DU'ers...goodgirl and I desperately need your help. Please Read
My wife had to work late on New Year's Eve. She called me at 1100pm to say she was on her way home. She knocked on the door around 1115pm and I remember opening the door....

The next thing I know, I'm sitting on the sofa, and my wife is in hysterics, sobbing uncontrollably. "What the fuck is going on?!" I screamed.

"You don't remember?" she said through tears.

"No!"

"You had a seizure"

And that's how I found out that I had epilepsy when I had a tonic-clonic (grand mal) seizure in front of my wife. She called the EMT's and I rang in the New Year with an o2 mask on my face and a blood pressure cuff on my arm.

The medicine I take makes me extremely tired and unable to think clearly and concentrate. I can hardly get up in the morning. I asked the owners at my work to change my schedule so that I only worked in the afternoon/evening, and instead they mocked my condition, & made the schedule worse for me by giving me two 10-8 days in a row, which eliminated my short (10-3) day.

Last Friday I had an appointment to see my dentist about getting my wisdom teeth out. Dr. C is a customer of mine, and since I gave him a good deal he was going to take care of the cost of the surgery for me.

On my way out there I started to feel weird, so I pulled over..it was 130pm. When I came to, it was 250pm. I don't remember anything.
I found a little motel for 25.00 (one of those Walker Inn's) and fell asleep until well past 11pm.

The next morning I was on time to work. The owner, who is not typically in on Sat. came over to my desk and I gave him my x-rays, motel receipt, doctor's note, told him I was sorry I didn't call, but I couldn't.

He told me "your services are no longer required here"

5 years.
1.5 m in sales each year
80% closing ratio

They even reversed the direct deposit of my paycheck the day before, causing us to incur over 600.00 in overdraft fees in one shot.

We're in serious financial jeopardy right now. We're on the verge of losing everything. All expenses totaled come out to around $6000.00, which would leave us just enough to pay for daily living expenses until the end of the month. I was supposed to pay our rent and sign a new lease today, but I was able to get one more day out of them....the others will not wait. I've got 24 hours at the most.

We only have two options:

1. Secure a personal loan. (don't know anyone capable, but I would pay it back at 9.99%)

2. Ask for help from our friends online. (more possible, but would take time...and we don't have that luxury)

Also, since our checking acct is -2500.00, any donations would have to be sent via Western Union, because the funds are available immediately. All you need is my Name, City, and phone number.

So that's it.
It could be anywhere from 30-90 days before I get any benefits. Same for Worker's Comp. We're on the edge of seeing everything we have disappear. Thank you for listening.

Please, DU. Help us if you can.

PM me if you can help or if you have questions on how to help.

2. Get to a lawyer.
I know they are expensive, but you need to take action now. If you have no previous issues with your employer, it sounds as if you have a case. I'm sure you can find one in your area that would give a low-cost or free consultation.

 Edited for emphasis.

Also, file for Social Security disability benefits and medicare ASAP. Did you or your employer carry any disability insurance? Find out.

Consult with more attorneys, too. There have been many common law protections that have developed over the years. Be sure to consult with those experienced in employment law. There may be state laws in place protecting disabled individuals.

I'm so sorry this is happening to you.

I encourage you to IMMEDIATELY submit applications for SSD, medicare and OCRC, and to meet with more lawyers. Make these things your "work" for the week!!!

I swear the process is created to beat down the down-trodden. Well, at least, it seems that way.

The other "job" is to recruit as much assistance as possible because we are, unfortunately, living in times where compassion is confused with anger, fear & greed. Nevertheless, there are PUH-LENTY of compassion-in-action people in this world. Gotta' embrace 'em and support 'em.

201. Why would you get worker's comp? You weren't injured on the job. WC
is only for work place related injuries and illness. I hope you've not pinned any hopes on this.

