All JonBenet, All The Time
In the news this morning we have yet another bloodbath in Iraq, as gunmen shoot up a Shiite religious procession in Baghdad, killing at least 16 people and injuring 230. More American troops have been killed in Afghanistan by Taliban insurgents -- guess we didn’t really get rid of the Taliban before George W. Bush's Iraq disaster was started -- and there's renewed trouble in the tenuous Middle East cease-fire.

And what's the top story on all the cable news channels this Sunday morning?

The JonBenet Ramsey case and the gripping fact that newly-discovered suspect John Mark Karr is on a plane and coming back to the United States.

Are you kidding me? Really. Are you freaking kidding me?

Don't get me wrong: I'm the father of a nine-year-old boy and I can appreciate the horror of any child being murdered. But this case is one child, it's over a decade old and, at this point, there are serious questions over whether Karr will even turn out to be a viable suspect in the killings.

This may be an important regional story in Colorado, where the killing occurred and, perhaps, the seventh or eighth story told to a national audience. But considering everything else of real importance, that truly affects the stability of our planet and real peoples' lives, this is nowhere near the top story on our national news.

Adding to what will continue to be an ongoing media obsession with this case -- in which our single-threaded Corporate Media finds this to be the only story they can cover -- is the fact that it's now been revealed that Karr was a patient at a Bangkok clinic that specializes in… sex-change operations! And it looks like Karr went there for treatments.

Oh, boy. The only way this gets knocked out of the news now is if some winsome blonde chick goes missing in the Caribbean.

So here's a chicken-and-egg question: Have the American people become so dumbed-down because this is the kind of non-story that the Corporate Media beats into the ground for hours on end and for days at a time? Or does the media do it because we have become so vacant and disinterested in real news that this kind of stuff is all we really care about?

There's a lot of speculation going on about whether Karr's story even makes sense and a friend of mine who is both a lawyer and a writer said he would not report more than a one-liner about this until DNA evidence or other indisputable proof verifies that Karr caused this little girl's death.

For the sake of our national awareness and intellect, I hope DNA testing is done quickly and whoever should be caring so intensely gets to the bottom of this case. Even if Karr does turn out to be the killer, this is not the top story in the world right now. It's not even close.

And what if it's discovered that he's just an attention-seeking nutcase that had nothing to do with it?

At this point, the media has pushed this as the story we should all care about to the exclusion of all others. They've made the decision that a suspect in a 10-year-old murder case and the fact that he is getting on an airplane is more important than the incendiary situation in the Middle East, a civil war in Iraq that's killing an average of 100 people a day and the way our own involvement in that quagmire drags our country further into the toilet every day. And even if they did focus on those real stories, they should still find time to talk about 46 million Americans with no health insurance and a looming oil crisis that will have a severe impact on people as winter approaches. That's what journalists are supposed to do for a living.

But in defiance of all of that, we are now assaulted with all JonBenet, all the time.

In their warped news judgment, the media is deciding for all of us that we should be more concerned about the minute-by-minute developments with John Mark Karr than the fact that our brave men and women continue to be lost in Iraq and Afghanistan. They are making a decision every hour that a story of such incredibly specious importance, is more relevant than the deaths of our men and women serving in uniform overseas.

And, for that alone, they should be profoundly ashamed.

