“What we’ve got is a failure in society, whether it’s in Mount Pleasant with yuppie parents or whether it’s on the East Side with poor crackhead parents,” Shirley said Friday. “We pick up stray animals and spay them. These mothers need to be spayed if they can’t take care of theirs. … Once they have a child and it’s running the streets, to let them continue to have children is totally unacceptable.” Deadbeat dads might ought to be sterilized as well, he said.

1. Although it would be purely symbolic at this time
But, does this mean that Poppy and Bar get to be sterilized?

2. He better watch it
If he gets it passed...there'll be almost no future puke voters.

4. too late to do anything about HIS parents, huh?
Nothing like preaching government out of people's lives while wanting it to take over.

7. Eugenics
Get rid of the defectives before they can ruin it for the rest of us. There's something in it for everyone. They can stop the bad and broken people in this world from creating more misery, just don't get mad when your ox gets gored.

8. I can't help thinking of that neglectful dad in Virginia
IIRC, his name is Kevin Kelly, and he lives in Loudoun County. Long story short, while his wife and oldest daughter were off in Ireland visiting a sick relative, he completely fell down on the parenting of his other 12 children. After running errands, he left his youngest, a baby not quite two, in a van for hours on a warm May afternoon. He totally forgot her. He thought the second oldest was caring for her. It never occurred to him to make sure she was okay. And she died of hyperthermia. He had showed a pattern of neglect of his kids in the weeks before her death. He got not even a slap on the wrist. Every year, for seven years, he must spend one day in jail. That's it.

Now, if I were deciding this guy's sentence, I would demand he be sterilized. I don't give a damn if he's Catholic. Surely preventing him from having another child is better than enabling him to have another child to neglect to death.

I'm sorry, if a parent shows a pattern of abuse and neglect of his/her children, and the state has to continually intervene, that person has lost the right to become parents. At some point, we have to say, okay, you have abused your kids, you have neglected your kids, you are a bad parent, you are NOT having any more children. With every right comes responsibility.