What you need to apply for is disability/ssi and unemployment. And while you're at it, hire a lawyer to sue for wrongful termination.

a local legal aid agency, they have attorneys and paralegals who are experts at this kind of thing and it sounds like you would more than qualify for their services free of charge. I'm a paralegal for a legal aid agency, and the vast majority of legal aid attorneys and paralegals are truly caring and concerned and do their best to work QUICKLY to help desperate people. Feel free to PM me if you need more info or guidance on that.

I was in a similar situation and I was told to contact the EEOC first and let them investigate. They moved very quickly. Their findings only backed up my case and going to them insured that I didn't waste money on a lawyer if I didn't really have a case.

immediately. You can shop around until you find one who will take your case on contingency.

HOWEVER, keep in mind the system is rigged and it could be your employer doesn't require a good reason for fire you and you may thus be only eligible for unemployment.

even if they could fire you on the spot, I've never seen an employer who pays you for work in advance, so they owed you the previous paycheck.

Check the dates of your last paycheck, it should say what dates it was for, if it was for work already performed, then they need to pay you for the time you worked.

92. Seriously google SSDI Lawyers - they don't win unless you do
SSDI will at least provide some casy and a good chance for medicare benefits , your lawyer/representative should be able to get a statement from your last employer as to the reason he dismissed you.

Your former employer was savy in knowing that you could easily be resonsible for his insurance rates going up.

If you can't safely work, it sounds like your case is somewhat unpredictable, it worked for a friend but he had to file twice because he didn't use someone like "Disability of America" google it, they'll talk to you toll free, nothing to lose.
good luck

Retain an attorney and do not request legal advice on a damn bulletin board or in any other manner on the internet! Geezuz. Would you ask folks for medical advice on the internet? Of course not, instead, you'd ask your own M.D.

Again, get an attorney and present your facts and circumstances and don't go to the internet to "second guess" him/her!!

BTW, how the hell do any of us know that you are who you are and have the problems that you have? We don't. So don't ask us here in DU for legal help, medical help, or solicit for money regarding your problems, real or otherwise.

If they can give him reasonable time to get medical assistance, then provide accomodations for him, he can still get his job back. But a lawyer can tell him for certain.

Summary
Epilepsy has been known since Babylonian times (2100–689 B.C.). It was described by Hippocrates, who correctly identified the brain as the organ responsible for the phenomenon of epilepsy (Menkes 1990). The term epilepsy is derived from the Greek word epilepsia, meaning “to seize.” Physicians sometimes use the Latin word ictus when referring to a seizure or ictal to describe the time period when a seizure occurs (Epilepsy Foundation 2003a).

The Epilepsy Foundation of America (2003a) describes epilepsy as a neurological condition that causes a person to be susceptible to having seizures. A seizure occurs during sudden, brief electrical changes or disturbances in the brain. The electrical disturbances (misfiring or when brain cells are not working properly) alter a person's consciousness, movements, or actions for a period of time. Seizures vary from a very brief sensory disruption, to a short period of staring or unconsciousness, or to a convulsion. People of all races and from all nations are affected by seizures. But experiencing a seizure(s) does not always indicate epilepsy. Young children can have seizures caused by a high fever (a febrile convulsion). Other seizures are caused by metabolic or chemical imbalances, alcohol or drug abuse, alcohol or drug withdrawal, cardiac disease, infectious disease, etc.

There is a significant difference between a seizure and “passing out” (known as syncope). Syncope involves losing consciousness, but for non-epileptic reasons, such as a cardiac condition that reduces blood flow to the brain or hypoglycemia which causes a sudden drop in blood sugar. A single seizure does not mean an individual has epilepsy (NDCCD 2002). Physical changes caused by seizure activity are termed epilepsy when referring to a chronic condition that is characterized by recurrent seizures (Benbadis et al. 2001). Therefore, epilepsy represents a condition wherein multiple abnormal states result in a specific type of seizure activity as a common end point manifestation (Menkes 1990).

37. He may not be eligible
Ohio has cut its Medicaid eligibility drastically.

Unless you are deemed disabled or have an income under the poverty level and have minor children living at home, there's nothing.

