Poll finds many would do anything necessary to avoid a military draft

MONTGOMERY, Ala. Would you go into the military if the United States reinstituted a draft? A lot of people in Alabama say no.

A new poll shows that about 35 percent of young Alabamians would try to avoid military service in the event of a draft.

The poll was conducted by the Press-Register newspaper in Mobile and the University of South Alabama. It found that 62 percent of young people say they would enlist before being drafted or accept having their number called.

But 20 percent say they would do anything necessary to avoid being drafted. And another 15 percent would pursue legal options to avoid military service.

1. Mark me down as one who would do anything to avoid the draft

for my grandsons. I'd personally drive them to Canada, rather than put them under the command of these clowns. This administration may think they are expendable, but I don't.

That is said by one who has had many service personnel in the family who spent time in WWII, Korea, Viet Nam and Iraq.

There is a time to say yes and a time to say enough.

62% joining sounds pretty high to me.
But anyways, I suppose that most don't want to appear as cowards when asked such a question.

11. I said this last night, I'll say it again

Staying the course is the worst thing Bush can do in practical terms about Iraq, but political calculus dictates that he continue to do so.

Any serious attempt to "win" in Iraq would involve imposing a draft and raising taxes. Both would be very unpopular moves and Bush does not have the political will to make unpopular moves. He would prefer to create the illusion that he's serious about defeating terrorists by shredding the Constitution and violating international humanitarian law.

His other alternative is to leave Iraq, which would "leave Iraq to the terrorists" (he says) and leave Iraq's resources to the Iraqis (which is what he really abhors).

How many soldiers and how much money would one expect to need to "win in Iraq?"

I really don't know the answer to that and am not convinced that any amount of money and soldiers we are prepared to expend would do the job and that is why I am asking.

I mean we are now fighting Iraqis who were 10 and 11 years old when Bush invaded. Pretty soon we are going to be fighting Iraqis who weren't even born yet when he invaded. In other words the Iraqis are multiplying. I just can't see anything we could ever put in a "win" column knowing that.

What you bring is a good reason to simply support withdrawal from Iraq.

However, just assuming for the sake of argument that winning in Iraq is possible, then "staying the course" isn't going to do it.

To make this point clear, I do not believe the war in Iraq can be won.
