Kelly denies role in cover-up (NY 19th) . . .

Reports that a former page complained some five years ago about improper e-mails appeared to drop the "Pagegate" scandal directly into Rep. Sue Kelly's lap yesterday.

Rep. Jim Kolbe, an Arizona Republican who served on the Page Board with Kelly in 2000, released a statement yesterday saying about that time, a former page complained to him about receiving e-mails from then-Rep. Mark Foley that made him feel uncomfortable. Foley was forced to resign Sept. 29 after being confronted with sexually explicit e-mails he sent to underage male pages. Kolbe's comments yesterday put Foley's alleged improper advances much earlier than previously reported, about the period when Kelly, a six-term incumbent, was chairwoman of the Page Board.

The Katonah Republican angrily denied yesterday that anyone informed her about the complaint five or six years ago. Kolbe said he told Foley's office about it and reported it to then-House Clerk Jeff Trandahl.

(snip)

The Foley scandal and other negative GOP factors were among the issues cited yesterday by Congressional Quarterly in changing Kelly's race from "Republican favored" to "leans Republican."

1. This scandal says a great deal about who sides with powerful and who sides

and who sides with the powerless.

I think it's appropriate that Democrats get elected as a result of this scandal because it epitomizes everything that is wrong with Republicans even if it is very unexpected vehicle for understanding the relationship between power and powerlessness.

2. Have you seen any ads on tv for John at all? Kelly has two out.
One a hit piece on John and taxes, and the other about how "wonderful" she's been....

3. all I've seen so far are lawn signs . . .
but I imagine John's budget is considerably smaller than Kelly's, so he's probably saving the bucks for the last two weeks before the election . . . just a hunch, mind you . . .

4. Me too on seeing lawn signs. I live in a condo so I can't use one here. As
to the ads, I hope you're right. Kelly has a new one out, telling how she voted against the Repugs energy bill and how she serves in the interest of the Hudson Valley. I wanted to barf....
That one makes 3.

a four page, letter-size, full color flyer about health care . . . I assume it went to every voter in the district . . .

a good start, but needs to be followed by more print plus some tv stuff . . .

oh, yeah . . . I'm picking up my lawn signs this week . . .
