Truth about advertising: What you hear 1st sticks, esp if emotional impact |
|
For many people it doesn't matter if later they hear that what they heard first was wrong, 1st impression counts. This works for material goods and for political goods. If it hits you emotionally first, later intellectual corrections never quite make up, for many people anyway. This makes for an easy way to get products sold, and an easy way to never have media "corrections" get quite the impact.

In politics, it definitely is not about "getting the facts straight," "common sense," or "proving" anything. It's about convincing (folling, persuading, motivating) people to go along with what you say.
This is also why people find it hard to give up the things they learned when growing up. And it also is why it is good advice to note the first reports of events in the news. People like to say that the first reports are usually wrong, but I don't think that is true.
