Race for control of Senate: "As close as it can get"
October 2, 2006

In the battle for control of the U.S. Senate, it’s all tied with 49 seats rated as Republican or Leans Republican and 49 seats are rated as Democrat or Leans Democrat (see State-by-State Summary). Only two states remain in the Toss-Up category--New Jersey, and Missouri.

1. NJ DUers seem pretty confident that we'll win there
I sure hope they're right.

2. I'm not as confident
as I was about that race. The local political situation is not good there.

4. Menendez
has been tied to some corruption stuff and that's a general problem for Democrats in New Jersey. Secondly, the party's leaders approval ratings are not very high. The local environment just isn't very good right now. The only way we win is if Bush's unpopularity outweighs these factors. Jersey has trended Dem in recent elections, but it is still an unpredictable state.