The upside is, once your condition is fully diagnosed and stabilized with medicine, you'll gradually feel better and become accustomed to the medication.

My hubby had his first grand mal seizure about 25 years ago when he was in his early 20's. There were some tests at first, then he had to try some different medications before he found the one that worked best for him without making him feel too tired or out of it.

You also can't drive for a while. In Ohio, the law used to be that anyone diagnosed with epilepsy couldn't drive for a year. I'm not sure what it is now. Hubby got by with me driving and taking the bus to work.

He had some career setbacks as a result, but recovered. He's now a computer consultant making good money. The diagnosis caused him to change careers and he's glad he did.

You'll get through this. Its traumatic and very upsetting at first. The first year after is a long period of adjustment and regaining your security and confidence.

Hang in there it will improve.

unlawful last time I checked and this is not legal advise because I'm not a lawyer, but sound like they have discriminated. You could also have a claim for age if you are over 40, but definitely file fed disability discrimination claim with EEOC. But that doesn't help you in the mean time. Have you contacted the epilepsy organizations in your area to see if they have any funds for exigent circumstances? Also see if there is a Save the Family in your area.

They FIRED you AFTER you notified them that you have Epilepsy ... THEY CANNOT DO THAT.

My sister-in-law's company fired her WHILE she was home recuperating from knee replacement surgery. They tried to block her unemployment and screw up her insurance. She is in the process of suing them as we cyberspeak. She has a good case.

Her company had under 15 employees also, but it doesn't matter, a person CANNOT be fired for being sick. They can make any excuses they want, but they fired you because of your physical condition. Please Please Please get an employment attorney. It's unfortunate, if you lived in Illinois I could recommend one, unfortunately, I do not know any employment lawyers in Ohio.

unless they paid in advance which virtually no company does. That should only take the threat of a lawyer to get accomplished since they could end up owing treble damages for that behavior.

34. Also..see if you have a way of getting on disability...SSDI
Edited on Mon Jan-23-06 07:36 PM by mom cat
Apply now. It can take up to 5 months from the day you apply. If your condition gets regulated in that time and you can work, then you can drop the claim, but apply now, just in case. Just call Social Security at 1-800-772-1213 and tell them you want to start a disability claim. Your application is dated from that call, so the sooner that you make it, the better. Please do not delay. Also, ask your doctor for support. It sounds like you cannot work now and would qualify.
I hope that your condition gets regulated and that you find medication that does not knock you out. But...don't count on it. File now.

Updated because I can't spell.

41. Why sign another lease?
I do not mean to be disrespectful or mean here but why would you be considering signing another lease you cannot pay for? It sounds ideal to me. Can you move in with friends or relatives until this sorts itself out?

You had to be living on the edge for a while for this to sink so fast. With two of you working why are you in such dire straights so quickly?

I have been living on between and 9,000 to 5,000 a year for four now two people with a condition I also have to pay outside of insurance since about 1990 and but would not be bankrupt in less than a month.

I do wish you well but have a hard time comprehending.

Lots of people live paycheck to paycheck because the paychecks are too small..
We don't make lots and are paying our own health insurance and son's college tuition.
If I lost my job we would be up the creek in fairly short order- and we HAVE a bit of savings.
I didn't entirely comprehend your next to last sentence, but good for you if you are in
good financial shape in spite of making so little.

....Western Union is available for donations at all hours. You might not be able to pick the $$ up until morning if there isn't a location near you. But many grocery stores and nearly all convenience stores handle WU.

Also, have you considered starting a Paypal account? Millions of people do business every day using Paypal. It's very simple and $$ can be transferred into your bank account or you can have them send you a money order. Untold entities on the Internet accept donations through Paypal, including DU.

As I recall, the last time I used Western Union, the fees were kind of ridiculous.

on Edit:

PayPal sounds like a good idea:

PayPal Send Money

The problem is that the only way to get the money immediately is to have it transfered to a bank account. If you cannot use your own, do you have a friend who could help. Otherwise you will need to wait for PayPal to send you a check.

