Poll question: Hypothetical Question |
|
You are approached by a shadowy individual (or group) it/they have a very "evil" motif to them. (dressed in black, skull designs and other "evil" designs on their clothes/jewelry/etc.)
Now, here is the question:
This group offers you power. Or money. Or both. They offer you arcane abilities the likes of which mortals do not possess. All you have to do is one little thing for them.....
What they want you to do is basically the one thing you would never do (or one of the things) like: sacrifice an innocent, betray a friend/spouse, hurt a lot of people, etc.
There is no catch per se, if you do the one little thing they ask, they will grant you whatever it is that you would want. If you want to bring the dead back to life, you can. If you want unlimited wealth, you have it. If you want to be able to shoot fireballs from your eyes and lightning bolts from your arse, you can.
As a qualifier, let say that they will give you a demonstration/"test-drive" (as it were) to whatever it takes to show you it is on the level.
The trade then, is anything you want for something you never want to do.
Would you do it?

No. I am just curious. Inspired by a Lovecraft story or two.

I mean I understand the faustian part of your question, but I don't see what it has to do with those stories.

it was just "inspired by".
In Shadow over Innsmouth the people of Innsmouth make a bargain with the Deep Ones and Dagon.
In Dreams, the main character isn't really going along with Nyarlahotep, the witch and her familiar, but a lesser man would have I think gone through with the rituals.....

11. This reminds me of a Twilight Zone episode |
|
In that episode, a dark shadowy figure arrives at a struggling young couple's house and shows them a glass box with a red button inside. He tells them that all they have to do is push the button, and they'll have a big suitcase of money, which he shows them as well. They ask what will happen if they push the button, and the man says, "Someone, somewhere, who you do not know will die." The man leaves the box and says he'll be back in 24 hours.
They spend the next 24 hours fretting and pacing, almost pushing it, then holding back, but thinking about all that money.
Finally, they push the button. The man reappears, and collects the glass box, and gives them the money. They ask him what will happen to the box now, and the man replies that he will be offering it to "someone, somewhere, who you do not know."
(I might have botched some of the minor details, but you get the picture!)

13. Probably not. But there's a wide swath of shit I probably would *never* do |
|
Like, I would never sit in a room for 24 hours listening to Celine Dion. But if the incentive was right, I could be persuaded.
But if you're talking about doing something intrinsically, morally contrary to who I am as a person? No. Sorry. No sale.

Instantly kill some innocent people, get power, bring them back to life, give them a million dollars for the "inconvenience", then make all neocons join the armed forces?? Heck ya! where's the down-side? :dilemma:

15. If I receive the power to undo the harm I did, and make it even better... |

... than it was initially, then it seems like a complete Duh to me.
EDIT: By undo & make it better, I mean something like "make it as though the bad thing I did was never done, and something awesome was done in its place". What a duh of a question.
