Jim Talent, talking about "involuntary" pregnancy on MTP.
Edited on Sun Oct-08-06 11:19 AM by BleedingHeartPatriot
So, Timmy is really hammering this guy(repub Senator from MO) about his votes, positions on stem cells and, as an adjunct, the abortion issue.

So Timmy asks the repub about his inconsistency on believing that abortion should be allowed in the case of incest or rape, since he believes it's murder when casting stem cell votes.

Talent's reply: "Because those pregnancies are involuntary."

I've been letting this sink in, because the distinction is very telling.

I somehow think it's more about the sex being involuntary and tells me of a repub world view where a women having "voluntary" sex should be penalized in the event of an unplanned pregnancy.

Why the heck are these repubs so afraid of women controlling, and enjoying, their sexuality????!!!!????

1. That's it exactly
If they were anti-abortion, they'd be pro-birth control. They're anti-sex, plain and simple.

4. A brilliant summation from an Op Ed in the Boston Globe:.
The entire piece is superb. Here's the summation...

But what can one expect from denying grown men -- and women -- a normal, adult sex life? Whether the denial of adult intimacy comes from religious conviction or the ordinary urge toward conformity, people who run away from their sexuality nearly always have to answer to nature somehow. For people who fear abiding and mutual love, the trust and confusion of the young is a godsend. Add to that the perquisites of power, and a degenerate is born.

3. My guess on the subject...
...well, it is usually the old Repuke MEN who take positions like this. Seems to me, those who cannot get it up anymore are those who take some real punitive positions against those who NEVER had to worry about getting it up.

You know ~~ Those who can, do; those who can't yap about it.

5. A woman who knows what she wants and expects to get it
is a horrifying creature to rabbity males who are none too sure of their own sexuality. The idea that a woman can enjoy competent sex is terrifying because they know the women in their own lives have settled for far less. They therefore objectify such women as tramps, as sluts, as whores and set about despising them and trying to punish them.

What better way to destroy her enjoyment of her own sexuality than with forced childbirth?

7. Is that why forced abortions in the Mariana Islands are OK with Talent?
Does Talent not have a problem with forced abortions in the Mariana Islands, because they are involuntary since they are caused by forced prostitution that he and other members of the Abramoff 65 have enabled?

See
http://www.dailykos.com/story/2006/10/6/151223/489

Talent is named as one of the Abramoff 65; the connections with Abramoff include
1-Money, 4-the public record, and 6-Congressional favors.

Note that the Commonwealth of North Mariana Islands (CNMI) is a
permanent part of the U.S. The people of CNMI are U.S. citizens.

These underage girls who are being raped and physically abused are
- most importantly - human beings, and secondly, they are U.S. citizens!

13. I always wonder how Bush Pere, who called himself "pro-life"...
...granted most favored nation status to China, which forces women to have abortions. And the rethugs supporting Jack Abramoff and his regime of forced abortions is even more hypocritical.

It's about denying women sexual autonomy.

8. i agree, for all their crap about Dems not believing a fetus has rights
or whatever the fuck they always cry about.

they are the ones who DO claim to believe whatever a thing is before birth should be protected just as after birth. yet when it comes to rape they make an exception. but if a child is born as a result of rape nobody would say they should be killed.

i agree, it's almost never about protection of life. it's always about control of women.

9. As a woman with a daughter in college, I'm hypervigilant to these "tells"
when politicians try to make their arguments regarding abortion. (or, now, stem cells).

Usually, the repub politicos are allowed to spin without challenge, Today, surprisingly, Timmy really nailed the hyprocisy and the word "involuntary" popped out of Talent's mouth.

Apparently, when women actually "volunteer" for sex, all bets are off as far as an unexpected pregancy!

GOP party platform on women's rights, contraception and abortion:

"keep your legs closed, except as requested by your God fearing husband, don't use contraception, since sex isn't for your enjoyment anyway and then carry any conception, via said God fearing husband, to full term, regardless of any medical, emotional or mental health issues that could arise from said pregancy." 10. Dear Mr. Talent:
If a woman is using birth control and that birth control somehow FAILS, that's also involuntary pregnancy. Right? Right????

I thought so. F - - - ing hypocrites.

11. Of course. It's about sex, and it's about control. It's about bitterness
that "those" women are "getting away with spreading their legs" and going la-la-la off to the land of carefree, easy abortions. It never occurs to these numbnuts that it's not their body, it's not their choice, it's not their business.

And despite the weak, methinks-thou-doth-too-much protestations of some "pro-lifers", in my experience, they're horribly repressed when it comes to sex. They'll go, "Oh, I love sex".. but deep down they can't get off without feeling like Cartoon Jesus from sunday school is frowning upon them, or they think they're getting "wild" if they leave the lights on once in a while. (One need only look no further than Bill Falafel Fucker O'Reilly too see how weird and pathetic it is when a right-winger tries to get "nasty".) Judging by the 200 or so "pro-life" protesters I saw when I marched with 1.2 million other people for reproductive choice in DC in 2004, those folks generally looked like they hadn't had a satisfactory orgasm since, about, 1974.

And the GOP is all over the map with ideological inconsistency on this. As I've said elsewhere, the HLA plank of the GOP Platform as it has stood for decades, now, would grant rights under the 14th Amendment to fertilized eggs. And the major pro-life organizations in this country believe the BC pill causes abortions. They make no distinction between the pill and abortion. Criminalizing Birth Control IS part and parcel of the "pro-life" agenda. That's why, in a thread demanding moral consistency from the GOP, I wrote this, which I'll post in slightly modified form here again:

Because the HLA plank of the GOP platform demands that rights under the 14th Amendment be granted to fertilized eggs, and the major "pro-life" organizations in the USA make no distinction between the pill and surgical abortion, I think any member of the GOP that wishes to maintain ideological consistency, should immediately turn themselves or any family member into the authorities as a murderer or accessory to murder if they have:

A) Ever used the birth control pill

B) Helped fill a prescription for the BC pill, driven anyone to a pharmacy to get a BC pill prescription filled, or otherwise assisted in the obtaining of the birth control pill

C) Used or facilitated the obtaining of an IUD or any other device which might prevent the implantation of a fertilized egg

or

D) breastfed an infant or assisted anyone else in breastfeeding, behavior which releases identical hormones to the BC pill and as such is equally likely to result in the "murder" of a fertized egg.

...in an uproar.

They just can't stand the notion of someone "getting away with it".