56. Kicked...
Goodboy, when it comes right down to it, employees have very little in the way of rights. As I understand the system here, you either show up for work, use sick or vacation time, apply for disability (if you have it), or you're screwed. Epilepsy, if that's what this is, can usually be controlled, but it takes a skilled physician, trial and error, and time - so SSDI may be denied all the way through the appeal process, depending on the circumstances. I wouldn't bank on SSDI if I were you. I'd apply, and I'd appeal every step of the way, but don't count on it. Workers Comp is for job related injuries.

As one who has some experience with work related issues surrounding disability, I don't see too many good options for you, goodboy, beyond reaching out for help as you are doing. Although I would add one thing to the list of things people recommended: contact your Vocational Rehabilitation office and apply for services. A VR counselor will likely know what other services are available in the area to help meet your immediate needs - and there may not be too much - republicans have gutted many good programs. But there will likely be some things that will help get you through. I know that surviving day to day is uppermost in your mind, as it would be in mine, but getting back to work is almost always the very best solution - and VR exists to help you do that.

So I'd be focusing my energies three things: 1) dealing with the epilepsy (and making sure that's what it is), 2) making a plan to survive for the next few months, 3) getting back to work - whether that means retraining or whatever. All the rest is fine, but IMHO, it should be secondary to these three. If an attorney really thinks he can get a few thousand bucks for you, I'd certainly proceed, but I wouldn't count on it, and I wouldn't waste a lot of time or money on it. Like I said, I have seen literally hundreds of people go through the type of thing you are encountering, and in all those years I can't recall even one who received much help via our legal system - with the exception of very prescribed and common issues, like SSDI/SSI or workers comp. But as far as suing your employer, certainly go for it as a matter of principle if you can, but don't bank on it, and don't let it take center stage. It's going to be peanuts compared to the value of your time spent earning.

On a positive note, in all the years I was involved in this, almost everyone made it through the ordeal completely intact. In fact, they usually end up far better off than they would have been had they remained where they were. I've seen this repeatedly. As hard as it is to imagine now, there is a very good chance that in 5 years you will look back on this as a positive turning point in your life.

155. Done, goodboy
Karma coming back to you from all the help you gave Andy in his time of need.

Now get in touch with the Epilepsy Foundation chapter in your area. They can give you a lot of good advice and referrals and may also be able to help you with some emergency financial assistance.

Do not let this illness take over your life. If you read my earlier post, my husband has been living with this condition for over 25 years. The first couple of years were hard for him, but he's done very well since then.

There are a lot of good meds out there, some new ones, so try different ones til you find the one that's right for you. My husband takes valproic acid.

You also need to stop driving until your condition is stabilized. Find someone to drive you or take the bus.

Good luck you are in our prayers.

you cannot use 401k funds to pay medical expenses, except to forestall a bankruptcy.

88. Actually, the issuer CAN reverse a direct deposit
They can't take out more than deposited, but they can reverse the deposit. I have seen it used with paycheck errors, but the correct amount was deposited at the same time. Reversing a deposit for time worked because he got laid off can be done, but in my opinion, it is highly unethical.

I'm not disputing the rest of what you said, I haven't formed an opinion. But I wanted to let you know that a direct deposit can be reversed.

99. Call your local newspaper. Ask them to cover your story.
Publicly shaming the employer might persuade him to give you your job back, or at least the $600.

Better yet, a sympathetic new employer unafraid to hire someone with a disability may step forward.

You might also ask a friend or relative to start a charitable account to benefit your family, and tell the reporter about the fund so others may donate.

105. Dear goodboy
I'm sorry to hear of your situation. I've sent a donation via the Amazon account. Hopefully you'll be getting it shortly.

