Pedophile cover-up extends into the FBI

On July 21, 2006 Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW) sent complete and exact copies of several emails to the FBI. Both the former page's name and the person to whom the page forwarded Rep. Foley's emails were clearly visible.

After CREW sent the emails to the FBI, CREW's only subsequent contact with the Bureau was one telephone call from the special agent to whom CREW had sent the material confirming that the emails were from Rep. Foley. CREW had no further contact with the FBI. The FBI failed to investigate the matter further.

The FBI has given two different reasons for why they did not investigate the Foley letters from CREW:

FBI Excuse 1) The letters "did not rise to a level of criminal activity".

Reason 1 was immediately challenged because the letters should have caused a significant level of concern because of Foley's position and since Foley was clearly attempting to arrange a meeting with minors. Clearly appearing negligent in their duties, the FBI then gave a new reason:

FBI Excuse 2) Because the letters were "heavily redacted" and did not have adequate information.


Now CREW is demanding the DOJ investigate the FBI cover-up:

"WASHINGTON, Oct. 5 (CREW) wrote to the Department of Justice (DOJ) Inspector General's (I.G.) office today to ask for an investigation into why the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has fabricated and disseminated a cover-up story as to why it never investigated the Foley emails sent to it by CREW.

CBS News has reported that according to the FBI when CREW gave the Bureau the original set of emails from Rep. Mark Foley (news, bio, voting record) to a former House page, they were "heavily redacted." The FBI is also claiming that it came back to CREW and asked for more information so that it could follow up, but that CREW refused to provide anything further. Reporters from several other news organizations have repeated this allegation. The FBI is lying.

On Monday, October 2, CREW sent a letter to the DOJ I.G.'s office, attaching exact copies of the emails CREW had sent to the FBI on July 21, 2006. Both the former page's name and the person to whom the page forwarded Rep. Foley's emails were clearly visible."

It is partisan to the extreme that they would pick Freeh to investigate Pedogate. He is the perfect choice to obfuscate and bungle the investigation. Freeh contributed nearly $20,000 to Republicans, including President Bush, in 2004.

Freeh writes, “The problem was with Bill Clinton — the scandals and the rumored scandals, the incubating ones and the dying ones never ended. Whatever moral compass the president was consulting was leading him in the wrong direction. His closets were full of skeletons just waiting to burst out.”

The behaviour of the Bush Administration and the US Congress has for the past six years obscured the fact that the United States is home to millions of some of the world's brightest people. And this week, when the US is undergoing one of its intermittent spasms of moral outrage, makes it even harder to appreciate the real torments of a great people.

The paladins of the right, moving effortlessly from equivocation to outright lies, are trying desperately to extricate themselves from a self-made quagmire which is threatening to swallow whole the conservative revolution of Gingrich, Bush and Rove. It has not been an edifying spectacle. The political scene in the US has resembled a solfatara - a mud volcano - spitting steaming gobs of dark matter all over the pristine blueprints of the neocons and the flat-earthers.

What could not be accomplished by the revelations about 9/11, the disasters of Katrina, the unholy bloody mess of the Iraq war is being accomplished by virtual sex - sexual harassment in cyberspace. All of a sudden, all the sterling hypocrisies of the American right have turned to dross and the hunt is on for a scapegoat to deflect the astonished public examination of the entrails of an unfeeling, uncaring, neo-fascist corporate state.

Astounding and almost incredible facts have been reported unnoticed: 20 American soldiers have been killed in Iraq in the first five days of October; Congress has given itself nine pay rises in 11 years while refusing even one rise in the minimum wage since 1996. The average pay of CEOs of top corporations is rising 16 times as fast as the average American's pay; the icons of American manufacturing industry, General Motors and Ford, are unable to compete against Japanese cars made in the United States, and the stock market has made its second successive record level in a week while the housing market - one of the real engines of the US economy - is on the point of popping like an over-inflated balloon. Instead, the serious men and women of the American media are mesmerised by the story of a deflated hypocrite, Mark Foley, until this week the representative of one of the safest Republican seats in the US Congress. There was no such attention given to the meltdown of integrity represented by the indictment of the former majority leader, Mr DeLay,

If the e-mails were not redacted by CREW, but were redacted when the FBI investigators saw them, it sounds like there must be a process within the FBI whereby any matters involving Republican politicians first goes through a political bureau and a GOP Apparatchik for screening.
