Just heard a BRILLIANT idea re: gay marriage, that'll really irk righties |
|
Okay, so it's only a compromise at this point, and not actually marriage, but I think the guy who just posted this might be on to something in the meantime...
Gay couples should just INCORPORATE. Under current US law, they'll have even more rights than the average straight citizens. And we know the right is very pro-business!
Whatcha think?

Sounds like a plan -- and might have an unintended consequence.
The RW could get so upset that they'll push to dismantle the doctrine of corporate personhood and knock the corporations down a few pegs, just like we want anyway! Of course, that would take at least a few years, during which time the gay partners get to enjoy all those corporate benefits as well as work to pass a gay marriage rights bill.

14. Gay marriage as a corporation, with the same bennies as corps. LOL |
|
Since sex is the only thing that effects these troglodytes, bring it to them.
Soapbox time- it's just another example of the fact that the society is insane. War, death, murder, manipulation are fodder for prime-time television, but you won't see a boobie, which might cause the end of civilization. Who cares how many die in and because of Iraq, and what will occur in response; can't let anyone different have a chance at having what makes them happy so long as it's outside of our comfort zone, even if it doesn't hurt us directly at all.
I'm for boobies on television, how about you?

If I "incorporate" with my partner:
I can make medical decesisons on her behalf I can file my federal and state personal taxes with her I can have legal rights over her children (and she over mine) My credit report and her credit report will reflect each others good and bad activity I will no longer have to file my house title with the relationship as 2 strangers?
I can register at macy's for our wedding party (just kidding I can already do that one. . .)

8. That still won't get a life partner into an ICU |
|
if a phobe family forbids it, nor will it give a surviving partner any control over funeral arrangements.
There is no substitute for marriage, which is essentially a contractural agreement by which a non relative is promoted to first degree relative status, in making many lifetime and end of life decisions.
Incorporating won't mean squat when it comes to child custody, either.

The life partner would be able to decide the course of treatment, or lack of it, but would not be allowed in the ICU without blood relative approval.
I know. I've had to sneak them in to see their partners in the wee hours of the morning after I've shooed the family out to get some rest.
And yes, I could have lost my job over it.
Blood relatives also oversee the funeral arrangements if they're intolerant of the life partner. That often means burial far away, excluding the life partner from all the arrangements and from the funeral, itself.

13. as for the funeral arrangements, |
|
i can say from experience that can be addressed in the will. my father's girlfriend (in name only) handled his arrangements per his will. his children had no input. but perhaps the laws in this state are different than in others.

Anybody can adopt anybody else. True, it doesn't make for an equal partnership, but an adoptee is family and entitled to the same rights as any family member.

10. Gay people get married all the time in every state. |
|
A woman who undergoes gender reassignment, gets a double mastectomy and takes a little testosterone, can marry any other woman she likes; with all her (no penis) girly parts intact.
Now, feed that to the fundies and watch their heads a'splode.
It's letting them get married without the benefit of a mastectomy that seems to be the problem. Why do fundies hate boobies on women and like them on men?

18. simplistic, and not really accurate |
|
Some states prohibit gender correction of a birth certificate, even after full gender reassignment surgery. Without correction of the birth certificate, no marriage.
Marriage aside, the inability to correct a birth certificate creates real problems for trans folk.

I echoed your assessment of "simplistic" and amplified it by providing additional information.
It was not clear from your post whether you knew that birth certificates cannot be corrected in a number of states. In most states two individuals with the same gender on their birth certificate cannot marry each other - even if physical appearance of the couple screams heterosexual. Even if you knew it, quite a few people don't know that this is a very real problem. - far beyond marriage issues. Try getting through airport security with a passport or driver's license which identifies you as female when you are sporting a male physique including a full beard, or a stay in a men's prison with a female body but an M on your birth certificate.
On another note, some chamomile tea or a good nap might soothe whatever is ruffling your feathers. :)

11. That's what they have been doing |

but problems still creep up. It will not help you in the hospital when only "family" can choose treatment. There is something about how if 1 of the 2 shareholders dies the family of dead shareholder may still get the assets.