If the meds you are taking are making you too drowsy you might be able to try another medication. There are many anticonvulsants on the market and it is possible you could find one that works as well (or better) than what you are on now, without the extreme drowsiness. From what you described it seems you are still having seizure activity so a med change might just fix that as well.

As others have recommended, a good disability lawyer and lots of legwork towards getting SSDI/Medicaid and other benefits are crucial right now. It's a lot of work, I know, but it will be of great assistance to you.

Best wishes .
Buffy

It's possible that the ads in your phone book might indicate if they do, but you may just have to call around and ask different lawyers if they do. Best of luck to you.

I have an open, active, verified and confirmed Paypal account in good standing and I will be willing to drive to you, or overnight $$ if necessary if you'd like to have donations sent to it. I also have a debit card attached to it but it can only draw $400/day from an ATM machine. I can spend up to $3000 (just checked and it's 3000, not 4000) with the M/C debit card in actual purchases/day.

If all else fails, I can shuffle money to another Paypal account my son has (with debit card and all) in order to double the daily limits.

Edited on Tue Jan-24-06 09:05 AM by mikelewis
I sell and install home/commercial security systems in NE Ohio. We are looking for sales person help. If you bust your ass like I do, you can make some pretty decent money fast. It's commission only of course which means no benefits but this might tide you over for a while until you find something you like. I talked to my boss this morning and he said he'd help if we can. PM me if you're interested and I can give you my contact info.

I can also help with the paypal account though I don't know if I can get it set up fast enough to help. I understand it takes a while to setup and verify with the bank. PM if you need help with this too.

160. overdraft fees
Branch managers at every bank I have dealt with have had the authority to waive overdraft fees, if they choose to do so.

If it were me I would grab the receipts and x-rays and any other relevant documentation and visit the bank.

I would plead my case with the manager and ask for their help.

Their own documentation should show that a payment was made and then retracted by the employer.

A $600 overdraft refund would go a long way.

I have sent in my modest help via amazon...

Have faith, things will get better.

173. Just invested $50 in your future via Amazon
This thread has some good ideas. I hope the job offer works out, as well as help from the epilepsy orgs. And talking with the bank mgr. to get the overdraft fees waived sounds like a good approach, too. How can you be faulted when your employer withdrew funds paid for work already performed? :eyes:

AND get the media on this!! Contact your local paper, TV & radio stations. If you're like me, you probably wouldn't want the publicity, but if you could shame your old employer into at least giving you your final paycheck it could be a help.

Also, you might want to contact Clark Howard's radio program -- see http://clarkhoward.com/ (You would not hvae to give any personal info on the air.) He's an Atlanta consumer radio show host who is carried on stations nationwide, and also on the internet(s). He has a team of people who can be very helpful to callers.

Good luck, and remember we're all pulling for you and goodgirl.

187. Same thing happened to me about 12 years ago
Had 3 siezures in a month and I never had one before. I was put on the drugs (dilantin) then took myself off because I could not concentrate for more than six hours in a row. There are other anti-convulsants out there I'm told have fewer side effects. I didn't bother.

So I get a siezure now about every 2-3 years. Grand mal, whole 9 yards. Usually when I have been drinking a lot. But I can work now and I deal with the consequences.

All is not lost. Good luck.

191. another thing to think about
A study has shown and experience confirms that most households can raise at least $1000 in days by selling unwanted items on eBay. It really works. It won't address the need you have this very day, but it could pay for something next week or ten days. It's simple and many experienced DU-ers could coach you through your first listing. Many people make their living from eBay, at home in their own time and space.

albeit not much of a living these days, as I lost my supplier for what I used to sell. I fell into it due to a chronic illness that took a couple of years to diagnose, got turned down for disability (which is normal for what I have, you have to get lawyers and stuff), then started doing really well with ebay so didn't bother following up with the disability. Not doing so well now, but getting by, and hope to find something new to sell one of these days that will be more lucrative!

