MEMORANDUM FROM THE BUNKER
Thoughts on Death and Life and Where to Get a Really Good Sandwich
My wife is headed to the hospital. She thinks her daddy might die tonight. I sit at the keyboard listening to Exile on Main Street, separating myself from the drama. Turn it up. I control this environment.
My wife is headed to the hospital tonight. Hauling ass down a straight line American interstate highway towards a suburban nightmare development of tremendous dreams unfulfilled. It’s a place we never go; bad karma. It’s a place they have a hospital stuck between Starbucks and Home Depot.
What a shitty place to cash out. I can’t help but think that they should drive him out to a beach, crank up his favorite music, set a fire, and let it go. I don’t want to think about what they’ll be doing instead.
So, I sit here waiting for the news of the impending death of someone who played a part in my life.; wondering if this will take a while or what. Since the hurricane, you really can’t get a decent sandwich delivered anymore.
What does it feel like to die?

1. I was wondering that too |
|
the other day when one of our local tree trimmers ran himself through the 16 inch wood chipper accidentally. Zip and he was gone in about fifteen seconds, the other guys around him couldn't get the machine to shut off, apparently he had bypassed the safety switch. Messy. Messy.

2. Dying isn't all that bad.. it's the getting to that point that sucks. |
|
It has actually happened to me on three different occasions.
God speed and bless your father-in-law.

3. When nurses call you to come in, it's generally a matter of hours |
|
so the news may come in by the time I hit "send."
When I was called about my pop, it took three hours and fifteen minutes.
As for what it feels like, I've been close once. Everything just sort of falls away: possessions, worries, work, needs, pain. To call it "peace" seems somehow inadequate.
As a nurse, I've seen a lot of death. I've seen more patients turn down pain medication at the end than ask for it. Whatever else goes on, pain seems to become irrelevant at the end.
My thoughts are with your wife. It's hard to lose a parent, I just did.

4. Good thoughts about the beach. Sorry to hear about your loss. |
|
I'll just sit here quietly with you awhile.

I've come across an esoteric and healing method to contact those who are near death or who have recently passed away. Let me know if you'd like me pass it along to you.

Katrina. A war some time ago.
Still, it intrigues me.
What must it be like?
Is it too late to say you're sorry?
