Afghanistan has been holding talks with Iran on purchase of electricity. The request was set forth during the Regional Economic Conference recently held in Kabul by the country`s Ministry of Commerce, Afghan Foreign Minister Abdullah announced.

President Hamed Karzai, in a speech given in the opening ceremony of the event, had emphasized on his nation`s pressing need for electricity and other officials reiterated the government`s priority plans on urgent supply of this energy to sustain the country`s ever-increasing growth.

Negotiations held with the Iranian officials on the sidelines of the conference to this end, nominated Iran to supply basic electricity need of this neighboring country for the ease of energy transfer due to long border shared by both countries. Iran used to export electricity to Afghanistan via Taibad border point.

"Afghanistan wishes further progress and development of Iran and will not let anyone drive a wedge between the two Moslem neighbors," Karzai added.

He also referred to the many shortcomings in his country due to past three decades of conflict.

"We should draw assistance from Iran’s experiences to boost the development drive in Afghanistan."
Expansion of mutual trade, joint investments legalization of border controls and expansion of judicial, legal and parliamentary relations are all among the factors upon which the two nations could forge closer ties, he said.
