Missouri? Can Macaca have another VA meltdown? Still just a bit too close for me, and eminently Diebold-able....which makes me very nervous.

Wished I lived in Tenn or Ohio - Ford just kicked Corker's butt in the last debate. Can't wait till 08' - Liddy wasted space Dole is up - she's the chair of the National Republican Senatorial Committee and when the Dems take over, there will be some people thrown under the bus....

5. Looking red. Sigh.
I'm working, I swear I'm working. Phone banks, donations, walking, registrations. THe polls still don't look good, though. I blame the Nevada state party; let's just say that "organization" isn't their strong suit.

10. Oh, most of 'em are around
A couple I've seen working w/ the Governor's race, one I've seen working w/ a county commisioner, another one I've heard is working in the Senate race.

We don't have things like precinct leaders for the party, only for individual campaigns, and there doesn't appear to be much coordination between party candidates, only individual campaigns.

I think the greassroots is there (collective noun), but there seems to be no leadership, at least not like in other, more successful states.

Thanks for the thought, though -- I'm not normally so negative.

9. Oh Fair New Mexico
"I love I love you so..."

I have a feeling NM's going to go blue and stay that way for quite a while. Maybe even keep getting bluer.

15. I live in Albuquerque - VERY blue here
The Republican Party is desperate - mailing out enough anti-Madrid literature to have saved an entire rain forest. They sent me this piece of crap in the mail telling me how liberal Pat Madrid is and how dangerous she is for New Mexico:

"How much will it cost you if LIBERAL Patsy Madrid is elected to Congress?" it asks.

It continues, (front page)

"PATSY MADRID HASN'T DONE HER HOMEWORK. Madrid says she'll vote to repeal the recent tax cuts. She calls them 'tax cuts for the rich'. That may be what the national LIBERAL leaders want Madrid to say about tax cuts - BUT HERE'S THE REALITY."

Flip tract over, and it continues, (back page)

"318,000 low-income New Mexico workers currently pay NO federal taxes. Thousands of them COULD (my caps) suddenly have a tax bill again under Madrid's tax plan. 17 million seniors nationally will pay an average $2034 more per year in federal taxes. MADRID'S $880 BILLION TAX INCREASE WILL HIT NEW MEXICO IN THE WALLET!!!"

(Inserted photo of Mexican-American forklifter working) "642,000 New Mexicans will see an average $1716 annual tax increase."

(Inserted photo of friendly white 'we're Native Albuquerqueans' aging Boomer couple arm in arm in front of their sunny house, looking nice but worried) "183,000 married couples in New Mexico will see an average $2726 annual tax increase."

(Insert photo of very Republican-looking white family with toddler and baby, smiling in living room) "171000 couples with children will see an average $2084 annual tax increase." (No designer Gap sippy cups this year, I guess)

(Insert photo of white female senior) "121000 New Mexicans will pay THOUSANDS (their caps) more just for investing in their future."

"Asked whether tax increases across the income spectrum would be considered, Rep. Charles Rangel, a Madrid supporter, replied, NO QUESTION ABOUT IT." "PATSY MADRID IN CONGRESS?" (Note Cavuto "?")

I, a liberal Socialist, got this in the mail today and read it laughing. I then put on a very straight face, cleared my throat, and telephoned the Albuquerque Republican Party's headquarters. A woman answered. I sounded very surprised and outraged, and told her I had received the Republicans' tract about Madrid in the mail today, and that I was very surprised at what I'd read. The woman on the line sounded gratified. Then I mentioned that Madrid, according to them, wanted tax cuts for the rich. How shocking! The woman sounded happy again.

Then I dropped the punchline:

"Thank you for letting me know these things, because I'm a liberal, and without you mailing me this I wouldn't have known this about Patsy Madrid. I am now going to vote for her. Thank you!"

The woman on the line sputtered and sounded like I'd slugged her with my fist in the chest. I hung up and laughed all the way to dinner in Nob Hill.

New Mexico is bluer than blue. Richardson is worshipped here. Fear not for New Mexico. WE ARE LIBERAL AND DEMOCRAT FOREVER! Seriously, try to find a W bumper-sticker here! Just TRY! Most cars on the road STILL wear a Kerry/Edwards sticker! Viva New Mexico!

16. Thanks for telling me about that.
I'm so glad you called their headquarters! That's hilarious. And that flyer does indeed reek of desperation.

What stands out to me immediately is their second paragraph:

"318,000 low-income New Mexico workers currently pay NO federal taxes. Thousands of them COULD (my caps) suddenly have a tax bill again under Madrid's tax plan. 17 million seniors nationally will pay an average $2034 more per year in federal taxes. MADRID'S $880 BILLION TAX INCREASE WILL HIT NEW MEXICO IN THE WALLET!!!"

Notice how they limit their description of those who COULD pay taxes to simply "thousands" and don't indicate how much this tax bill could be. Then when they suddenly switch to "seniors," (notice, not "low-income seniors," they rely on national figures.

Throughout the remainder of their claims, it seems as though they've tried to correlate those who would face a tax increase with the low-income individuals they've dubiously claimed will suffer at the opening of their spiel. Their claim is that they're countering Madrid's claim that the tax increases (or repealing of cuts) will be for the rich; if this were so, why wouldn't they be able to provide some income info on all these New Mexicans who might see more tax money due? It's much more likely that all these are INDEED "the rich," just as Madrid claims.

Sadly, most people won't take the time to break down the argument in such a way; on the other hand, I'm guessing most of those fliers will make it to the circular file before they're even opened, let alone read through.

I can't WAIT to get back to my home state. I'll be moving to an area with a pretty red population, but in Las Cruces, which is a good mix and which I suspect is going ever-bluer. I really think NM has a lot of potential--we just slipped a little for a few years, that's all. :)
