Ford lay-offs. Oil at $69. Shaky stock market. Record deficits. Inflation. |

How does George W. Bush feel about all this?
It's going great!
Today, more Americans than ever before own their own homes.
And, in breaking news this morning: More Americans than ever before own their own shoes.

1. Watch for GOP spin overdrive this week. |
|
Their asses are cornered - they know it - Rove knows it - and the White House will pull out all stops: "Bush is doing a heckofa job in protecting us." "Big Bad Iran is coming to get us, but we are safe with Bush." "Our economy is strong and getting stronger." "Castro is the devil. Chavez is the devil. Anyone who isnt white is the devil." "Do NOT let your children see Brokeback Mountain!" "The Democrats in Congress should all be quartered." "The Democrats are Anti-American." Get the picture.

"Where There's smoke there's work!"
"Get Thee Behind Me!"
"You'll never work in this town again, Tire-biter!"
"We want to persecute you to the fullest extent of the law!"
"A Mighty Hot Dog is our Lord!"
"I'll take The Bag!"
"But it's really great shit Mrs. Presky!"

in the great republican sanctuary of Allen County OH, Lima Ford Engine Plant. It's a wonder that one is staying open.

5. More Americans live in homes owned by the bank.... |
|
Ownership is a slippery term when you buy with no money down or have a 125% of equity loan.

.... with about half of all homes sold with questionable loans (ARMs, zero-down, zero-principle, etc), our "record home ownership" is just a hairs-breadth away from "record foreclosures".
Any time you pump money into something, the speculators jump in and ruin it for everyone. Wait and see.

7. It's Going Great Because... |
|
...the media is, as usual, complicit in the white house spin that record corporate profits is equivalent to a good economy.
bush sr. tried this in '92, but we had a more honest media then. They were on their way to where they are now, but hadn't quite arrived.

Americans than ever before own their own homes.
I'm sure this means more in terms of real numbers.
And I'm sure this means *fewer* when measured as a percentage of the American population.
Never mind the fact that ownership really isn't the definition of mortgaged to the hilt.
In terms of outright ownership (as in paid for) and in terms of per capita ownership I'm sure home ownership is definitely on the decline.
