39. I was thinking the same thing, but...
What if that was the only basket we had?

It wouldn't surprise me if that was the one place in all of Iraq that we had that was secure enough for ammo storage.

Alternative theory, and possibly more likely... Halliburton or some such had the contract for ammo storage, and it was more profitable for them to keep it all in one spot.

: "You see, having multiple storage locations is thinking form the last war. In the modern era, you have to employ modern management techniques. In Iraq, we are utilizing JIT supply techniques ("Just In Time"). Having all the storage at one spot enables are network centric field managers... I mean "officers", to order just the exact amount of ammunition they need for that days battle. No extra ammo in the field means that units won't waste it by firing, increasing efficiency and cost savings!"

ugh... I feel dirty now... I need to take a shower after typing that.

11. I watched the 1st Cav ammo dump blow at Camp Evans,
Edited on Tue Oct-10-06 04:53 PM by Jackpine Radical
just south of the DMZ in 1968. It was extremely well stocked in anticipation of the assault on Khe Sanh, when the Cav went in to dig out the Marines who had been under seige there since Tet. That dump cooked off all night, and 4 underground storage tanks of helicopter fuel went up at random times during the night. 50,000 gallons apiece. I was sitting on a bunker watching the fireworks in the ammo dump. When the first fuel tank went, it billowed up into a mushroom cloud that I honestly thought was a nuclear explosion. "Oh Shit" I said to myself as I rolled backwards off the bunker. "I been nuked." I wondered how come I could still see and how long it would take my face to fall off. Later that night, word of the true nature of the explosion made the rounds & I felt a lot better.

It is completely un-precedented that an enemy would actually attack an ammo dump.

Why didn't Clinton secure the ammo dumps?

49. I was ten miles away when the Hercules Powder Plant in NJ blew-up in 1989
The first explosion was loud enough to wake all of us up.

It's a much different sort of sound than what you hear, say, when a truck hits a guard rail. Or when they're blasting at a construction site. You just know-- even though it's far away-- that it's HUGE.

My sister's first instinct, though panicked and scared, was to run to look out the window.

I got her to sit with me, tucked into a ball, with our backs against the wall, facing away from the window.

There were two more smaller explosions after that.

And then we all got dressed to go to my High School Graduation.

Oddly enough, there had also been an explosion there in 1940:

The damage appeared to have been contained within the base, the US spokesman said, although Iraqi officials said that shells "cooking off" in the fire had crashed down in five districts in the south of the city.

Bush is building up the Strait of Hormuz which will piss off Iran who in turn will go after our unarmed soldiers.

But my dark side says that Bush needs a catastrophic end to this because it will be his entrance into Iran and WWIII and martial law.
I have felt for a long time that they aren't being honest about the casualty numbers so here is his one big chance to pad them into one fiasco.

38. The explosions are rocking buildings miles & miles away...
imagine this night of terror that the children and families of Baghdad must be experiencing.

They said awhile ago that some of the falling ash and debris appears to be igniting blazes outside the perimeter of the ordnance fire.

I hope this damage is so devastating to the US forces that they have no other choice but to get their asses out of there!

But of course, all it probably means is that massive new orders for more missiles and bombs are hurriedly being called into our defense contractors who supply all that weaponry...speed-up the lines, boys, it's the Fourth of July and there are rockets to be sold.

End the Occupation, NOW!
