Boycott all U want, call whoever U want it does'nt..... |
|
matter. Don't you get it? The people your calling and Boycotting already realize that people with our views exist. They are going to air this shit anyway because they are hoping to get to all the people who get all their information from television, you know them, the people who keep it tuned to fox news because its the best news channel. You are appealing to the enemy. Its like asking a bear who has beaten you down with his claws and is sitting on you not to eat you. For these people the stakes are clear....keep their benefactors in power so they can get favorable legislation so they can amass more wealth at all cost, even rewriting history and destroying democracy....history and democracy are as much the enemy of GREED as those of us on here that oppose them. I agree that we have to fight back but this will not work...so think of something that will, look to history for an answer.

2. Wrong!!! Call, email, protest...don't let them do it! |
|
The ABC executives who authorized this are the enemy and so is Scholastic, so what. Does that mean we retreat? No way. We need to make it extremely uncomfortable for them, no let up.

Those are democratic solutions to a fascist problem. To quote Harvey Keitel from said movie, When asked, How do you fight a law and orderly war against terrorism ( replace terrorism with "a war against democracy") He said "you don't"

about the people I know who watch Fox and nothing else because they say it the best news channel, most of them like it I think because it is the most entertaining news channel to them, of course they also like raslin(Wrestling), and Nascar, ulitimate fighting, and Jackass.

Ratings matter ans the sponsor's $$$$ matter. Thats all that matters. If a couple of million less people watch Lost or Monday night Football, it will matter. It just actually has to be done.

6. I understand completely what you are saying, and..... |
|
to a certain extent, I agree. I liken it to the conservatives boycotting France and French products - as if they were buying French products in the first place! However....
The ONLY power we have left is boycotts/buycotts. And it is the one thing that will get their attention, because after all this is all about money, right? But it has to be full-scale, all-out. As many of us as possible must not watch MNF, must not support the sponsors, must not buy Disney products, must not go to Disneyworld or Disneyland.

7. what I am trying to say is... |
|
that the number of votes that they are likely to gain in the upcoming elections by portraying democrats as idiots and cowards and themselves as the inventors of toughness and common sense will lead to more years of favorable legislation that will in turn lead to amassing way, way more wealth than a boycott by people with good common sense like us ( I am convinced that we are the minority with the smallest number in the country} would ever deprive them of to begin with... so it is a useless tactic... I will not watch them or buy their products cause it makes me feel better, but I am not kidding myself that it will in any way hurt them more than the airing of this shit will help them.

But, this is different. This is about wallets that they can't control.

if for no other reason than what you said, it makes you feel better. You asked us to look to history for answers - well, there is the Montgomery Bus Boycott, for one. Of course, what we are talking about would have to be on a much larger scale, but what are the alternatives???

|
It means a hell of a lot to me. I will boycott Disney for this, on PRINCIPLE, because it is the RIGHT THING TO DO, in my little corner of the world.
They are not going to get one crying ass dime from me. It is a matter of principle...as old as I am, it may be for the rest of my life.
It's looking alot like a Disney-less Christmas here folks.

it is a battle to fight. Any way you can. As an individual, there is precious little in my power to effect change. The most far out extreme measure one could think of, would not make a dent in any life other than my own. Conscious actions I take with my dollars, my remote, and all that I allow into my little reality is the way of exercising what power I do have. It is...fighting back...in the truest sense .

I do the same thing. The people who are in power now are there for keeps, they own the means to stay there and this movie, the swiftboat attacks, the refusal to show Farenheit 9/11 on the public airwaves, the way both the last elections were stolen and the medias complicity in it are all examples of the fact that these people are not going anywhere and nothing is going to change until somebody forces them out.

16. Yet another way to look at it.... |
|
We are always being told that our vote counts, our one little vote, and if we don't vote we are betraying our democracy. How would boycotting be any different? When we buy a CD of our favorite musician/musical group, in a sense we are voting for them, if for no other reason than they will continue to make music for us to enjoy.

If you don't believe me, ask t5he Southern Baptists who tried to boycott Disney over their "Gay Day" employee benefits.
Flopped right on its face, and Disney lost nary a perceptible penny.

How many times in history did it seem like a particular event was "insignificant" at the time it occurred?
This is clearly an immensely wrong thing that ABC is doing. Not fighting this would encourage them to try something even more crazy.

To tell Dems they shouldn't balance the effort from our side isn't good advice.

32. controversy/publicity alone will make up for boycott |
|
Edited on Sat Sep-09-06 09:45 PM by karnac
Let's face it, the stink alone will boost ratings for abc astronomically. abc's rating have nowhere to go but up. There is always a market for anything. the suckers just have to be reminded about it. Call it market-based rubbernecking if you will.
think about it. think of *ONE* book/movie ,whicht didn't get pulled, that didn't do spectacularly because of the massive bad publicity.
what SHOULD have been done and still, to a certain extent, is pressuring/boycotting the *sponsors* that pay for it. That's the difference. the corporate sponsors of the "reagan" movie put the pressure themselves and the movie was pulled.
