Poll question: Do you intentionally promote the enemy? |
|
Of course, most people will answer "no" to this question. Yet, we seldom go more than a few days without some fascist pundit getting half of the first page of General Discussion's posts and dominating for another week. Now, I know most people who post here are smart enough to recognize that brand names and logos on clothing serve as a form of advertising for the clothing company (that the consumer pays for to provide for free), but there's a chance that some haven't realized that the same goes for posts here at DU, especially in General Discussion.
In advertising, there is no bad way to promote a brand as long as it bores itself into the minds of consumers. Thus, no matter how bad the things are you say about O'Hannicoulter or a mass media station, you are still promoting them by strengthening the memory of their brand in the minds of consumers. The only way to hurt one of these is to allow them to fade into obscurity by refusing to promote them or even acknowledge them (or, better yet, to promote a competing alternative).
So, with this in mind, do you intentionally promote those people and companies ("brands") which you oppose?

3. There are lots of secret freepers here, according to some. |
|
Some claim I'm one, too. I'm sure that's the reason enemy brands are promoted here so frequently.

|
So Im sure your a true blue duer.
You see we secret freepers know that if you would just stop paying attention to Ann Coulter and Rush Limbaugh they would dissappear. Their influence would melt away like sugar in water. That's why we bring them up as much as possible.

7. I was the guy in black. |

Smartassness aside, I'm not suggesting we ignore them to make them disappear, I'm suggesting that posting a thousand "Can you believe what (fill in the pundit) said/did?!" posts in the same place viewed by tens of thousands can be counter-productive when maybe a hundred would do.

8. I would agree with that |
|
But the problem isn't limited to pundits- take the rapture threads - did we really need 15-20 posts all making essentially the same joke?
I don't know how you solve this problem though.

I'm not a fan of censorship, and I wouldn't want to see a rule that prevents the promotion of "good" brands. So, I'm at a point where I just complain creatively about it.

6. Good, we need to, and we need to promote alternatives. |

Which, I think, many people here do. I was speaking more to promoting media brands, though branding is now political.

Every post kicks a thread to the top of the stack. This can be both good and bad. People should be aware of it.

14. Good observation/question... |
|
...I believe the Ann Coulters, Bill O'Reillys, and even the Howard Sterns of the world are heavily dependent on the free publicity/promotion unwittingly provided by their detractors, and further, that they could not survive without it.

15. Most heavy metal bands count on this phenomenon. |
|
I like metal. I've listened to a lot of it. The truth is that many metal musicians are just not very good. If it weren't for the fact that they piss off parents and "concerned" organizations, most metal bands would never have cut an album. The same goes for rap. Would 2 Live Crew have ever gone further than South Florida if it weren't for the PMRC trying to censor them? Probably not.

I am amazed at some of the coverage some editorialists/radio folks/etc on the right get around here. Obviously, the kinds of things these folks say and do deserve attention, but at some point it just becomes tedious.
I don't listen to Rush nor care to discuss him all that much because getting the left to freak out over what he says is part of his schtick. To a certain extent, it plays right into his hands. At a certain point, you have to pick your battles.
