of republican votes" In a state where Republicans outnumber Democrats and moderate independents outnumber both. Good job, there. I expect as the summer turns to autumn and the leaves turn to red and gold, a whole raft of threads from the far left explaining how everybody else screwed up what had been the Democratic party's safest seat.

49. Please define your terms |
|
Specifically, how does party loyalty apply to somebody who regularly goes on television to attack his own party?
How does party loyalty apply to somebody who says that if he loses his party's primary election, he'll run as an independent?
And how does party loyalty apply to somebody whose constituent outreach has sucked for many years?
Yeah, there was some scorched earth in Connecticut, but I don't think it's where you think it is.

Several months ago, the Republicans' only Senate challenger (a barber from some dink town) had dropped out of his race, and the state's Democrats were trying to unseat the GOP governor. Then the far left got involved and managed to turn the Democrats' safest seat into a seat the Republicans have a good chance of picking up under several not so far fetched scenarios: --Lieberman turns independent, Schlesinger stays in the race, and Joe gets elected by a coalition of disaffected Democrats, independents and Republicans --Lieberman turns Republican, Schlesinger drops out of the race, and Joe gets elected by a coalition of disaffected Democrats, independents and Republicans --Lieberman drops out of the race, Schlesinger drops out of the race, the popular GOP governor names a successor (perhaps Lowell Weicker) and the successor gets elected by a coalition of disaffected Democrats, independents and Republicans --Lieberman drops out of the race, Schlesinger stays in the race, and Schlesinger gets elected by a coalition of disaffected Demcorats, independents and Republicans riding the governor's coattails.
The alternative is that the Unknown Millionaire somehow manages to win back the 48% of Democrats he and his followers have been calling traitors, etc., and picks up enough independents to win. But Connecticut voters have historically never responded well to extremism, and Lamont has got his primary victory by appealing to the crazies. Look around this board at his whoopsters. Think they can do it?

Most of the Democrats who voted for Lieberman in the primary will vote in November for the Party's nominee. People who are committed enough to the Party to show up for its primaries are by and large a loyal lot, who close ranks after such an intramural contest. Indeed, Lieberman's announcement he would break eanks with the Party for an independent run if he lost the primary probably cast him Mr. Lamont's margin of victory. It seems unlikely to me that any number of voters feel themselves stigmatized as traitors and the like for voting as they did in the primary. Mr. Lamont has certainly not called those who voted for his opponent any such thing, and very few people are directly impacted by the excesses of comment on the internet.
Independent voters are a pretty fickle bunch. They generally imagine themselves carefully making rational assessments of candidates "on the issues", but this is mere ordinary human self-deception: the fact is that they have little in the way of political ballast and are the element of the population most swayed by emotional factors. Above all they flock to perceived winners, and shun perceived losers. Lieberman's leading asset with independents was the aura of inevitable victory, and he has lost that irrevocably. Further, he has revealed a very low character trait and raised it to prominence, namely self-interestedness carried to the point of petulance. It is a repellent spectacle on an emotional level: people do not like it, and do not willingly identify themselves with a person who displays it.
The general mood of the people in the country, Sir, is "throw the bums out!" It is, overall, a dangerous time to be an incumbent, and ro be identified with the present regime in Washington. Mr. Lamont is well suited and positioned to capitalize on this mood. His position on the war in Iraq is the general position of the people of the country. Neither his manner nor his expression is extremist, nor is his background.

In a way I want to see Joe run as an independant just to see him betray his senate supporters in the primaries. It'd be great to see Schumer and others squirming to distance themselves from a man running as a SPOILER!
And they should know, if they ever want broad support from Dem constituents, they should use better judgement next time in not supporting such a repuke ass kisser.
