Hawaii’s two Democratic congressmen were not among the 29 U.S. Representatives who sent a letter to Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice asking her to deny the extradition of Duane “Dog” Chapman to Mexico, where he faces charges of illegal detention and conspiracy.

Reps. Ed Case and Neil Abercrombie, both Democrats, said they were not asked to join in the appeal that Dave Helfert, spokesman for Abercrombie described as “partisan effort” and signed by only Republicans.

“Nobody asked us,” Helfert said.

Chapman, who is the star of the popular TV show “Dog The Bounty Hunter,” was arrested at his Portlock residence Sept. 14 along with two of his co-stars after his capture of fugitive convicted rapist Andrew Luster, the Max Factor heir, on June 18, 2003, in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.

Chapman was released on $300,000 bail the next day. He must attend extradition hearings to face trial in Mexico, where bounty hunting is considered a crime.

“It seems that Mexican authorities are pressing this case only because they are so stung by the embarrassment of failing where Mr. Chapman succeeded,” Colorado Rep. Tom Tancredo, chairman of the Congressional Immigration Reform Caucus, said in the Sept. 26 letter signed by 28 other congressmen.

3. Capturing Luster was a good thing

But he broke the laws of Mexico doing it, and as he always seems to pontificate in his show, he must now accept resposibility for his actions.

Besides, I don't really believe that he did it for the sake of women, I think he did it because it would bring him a measure of fame and recognition.

Bail Enforcement is Illegal in Mexico:

Since Mexico does not recognize our bail system, the ability of the
bondsman to confer the authority to arrest his principal and the fact that
there are many different international and country-specific laws affecting
the apprehension and extradition of fugitives it is generally not legal to
go to Mexico to apprehend fugitives. MANY bounty hunters have been arrested
and jailed for long periods of time attempting unauthorized extraditions
(AKA Kidnapping).

There is a correct way to do it, which is not terribly difficult; we
do it often in Mexico but we always follow accepted guidelines which
normally involves established law enforcement officials on both sides of
the border and never a covert action.

Now it's been stated that Dog was being escorted by a Mexican Police officer, but when they brought Luster in the officer "disappeared". Now were any US law enforcement officials notified by Dog?

5. Mixed Feelings

Dog and his litter are really a PITA in Hawaii and they real do think they are special. He alone is almost tolerable but his swaggering posse are really the pits. Seeing him take a hit of some sort some how seems karmic.

However Mexico legal system is a quagmire in its own right. Can't seem to find anyone the US wants for serious crimes, esp if they are a Mexican national. That includes rape and murder. Turning anyone over to them seems a bad idea until they clean up their act somewhat.

Then there was the similar case I have heard about (no links sorry) only with Canada, and we turned the bounty hunter over without pause.

All in all I just wish he would go away.

8. Not really

They are a TV show these days, not really much of a bonding company. The TV crews are a real PITA to the neighbors and disrupt wherever they go. Its like the old days when they were filming Hawaii 5-0 only worse. At least the Lost crew keep it out of downtown.

I watched another local really dis one of the posse. The guy flipped out, when the rest of us laughed at him, it got worse. Finally one of the minders got him out of there. You never know who you will see at Zippys...

Since it was not a legitimate arrest by proper authorities it is just kidnapping for hire. Republicans have no problem with this and I know they feel Democrats would have a problem although I don't think they would go along with extradition but it should be a crime in the USA to kidnap foreign personel.

We bash * all the time for breaking laws and yet when someone does it for"the right reasons" we should give them a pass? In Mexico bounty hunting is illegal. He broke the law. He is going to court to face alleged crime. He SHOULD NOT receive a free pass.
