Jury Duty......How many DU'ers have SERVED in the last two years? |
|
I'm not asking for those who have been called, but who have actually SERVED?

I was only called once in my entire life and that was 13 years ago. The prosecutor used a preemptory challenge to get rid of me so I didn't serve then.

My views are probably too wacky for either side to pick me.

Summer 2004 for three days. Currently have another summons for next month, but have gently reminded them that I'm supposed to be ineligible for two years since the last time.

But I have not been called. Moved to a place with less need to call folks up.

13. Why would you hope that 'they let me out of this one' |
|
.....perhaps 'they' believe that you 'judge fairly'....quite a compliment i would think.

Yes, I've served on several juries.

9. Been registered voter for 42 years, called in one time...in Tampa |
|
Sat in a hot overcrowded room for 4 hours and never got picked. I can't remember if they paid me anything...if they did it was probably enough for a 6 pack.

I was over forty the first time I was called and my employer convinced them that his company would fall apart if I had to do so. (At that time I was the only person who knew how to do his computerized payrolls.)I really wanted to go too. I wanted the work break.
After that I was excused because I was the primary caregiver of my husband. Finally, I was called again after he died and I was excused. I was sort of looking forward to the break, of doing something different, since I'm retired anyway. I haven't been called since then.

I got called and I got picked to serve, but that was slightly more than two years ago (2 years and 3 months ago, IIRC).

12. I was made the foreman for a trial |
|
based on charges of girl hitting her mother and resisting arrest with violence. She was an impoverished black single mother, living with her mother, from a tough West Palm Beach neighborhood. The DA "let it slip" she used drugs (crack), and was admonished by the court for entering information to the trial that was supposed to remain suppressed.
To penalize the DA for being an asshole, I voted not guilty for the resisting arrest charge. No one should ever hit their mother, so I voted guilty on that charge.
The moral of my story, don't be a smart ass defense attorney or DA and enter prohibited information, because I will flip my vote if the person appears disadvantaged and in need of a break.

|
Murder trial. When asked if I could apply the death penalty I answered as honestly as I could, that I just didn't know, but lean against it. Went home shortly thereafter.
Since then I just have to ask my doctor and she gives me a medical excuse. And that's not cheating cause between the heart and arthritis marathons are not on my calender.

15. called, but tossed off -- lawyer didn't like my thoughts on DUI |
|
I said I had read some articles questioning that blood-alcohol at low levels was not a reliable indicator of impairment. I've been called seven times, thrown out every time. I either know the wrong people or have the wrong opinion.

18. Well, the defendant copped a last minute plea... |
|
Edited on Sun Jan-22-06 11:07 PM by Autumn Colors
I was picked to serve on the jury of a criminal assault case, but I was called before the trial start date and told that the defendant had copped a guilty plea so the case was no longer going to trial.
Sitting in the witness box and getting interviewed by both attorneys was really nerve-wracking.

|
if I get pushed then the first day there, I tell the court if I am called to serve then any criminal defendant is automatically not guilty in my book, if a civil case any body suing a gov't agency wins, any body suing a company wins etc. I'm usually out of there in five minutes.

23. I ask because, among other reason, people here on DU |
|
often allude to /talk of citizenship. It just struck me that one of the highest duties that the 'regular guy' is called to do it JURY DUTY. Too many people have been led to believe that it's "cool to avoid it, that's what the RICH people do" hehehe..

Even though I've voted in every election since I was 18- inclusing the stupid special elections for things like soil & water commissioners.
However, my Republican father (with the same name) has been called about at least 6 or 7 times in the last 20 years or so. Hmmmm.

26. Called twice in the last six months! |
|
Where I lived before, called 4 times, served twice, once as jury foreperson on a 1st degree murder trial. Other trial was a civil case.
Can't tell me its 'random', with as many times as I've been called.

I haven't been called in several years. I've never served.
"Serving" meant a long commute, since you didn't appear locally but "down below," several frustrating hours of LA traffic away. It also meant many extra hours of time on my part doing prep for a substitute when I might never actually be chosen for duty. I was able to "opt out" because of child care issues brought on by the commute and long distance from home.
If the system were organized so that it wasted less of a prospective juror's time, I'd be more likely to want to serve.

28. I was called once, five years ago. |
|
I signed in, and got ready to watch a short video on jury service. Then, the judge came in and told us that everyone had pled guilty.
I have lived here for 27 years, and I have been called once. I live in a rural county. Maybe that is why.
When I was a teenager, my father served on a sequestered jury in a murder trial.

I've been on jury duty since late September. Here, they have you for 6 total months or 30 days served, whichever comes first. I've served 4 days so far, and have already been on a jury. I can't wait until it's over.