198. *********PAYPAL UPDATE**********
Edited on Tue Jan-24-06 01:34 PM by ohio_liberal
Goodboy has graciously allowed me to accept Paypal payments on his behalf since he doesn't have an active account and I do. I also live in the same state and can get funds to him with reasonable speed. All payments will be sent directly to him, minus any Paypal fees incurred, and any additional transaction fees for using the Paypal debit card. I can only give my word to you all that I will be completely honest and open and won't run off to exotic locations with the funds.

PM me for information on where to send Paypal payments. After what sweet Andy and his friends went through I don't feel comfortable posting it for Freepers to see. Unless of course, in the interests of complete transparency, other DUers think it's absolutely necessary. I sell on eBay and I need this account to stay open not only for goodboy but for me as well. I'd rather not give the freeperati the chance to shut it down, even temporarily.

229. ANOTHER PAYPAL UPDATE>>>>>>>
If you decide to send a Paypal payment, please make sure that you fully complete the transaction. We had a slight mixup tonight with the confusing process so I thought I should clarify. There's more than one page to click through. You should receive an email confirming your payment. If you don't get the email you can check your transaction history on the Paypal site. If the transaction isn't there then chances are you haven't completed all the steps and confirmed your payment. If you have any questions, just send me a PM and I'll be happy to help!

209. The way people treat epilepsy sucks.
Edited on Tue Jan-24-06 02:35 PM by skids
From experience with people close to me (don't want to get into more detail) I knew about this condition from childhood. When I was in high school I went to work delivering pizza, and one of the other drivers was a 40-something-year old epileptic. He was also poor and stressed, and sometimes that would cause a lapse in taking the meds. Stay on the meds. You're perfectly safe as long as you do. One night we were in the pizza shop and some headlights shown in the window. And got slowly closer. And eventually this guy's car came slowly to rest on the curbstone in front of the store window.

He had forgotten his meds at home but was so in need of the job that he tried to risk it instead of calling in late to go back to get them. He was hunched over his steering wheel drooling. We got him out and I found a wooden handle for him to bite on in case the seizure resumed. Eventually he revived and explained that he'd skipped his meds and was even cogent enough to drive home. The manager was freaking out thinking he was on drugs. I calmed him down and explained epilepsy to him, and told him the guy would be just fine as long as allowances were made at the shop to make sure he had his meds. If I hadn't been there, I have no doubt that guy would have lost his job that night.

215. Your experience is very narrow
and in many cases, not true.

I am an Epileptic. I have been for over fourteen years.

Meds do not stop seizures in everyone. I have taken every seizure drug on the market and not one of them has stopped a seizure. Presently I take none and have the same occurrence as when on meds.

Putting something in the mouth of someone having a seizure is an old wife's tale and could produce serious damage. When a grand mal occurs, the jaw clamps shut like lockjaw. Place a finger in the mouth of someone seizing can result in losing said finger. Or, in the case of a wooden handle, it could result in broken teeth and jaw.

Please do not perpetuate these myths. They help no one.

224. I agree about the finger part.

Definitely not advised. Also you're right perhaps I shouldn't have said that medication is a guaranteed safety. What I was trying to convey is that for the majority of people, for whom medication works, it is of tantamount importance not to lapse in taking the medication, not even for a single dose.

As far as the biting object, that's what I was told to do by an epileptic (with something soft, not metal, and not something you have to get your fingers near the teeth to do, and not to try to open clenched jaws if the seizure has already gotten that far.) I do see by googling that it is discouraged. I'll have to talk to them about that.

226. ---update--- Just got back from Urgent Care...
I had a seizure early this morning, and I came out of it with severe back pain. I tried everything from Ibuprofin to Naproxin to Mobic and Flexeril, and the pain still broke through. I did get some relief from a Thermacare Heat Wrap, but it was only slight, and short-lived.

At Urgent Care some x-rays of my back were taken and the UC doc said they looked o.k,. He gave me 10 lortab and sent me home. And here I am. I can only take 1 lortab every six hours b/c they're the 7.5/700 mg, so I'd reach my maximum intake of tylenol quickly, but so far, I feel very little effect from them. So that's about it.

