Logged on figuring DU would be buzzing about Moyers. Do see a thread down there almost at the bottom of the page,,,but that's it?

So far I cannot gather all my thoughts and emotions together to form a coherent thought and wanted to wade through the DUer buzz. But no buzz is to be found on DU.

What gives?

3. Yours is the third thread I've seen on this in the past 10 minutes
That's not bad at this hour on a weeknight. Besides, as great as the broadcast was and as much as I love Moyers, there wasn't a lot there that hasn't been widely discussed here for a long time.

Not trying to be a downer. But I don't think you need to worry about this.

my last one giving a link to check when it reairs in each area, and if you didn't see it, it's well worth your time to do so!

I also said during the entire show, I was hoping all the tribes and christians who were USED by this crowd of criminals were watching too!

It sure looks to me like a lot of people will be helping crowd our prisons in the near future!!!!

The main point was delivered at the end I believe
They said that this mess is institutionalized now and the only way to stop it is for the people to rise up. For the people to rise up, a leader is needed.

They said a real leader is not out there right now. I agree.

So it will continue.

24. There are so many good people out there with good ideas
but no real clear leaders.

These calls for street protests are just a placebo in my opinion. We need a coherent call to action from a credible source.

I keep doing stuff, but it all seems like small stuff considering the big picture. I am ready to go and do. But go where and do what?

12. But that was the point
The election won't change a thing.

The "What's the matter with Kansas" Tom Franks guy said the Democratic leadership is clueless to the real mess. If it should so happen that parties change leadership this time, how can this corruption mess be stopped if the new party in power has no clue. In fact the Democratic party leadership are salivating because they want in on the largess they see being handed out. Both Moyers and the other guy agreed.

At least it might derail the neocon empire dream and lameduck the rest of Bush's presidency. Your right, political solutions don't solve philosophical problems.

The best book I've ever read on leadership was 'The Heart of Business' by Peter Koestenbaum. If Bush was a real leader after he gets out of office he would devote the rest of his life to charities for Iraq vets, their families and for Iraqis. I'd bet every cent I've got he won't do that.

71. If someone like yourself has closely followed the story perhaps
there was nothing new. For myself who was aware of the scandal but lacked a detailed understanding, the piece was priceless. I think a vast majority of people like myself haven't understood the full scope and Moyers suceeded in spades in presenting the scandal in its entirety.

I hope each of us reads through the webpages Bill Moyer put up about this Citizenship series. There are lots of great pages and links to more there!!! ;-)

20. Airing times vary across these United States.
It was a very good program. It was also very depressing. The institutional house of corruption that DeLay built -with the help of his God- will take a very long time to remodel.

It will take much more than an election to repair the damage.... although electing Democrats is a desperately needed first step.

37. I just watched it a little while ago, including the discussion
with Ornstein and the other guy--I forget his name, but he's the author of "What's the Matter With Kansas?" They said corruption itself is nothing new as we all know, but what *IS* new about the "Culture of Corruption" is the level of it, and how brazen and obvious is the quid pro quo. What was depressing was them saying it's so entrenched it will take more than one election cycle to clean it up, probably about ten years. I think that's the estimate they gave anyway.

62. Corruption may be more institutionalized since DeLay
put his special touch on the way the game is played, but Americans have known for a very long time that corruption in our government is rife and entrenched.

I think we simply have no idea how we can combat what seems to go hand-in-hand, just like, uh, "bread-and-butter"?

Politics and Corruption

We get the government that the money-men pay for, and the devil take the hindmost!

Where do we start to dismantle a system that is so pervasive by now and integral in our form of government? It didn't have to be this way, of course. But we all sat out here in the heartlands and on the coasts, from north to south and the two states beyond the Lower 48, and allowed this steady degradation to take place.

I've been so disgusted for so long that when I first came to DU, I didn't even think I could ever like Democrats again, purely because of the jaded, selfish, greedy political attitudes that prevail in most officials of both parties, if not all parties.

Learning a lot at DU has changed my mind about the serious need to get Dems back into the majority, but I still want to throw up my hands sometimes from the frustration of trying to truly CLEAN UP our government.

40. Tuned in to DU for the buzz too
Watergate brought about a lot of changes and rules in Congress because the entire country was disgusted with the corruption in the Nixon administration.
Something is really going to have to jell with the American people before there is a call to make the changes that are needed now.

I wonder if the religious right will see how they have been used by these people.

