The Real "Axis of Evil" (through a 10 year old vegetarian's eyes)
Today we went to my son's parent-teacher conference; he's in 5th grade. His teacher showed us an assignment he was given to write what he would do if he found a Magic Wand.

First, he would "get rid of McDonalds, Burger King, Jack-in-Box and the rest of the Axis of Evil." Then he would give "migrant farm workers, employees of WalMart and all homeless people better lives." Next he would "kick the Bush Administration out." After all that, he would "get an awesome surfboard and go surfing in Mexico."

That's my boy!

2. Now how do you know the Dali Lama doesn't surf?
The ocean is a very spiritual place...

12. You have a point there, but the surf in Tibet has never been all
...that great. However, now that the Dali Lama lives in California recreation outlets may have changed. Still, I just can't imagine how a Buddha chant might sound in a surf tunnel unless it is this:

3. ...and what is so uncool about surfing in Mexico?
That kid rocks! I've been surfing in Mexico and it's fun....La Fonda! (Actually I just watched the people I went with, sitting in the van on a cold morning with a cup of java)

11. Nice rolling waves, must be awesome when high.

4. A fine young man.
I wondered if Mom allows him to DU (after he does his
homework, of course). But on second thought some of the posts
are pretty raw for a ten year old. How about a DU just for
kids?

It's wonderful to see someone so young have such compassion for people, animals and the environment.

8. Thank God Magic Wands Aren't Real.
I'll fight with all I have in me for my Burger King.

I do find it a bit disturbing that getting rid of Burger King took priority over giving homeless people better lives, but then I realized that he is, after all, only 10.

10. To my 10 year old it is
And it's as much about what those fast food joints do to the environment and our bodies as it is about the meat itself.

17. Not to mention what they do to the workers
Read "Fast Food Nation" by Eric Schlosser. After I read that, eating meat became even less appetizing. I went veg a few months later.

21. He loved it
He loved riding his skateboard through Golden Gate park, and he loved seeing Steve Earle. It's now officially a tradition for us to do this every year (this was our 3rd year), and I hope we're still going together when he's 20.

22. I'm a Democrat, his dad's a Republican
So he probably gets a little of both. Okay, that's not true; I talk to him a lot more about issues, mostly because my husband is a very passive Republican who thinks Bush is a moron and is pretty ambivalent about all but a few issues.

So sure he's influenced by me, he hears a lot of protest rock in the car and if he asks how I feel about an issue I will tell him flat out, but I'm careful to also tell him what the opposing viewpoint is, so he can practice critical thinking skills.