Thank you for your continued support...I think we're at 20% right now. For anyone wishing to donate using paypal, please PM Ohio_liberal, who has kindly agreed to accept donations on my behalf.

I gotta lay down.

Peace,

goodboy

230. I gave back in December !
Edited on Tue Jan-24-06 08:33 PM by nedbal
I have read many of goodboys posts here over the last years, especially when he helped Andy, while I'm not looking to open up doubts about goodboys needs, he did make a plea prior to New years that was quickly deleted by the mods due to something to the effect that there can't be 2 requests for donations threads at the same time and there may have been a thread that was for a DU member in/near New Orleans at the time. so it appears goodboys troubles started before the new year. If the archive search wasn't disabled at this time one could get a link to the thread, but the link would lead to "thread was deleted".

***on edit , as I recall his december plea was to the effect that the only decent doctors that treat his condition were out of his health care network and he had to pay out of pocket for them. That was causing him major finacial hardship. goodboys post earlier in this thread reminded me " I've been in pain management at PainNet, which is not in network with my insurance, so I have to pay 75.00 per visit 3x perweek."" edit off***

second question is really about the amazon system , it states you have 30 days to cancel a honor system payment, yet they did post it to my credit card account the next day? so how do they cancel a amazon payment? if even 20 days pass it could already be added to a statement received and possibly paid.

from the email I got from amazon when I gave to goodboy on dec 15

there is a delay problems with amazon to do it tomorrow.....

once again I in no way am trying to imply goodboy does not need help. I contributed to him as he helped Andy quite a
LOT

yet when I set up my amazon account to receive payments from my amazon sales ( none yet ) I had to tie it to my checking account. goodboy does not want paypal as it would go into his checking , but one could get a paypal debit card and not need a checking account I believe? could be the same with amazon? I reallllllly should confirm this. it's been awhile since I set up my accounts and I may forget all the possibilities of how to get funds out / withdraw funds.

252. I'm not implying he doesn't need help either.
But I'll be honest here, I felt pretty skeptical when it came to light that this was the 2nd plea for help when the first one was not disclosed. It made me question the the cry for "desperate" help.

Crying for help because you need a life or death operation....most definitely desperate.
Crying for help because you're a single parent who lost your job and you've got five children to clothe and feed....certainly desperate.

Crying for desperate help (when you have an able-bodied spouse with a job) because you bounced some checks and you need to re-sign your lease....not so sure if I'd call that desperate. More like, welcome to the real world. I mean, there's lots of us who could legitimately cry for help if that fits the definition of desperate. If one was asking for donations strictly for one's medication costs, then that's different in terms of being desperate.

But I guess I'm getting caught up in a sidepoint here over the term desperate. The actual point is whether he could simply use some help right now. If that's in fact the case, then he's a fortunate person that there's people here who are willing to help out. There's nothing to feel bad about when you help others, whether they're truly "desperate" or they just think they are.

One must have a checking account and a credit card attached to a Paypal account and the account must be open for 60 days in order to apply for the Paypal debit card.

254. Am I the only one here who questions the appropriateness of this thread?
Sorry about your situation and all, but this is a political discussion board - you seem to have a lot of friends here, why not PM them and do this behind the scenes?

Just sayin' -- enough with the gratuitous kicks already.

(Flame away)...

271. "gratuitous?" my kicks are, yes, freely given, free of any obligation. is
that a problem, to you?

this is not the politics discussion board, it is the general discussion board. have you not seen the difference?

it would take far more time to pm all who will see this and help out.

just sayin...

thanks for asking and kicking with us!

peace!