What did it for Watergate were televised hearings where the revelations were made directly to the American people. Maybe with a Democratic Congress we will get some charges and hearings - televised on network tv.

50. The Frontline About Afghanistan Is Chilling, Too...
I want to see Greenwald's film...I'm really hoping Sundance will air it before election day.

The Frontline deals with the resurgence of the Taliban and how Musharaf has sold us down the river. I sense Afghanistan will be the Cambodia to Iraq's Vietnam and we're getting closer to April, 1975 every day.

If there's one issue that does get Repugnicans to listen, it's the contractor issue. Many who support the war, don't support these mercenaries...and have litte clue as to who they are and what they do. When you show them the numbers in both contactors and the money wasted on them, even the biggest John Wayne is hard-pressed not to agree this is primarily a war for profit.

Excellent info.!! These Republicans are more sleazy than I ever imagined, and they're playing the Christian right for all they're worth. People's lives are like a big game to them, and no amount of money is ever enough. It seems it all started with the college Republicans and the era of Ronald Reagan and his "greed is okay" mantra.

56. oh my gosh, Robbien, welcome to the doll-house sometimes...
this is among my principle concerns; you'll see the boards LIGHT UP, and then crash over: Leopold/t r u t h o u t updates, rove conspiracies, diebold voting machines, PETA, will pitt story, article & trial balloons, 'what are we going to do ', Foley & the like threads for days & days, round & round...it can be a mystery to some, and a little sad to others perhaps, watching someone reaching for a bath towel with both eyes filled with shampoo bubbles...or sand, as someone stands beside eating a strawberry pop-tart with so internalized a sense of delicacy

when i see something along those lines occurring, i will come in here and drop several thread topics important to the world cause they are clearly out there, it really doesn't bother me in that it is more telling of 'the buzz' itself, but they have been known to sink like stones = whatever

posted a thread the other day in the midst of one such brouhaha/donnybrook that spoke to the existence of u.s. oil companies being in the Sudan; Darfur, and likely the source of many, many ongoing woes that speak in the clear support of the genocide that has been going on in the region for years now = 400,000 dead and the bush/bfee admin still turns a blind eye...blind eye...if it weren't so serious that would be funny...

but it just sat there for a day or so, till someone pointed out to me, a newbie, that i should not forget the "1,000 or 2,000 that died in Lebanon...", 1,000 or 2,000 dead in Lebanon, check = sure, sure...there are many things i will never forget

Moyer is tight every-time, i like him :hi:

58. thank you Mr. Moyers
Finally this thing makes sense. I read as much as I can and follow politics more than your average American and this thing confused the crap out of me.

Moyers helped me to understand the scandal in regular guy terms.

Once again - Bill Moyers calls it like it is!

59. Sigh.
I am more than exhausted, even after a whole night's sleep. Surprised at DU? Not anymore.

You are wondering why there are not more threads about some talking head on some tv show, and I am wondering why DU doesn't turn off the tv and talk about issues, or do something about issues. Threads that aren't about some tv show, some sex scandal, what empty rhetoric some public figure spouted, etc. are harder to find among the dross these days.

63. I watched this last night. This was the most comprehensive
piece I have seen on the Abramoff scandal. We knew that it ran deep, but this linked all the pieces together so you could follow the money.

64. I saw no heads up on this either - buried in the Foley mess
But it was outstanding.

Moyers was like an superb craftsman putting this show together.

65. Of those implicated
it looks like Boehner and Haster are due to fall. ... Following in the richly deserved shackled steps of DeLay, Nye and Cunningham. Anyone up for a pool?

Lots of suggestions but no smoking gun that Abramoff/DeLay shenanigans involved Chimpy as well. No surprise.

Take away message is that campaign finance reform is the only to stop the madness but it's not likely to happen, so the mug shots may change but the machine will keep humming along.

74. I too was bowled over by that statement especially after seeing
the vile extant of his amorality. It is beyond sickening.

75. Hey I posted a thread yesterday giving a heads up about the show.
And before finding this thread I was about to post a thread asking for people's responses to it.

I myself bowled over by it. I had had only a very surface knowledge about Abramoff and its gang of criminals, Moyers did a fantastic job about exposing the scandal in its entirety.

76. I watched it last night, and even though I thought that I'd kept up with
the Abramoff BRIBERY scandal, I still felt like someone had kicked me in the gut. I still can't get all of my thoughts together, and the discussion at the end didn't make me feel very hopeful for changes anytime soon.

Damn, those god-fearing, young repubs certainly got corrupted very early in life, eh?