16. As my heart gently weeps !
Edited on Sun Aug-20-06 10:35 AM by NicRic
Just as Gorge Harrison's guitar gently weeped ,so does my
heart ! Yes of course for Jon Benet, however also for any
inocent child who's life is cut short ! This does not take my
eyes off the bigger picture of the things within our control .
Iam talking about our illegally occupying another country
which we invaded however B/4 the invasion we shocked and awed
them by killing thousands of their inocent people ,who's main
concern was earning a honest day pay or just enough to put
food on their table ,something just one of those bombs would
have done for many ,many of these distressed families .Instead
we ,or should I say our poor excuse of a human being our
current puppet in power bush decided killing was much more
easier .Plus all of those contributors to his bid for
President ,the large ones ,the lobbiest who work for the
multi-nationial companies in which war for profit is big bucks
.They get to supply all the bombs weapons ,bullets etc.etc.
Then after we have destroyed most of the contries
infrastucture ,they get the no bid contract to rebuild it. Of
course we all know what company this is becasue we have a V.P.
who use to work for them ! The are such a nice company they
gave him a early retirement bonus ,imagine getting a bonus of
millions of $ for something everyone else gets punished for ?
To make matters worst we have a news media that has been
bought off by this corruption on a scale never seen B/4 in our
history ! Also sadly enough long after Mr.bush is out of
office our country and the world will be paying for the greed
and distruction and death caused by his eight years of mass
murder ! Thru it all my heart gently weeps ,the needless death
of young American Men and Women , the needless deaths of
inocent Iraqies, both young and old and inbetween ! To top all
of this maddness off ,it appearsthat Mr. bushes actions have
not done anything positive ,and only made this world a much
,much more dangerous world to live in. The high court ,that
did a favor to bushes father owes the American people and the
world a apoligy that will be to little to late ,however still
better then nothing at all.
                                                       Take
Care,

Sincerely NicRic

3. There is no more 'news media'. It's infotainment wrapped in newspaper.
It's ALL about ratings and the 'news' providers have determined that the American people would rather read the National Enquirer than the New York Times.

6. It was going further than that on most networks...
I was watching MSNBC yesterday and they started parading on everyone from so-called "experts" to parents of slain kids talking about how we need to make new laws to protect the children. And that this is some kind of national emergency that needs to get done immediately.

And some of the things they are talking about is worse than Bush's domestic spying programs.

It's the state of fear...

10. Granted, the coverage of the JonBenet Ramsey murder is
tiresome now; but wait until Katie Couric comes onboard CBS NEWS. She will give us her perky little perspective on the developing story which will draw everything into focus.

I'm so excited, I've leaving my television tuned into CBS 24/7, just waiting for her to come on.

Is BushAmerica great, or is it GREAT!

14. I feel it necessary to warn you
watching excessive perkiness can cause one to poke their eyes out with ice picks, stick their head in a gas oven or cover oneself in honey and antagonize the local bees nest. I beg of you "for the love of God, turn your tv off and slowly walk away". The dark side is safer than all that nauseating perkiness. What if it rubs off on you? Think about that why don't you!

17. I honestly don't know what anyone watches that b.s. anymore.
I haven't watched cable news for a few years since we got rid of our overpriced cable service. Since then, I learned what the hell was REALLY going on in this country via the internet. I wouldn't watch any of that drivel if you paid me, and I don't understand why informed DUers watch it either. Especially considering it's all a pack of lies designed to dumb down and brainwash America! If people around here want to fight them at their own game-turn the damned t.v. off! Boycott their asses! They'll get the message soon enough if enough people do the same. The ONLY thing they understand or care about is money. :grr:

Anyone relying on it alone for news is going to be misinformed.

People need to be aware of other sources so they can get a better perspective.

23. Well, we know that 1 in a thousand missing girls does not affect
us at all, and we aren't as distracted by silly tabloid stories.

Stupid people let the TV tell them what is important.

Stupid people follow this case as if it matters to anyone that wasn't close to the family.

27. Were you born yesterday?
I don't understand why people are so shocked about the MSM's priorities. They report the juicy stories that people want to hear about so they get higher ratings and more advertising dollars. It's been that way my whole life and I am almost 40. If it pertains to sex, booze, drugs, rapes, kidnappings, murders - it becomes entertainment for the masses, reality TV. If pretty people are involved, it's that much better. If rich, famous people are involved, even better!

I see so many threads complaining about this as if it's the first time you have ever noticed it. Have you been in a coma for 40 years?