291. I believe GoodBoy is referring to his wife as "GoodGirl" --
without intending to imply she is registered as such on DU. It is a pretty common way for people to refer to their significant others with a minor change in name variant, and is not viewed as being deceitful. For example, MrSniggles would call his beloved wife "MrsSniggles" if she weren't registered on DU as a way to identify her relationship to him, while PuppyGirl would probably refer to her husband as PuppyMan or PuppyBoy (depending on a mood). These names are made up by me at 5:30 in the morning, and do not refer to any real DU'ers (that I know of).

I don't know GoodBoy or his wife well, but (if they are the people I think they are), I do believe I met them at Andy Stephenson's funeral, which I was able to go to thanks to another DU'er picking up my airfare at a time when I didn't have the funds. I haven't forgotten that kindness, and so I've kicked in a small amount. And, when I was working on getting New Hampshire recounted, a whole bunch of people dug deep to help make it happen. I haven't forgotten that, either. For me, its a "pay it forward" moment.

And I get to do a small kick while answering your (understandable) issue -- bonus point!

Can't you just send your friend a couple of bucks?

I'm sure there are a lot of people here who are in similiar situations and struggling with bills. I can certainly empathize. I don't know your friend, but please explain why he was also here in early December asking for donations?

I don't get it.

Sorry.

268. hi. sorry. dial-up takes that long to reload such a long thread.
thank you for asking.
have you read this whole thread? it will tell you some of what this man, this couple means to this community.
everyone who cares about them deserves to see this thread, and know of their need. kicking this thread for all to see it is my only possible contribution at this point.
maybe you could contribute enough that they don't need it kicked any more? that would be very kind, and very like others in this deeply compassionate community.

from what i read above, his request in december was removed because of other then-more urgent fundraising. this thread speaks of much more urgent need, i believe. this man has been there for others in dire need, too.

meanwhile, thank you for talking. it keeps it kicked but this way i'm more actively involved.

and now, for another long re-load. thank you for your patience with that.

peace!

270. Can you give it to me in a nutshell?
From the little bit that I've gleaned, it looks like he's a middle class guy who's lost his job and is facing some medical problems.

It's not that I'm not understanding, but there are a lot of people in this position.

Frankly, there are a number of people I know personally who are in worse situations, but they aren't here begging on GD.

What gives? I'm a bleeding heart liberal. If you can honestly tug on my heart strings, I'll kick in a couple of bucks, but it needs to be more than fretting about how he's gonna make his six grand monthly nut.

275. not so many lose everything in a flash. have you ever had a seizure? or
acute intractable pain, with no medical coverage that will grant you relief? please do read the thread.

more than that, when someone we care about is in real need and crisis, we do all possible to help. it's decent.

this man is dear to very many of us. his hardship concerns us, personally. his pain hurts us intensely.

and this community pours out monies and resources to every possible need and just cause in the world, as much as possible. so, too, to those of our own community.

i'm sure you'll grow to appreciate it if you stay around a while.

thank you for asking, and for caring to know.

peace!

278. Nope. But we all stress about our monthly nut and our health.
Bad stuff happens to good people. This is not the place to solicit donations.

I've been here for quite a long time - thanks. I only post about once a month. This thread, however is the only time in almost 5 years that I've resorted to alerting the mods - although fat lot of good it appears to have done.

To be fair I haven't read the thread, since it's comprised mostly of your "kick" posts.

I hate to sound insensitive, but there seem to be more deserving causes.

g'night. wish i hadn't gotten you wrong. i wish that for you.

i'm sad for you.

I don't care how many times you kick it, but despite our discussion, I still don't understand your rationale.

Feel free to be sad for me. Perhaps it will help you gain a new perspective, as I can state categorically that your sympathy is not needed, though thanks for the thought.

Sorry if I've offended you. I'm confident that your generosity is sincere and that you truly believe in the righteousness of your cause. You just haven't convinced me. Not even a bit.

I don't think this is the appropriate forum to solicit donations to cover one's personal expenses. That is why I alerted the mods and that is why I've attempted to engage you in discourse.

Our failure to agree reinforces my original perceptions regarding this thread.

Good night.

it is all freely given out of the generosity of our hearts.

goodnight
