I'm getting ready to call this one. There's a couple new stories about terrorists who were tried & convicted in Pakistan on treason charges - maybe that's what the OP was referring to?

18. Sorry, still here...
You'll have to watch CNN, I guess. The literally interrupted another story and did a "THIS JUST IN" thing. The showed pics of the guy...apparently a poster above has info on him, but so far I only know what I've seen on CNN.

BTW, the guy is a Californian IN Pakistan...I stated that in my op.

16. Okay, so if it's treason to offer material support to terrorists
I guess it's safe to assume that all the people in Appalachia who were assisting or cheering Eric Rudolph on-- and the folks who sold Tim McVeigh his copy of The Turner Diaries-- can expect to be shipped off to Gitmo any day now. Right?

...Right?

20. Article Three of the constitution...
Edited on Wed Oct-11-06 12:05 PM by cynatnite
defines treason only as levying war against the United States or "in adhering to their Enemies, giving them Aid and Comfort," and requires the testimony of two witnesses to the same overt act or a confession in open court for conviction.

23. what about john walker lindh?
Edited on Wed Oct-11-06 12:06 PM by pitohui
i thought he was a traitor, i mean they put him in prison for 20 years for...something

if not treason, what?

what you describe in article three, is exactly what mr. lindh did as a matter of fact, he fought for the other team, the team that attacked us

so i don't know where they're getting no other treason in 50 years, smells like hype to me

24. I think this treason charge is strictly political...
There are many instances where someone could have been charged with treason, such as Lindh, but it was never done.

This is political, IMO.

35. Lindh was not charged with treason and for good reason.
Edited on Wed Oct-11-06 01:33 PM by endarkenment
We were not at war, he did not take up arms against us, and there were no witnesses to any overt action on his part. He stupidly plead to some other charge after being tortured and abused by our military.

"Complicating the prosecution was the nature of the confession. Photos emerged from Lindh's captivity of him being held naked and bound, wearing an obscenity-covered blindfold. When details of the conditions of his captivity began to emerge, it was discovered that he had initially been wounded and hidden for a week with limited food, water, and minimal sleep before being captured. After being captured and taken to a room with the only window blocked off, Lindh had his clothes cut off him and was duct-taped to a stretcher and placed in a metal shipping container for transportation. Lindh was not even released from the stretcher when he needed to urinate. Instead, guards propped him upright. When interrogated, he was denied a lawyer despite several requests, and was threatened with denial of medical aid if he didn't cooperate. It took more than a week in U. S. custody for his wound to be treated and the bullet removed.

The court scheduled an evidence suppression hearing, at which Walker would be able to testify about the details of the torture to which he was subjected. The government faced the problem that a key piece of evidence—Walker's confession—might be excluded from evidence as having been forced under duress. Furthermore, the hearing would turn a spotlight on the way that U.S. soldiers had conducted the interrogation.

To forestall this possibility, Michael Chertoff, the head of the criminal division of the Justice Department, directed the prosecutors to offer Walker a plea bargain: He would plead guilty to two charges — serving in the Taliban army and carrying weapons. He would also have to consent to a gag order that would prevent him from making any public statements on the matter for the duration of his twenty-year sentence, and he would have to drop claims that he had been mistreated or tortured by U.S. military personnel in Afghanistan and aboard two military ships during December 2001 and January 2002. In return, all the other charges would be dropped."

Who are the bad guys here? The treatment of Lindh was a war crime.

Sources say Gadahn indictment to be announced

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Federal officials will announce Wednesday the indictment of a California native who has acted as a spokesman for al Qaeda on charges of treason and offering material support for terrorism, two federal sources told CNN.

One of the sources said the indictment of Adam Yahiye Gadahn, 28, was to be returned in Los Angeles and will be announced at 4 p.m. in Washington by the Justice Department.

Asked last month about Gadahn's importance to the al Qaeda organization, FBI Director Robert Mueller told CNN, "It's significant in terms of his being a spokesperson for al Qaeda. ... I mean he has been on television. People have seen his face. It's going to be very difficult for him to become an operative. But he is a a contributor. He's certainly supporting al Qaeda and (is) somebody who we would very much like to arrest and prosecute." (Posted 12:45 p.m.)

25. *You're unAmerican if you don't support the President*

That's really the point they have been trying to make for oh so long.

They were able to pull it off for a little while but has passed its prime.

They will have to pull something else out of their bag of tricks, if they have any tricks left.

We don't know the facts. And if he was providing material support to al qaida, then he should be tried in a court of law just like any other American.

U.S. weighs first treason charges in over 50 years
Wed Oct 11, 2006 1:11 PM ET

By James Vicini

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A California-born convert to Islam could become the first American accused of treason since World War Two after he appeared in al Qaeda videos, sources familiar with the man's case said on Wednesday.

They said U.S. prosecutors were strongly considering bringing the charges, which carry a maximum punishment of death, against Adam Gadahn, 28, who is believed to be overseas and is not in U.S. custody.

The charges could come as early as Wednesday.

The U.S. Justice Department last brought treason charges, during the World War Two era, the sources said.

The Nazis took it one small step at a time. At first most Nazis were just normal German people, like most Americans today are just normal people.

Edit...People not getting fair trials out in the open, was the way the Germans started to be hauled away and never heard from again. Our people in congress need to read the things they sign on to.
