Bono Southern California Lawmaker with Closest Ties to Foley
Yesterday she said they barely knew each other, today she admits counseling him on coming out.

PALM SPRINGS - The fallout from the Mark Foley scandal and cover-up continues to spread. Southern California lawmaker Mary Bono (R – Palm Springs) reported donating a contribution she received from Foley to a charity and appears to continue to distance herself from the disgraced lawmaker. However, news media across the country have detailed a long relationship dating back to Sonny Bono’s career in Congress before he died in 1998. Despite detailed public evidence to the contrary, Bono’s spokesperson first reported that Bono had no personal ties to Foley and “did not know whether Foley and her late husband were friends.” Next, Ms. Bono stated “I don’t know how to say whether I was or was not friends with somebody and nor could she “recall the circumstances of selling a Jeep Wrangler she owned to Foley in 1998.” A photo of the Jeep in question was on the front page of the New York Times.

As the story unfolds, it seems Bono concedes closer ties than originally admitted. Foley and Mary Bono’s work for the entertainment industry often brought them together to attend the same events and work on some of the same causes – often with singers and other celebrities. As recently as September 6, they were both in attendance at a Capitol Hill function where Kelly Clarkson joined with lawmakers to speak out against piracy.

On April 19, 2004, they appeared in Nashville together to announce the landmark formation of the Recording Arts and Sciences Congressional Caucus with GRAMMY(R)-winning recording artist Clint Black. In April of 2004, they attended an event together for the Creative Coalition with many Hollywood stars present. In May of 2001 they attended a performance of Alicia Keys on Capitol Hill when the Canon Caucus Room was turned into a nightclub.
