Great documentaries...
I highly recommend the BBC documentary "the Power of Nightmares" which is available for free download courtesy of the internet archive (and UK TV license fees): http://www.archive.org/details/ThePowerOfNightmares

here's the IMDB background (if you care): http://imdb.com/title/tt0430484/board/nest/20823004

Recommend more that people might not have heard of...

6. 2 critical insights from the documentary
Edited on Tue Jan-24-06 10:40 AM by kenny blankenship
1) the tactics of "Al Quaeda" are the last kicks of a militant movement that has failed and fizzled out across the Muslim world, not the beginning of a resurgent radical Islamic terrorism that can bring a "global war" against us.
2) there is no such thing as a coherent, organized, hierarchical network of terror cells called Al Quaeda which extends into "50 or 60 countries" and which takes orders from Osama bin Laden. OBL was peripheral to the main Islamist movement, and the "Al Quaeda" monster attributed to him is largely the imagination & fabrication of US Government officials trying to prosecute OBL for terrorist incidents related to him.
----
from the foregoing the documentary concludes that the danger of "Al Quaeda" is an IDEA, the idea of radical Islamists striking at the source of liberal secular society and capitalism, i.e., us here in the states--instead of striking at their own governments and replacing them, which they have proved unable to do. It's an idea that evolved out of the logic of Islamism in its decline, and taken to its logical extremes it has "authorized" the killing of Muslim and non-Muslim alike. The danger of the idea is, on the one hand, that while our govt's seek in vain for "sleeper cells" and networks that don't exist, they promote the idea through their repressiveness and they ignore the risk that they are creating more fertile ground for the seed of "al quaeda-ism" to catch root in. The idea doesn't cross our borders armed with visas, in the form of sleeper agents infiltrating our society from without, waiting for a coded message from OBL, but instead it may catch on with disaffected persons already within our borders acting on their own. Furthermore, our politicians in the West having failed to deliver the Utopia envisioned by full employment programs and enlightened social policy that typified the middle decades of the 20th century, now only have terrorism--the projection of nightmares--to restore them to a position of commanding authority within our societies. Therefore the second and greater danger of "Al Quaeda" is that we are creating authoritarian police states to combat a phantom menace, in an imaginary conflict that has no projected end, and thus we are sinking into a form of government that, in its own nature and logic, is as "terrorist" as the vanguard Islamists like OBL, whom it claims to be hunting.

7. It's also interesting that both neocons and bin-laden took credit for
the downfall of the Soviet Union.

Neocons believing they had outspent them to death, often saying Reagan defeated communism single-handedly. Bin Laden through guerilla war. When it was really just rotting from the inside.

Also intersting is the penchant for neocons to exaggerate threats to US security.

2. I consider it required viewing.
Baby It's Cold Outside
The Power of Nightmares
Transcript of Episode 1, “Baby It’s Cold Outside”
Originally aired on BBC 2, 20 October 2004, 9 pm
Written and Produced by Adam Curtis

VO: In the past, politicians promised to create a better world. They had different ways of achieving this. But their power and authority came from the optimistic visions they offered to their people. Those dreams failed. And today, people have lost faith in ideologies. Increasingly, politicians are seen simply as managers of public life. But now, they have discovered a new role that restores their power and authority. Instead of delivering dreams, politicians now promise to protect us from nightmares. They say that they will rescue us from dreadful dangers that we cannot see and do not understand. And the greatest danger of all is international terrorism. A powerful and sinister network, with sleeper cells in countries across the world. A threat that needs to be fought by a war on terror. But much of this threat is a fantasy, which has been exaggerated and distorted by politicians. It’s a dark illusion that has spread unquestioned through governments around the world, the security services, and the international media.

VO: This is a series of films about how and why that fantasy was created, and who it benefits. At the heart of the story are two groups: the American neoconservatives, and the radical Islamists. Both were idealists who were born out of the failure of the liberal dream to build a better world. And both had a very similar explanation for what caused that failure. These two groups have changed the world, but not in the way that either intended. Together, they created today’s nightmare vision of a secret, organized evil that threatens the world. A fantasy that politicians then found restored their power and authority in a disillusioned age. And those with the darkest fears became the most powerful.

4. Required Viewing!

I'd second that.
It's about fear. And how it's being used against you.
And it's a love story, how the neocons and the jihaddis' found a future in each others arms.
Nice background on the neocon philosophy too.

Five stars!

edit-I saw some gossip in another forum about this doc, it's likened by some to the colored pill in "The Matrix" movie.
Some folks won't be the same after viewing it.
It's also up on videogoogle-
