These people are vicious, hateful monsters
I'm watching Oprah and she told some of the awful things Bush supporters said to her in letters. One told her she should "choke of the ashes of 9/11" and "Take you hairy black ass back to Africa". All because she's asking questions about the war.

Well, one good thing to come out of such things: The bigger the star the mouthbreathers attack, the more widespread the coverage of their bilious vitriol. And there aren't many bigger, more powerful stars than Oprah.

Sorry she had to be the victim of this filth, but glad she exposed it.

36. Well, actually, there is a way...
...of telling them exactly where to go back to -- but "the old country" might not be the one they think it is.

Here's something I wrote earlier this year in a thread about the color of Jesus' skin:
Some time back...

Newsweek did a feature on the recent fad of paying private companies to have one's DNA traced back to its continental origins -- and told of a few families, black and white, who discovered they were related... as well as the mindset-jarring revelations of a couple of people who found out they weren't at all what they grew up thinking they were (a "black" man who learned he had no known African DNA at all, but a combination of Native American and Middle Eastern), and how this made them question their ties to the culture(s) in which they were raised.

Inasmuch as I detest the idea of anyone's DNA floating around and available for potentially nefarious uses, when I read this I fantasized about forcing every white supremacist in the world to undergo DNA analysis. Just imagine the repercussions of a few White Stormfront types realizing they're kissin' cousins with Huey Newton.
I wish someone would commission a study on the heritage of committed racists, much like the studies that have shown that the biggest homophobes are the ones most inclined toward sexual arousal when exposed to gay porn. I would guess that the two groups (racists and homophobes) share in common the fear that they might actually be one of them.

Even the Irish were considered "colored" at one time.

DAMMIT why aren't more people outraged? Oprah's not. If I got mail saying that shit-it would make me do a hundred more shows on Iraq. And how many has she done? And you can bet-whomever is in charge-is it Oprah? sure as shit wasn't encouraging any more shows like that.

Oprah had that general on to tell off the pink ladies who protested against the war back in 2003. That's when I stopped watching her show, when she let Dr. Phil and that knuckle-dragging general berate those poor women, telling them they are giving aide and comfort to the enemy by questioning the pretzeldent.
She drank the koolaid for awhile.

When did that happen? I seem to recall that she used to do that years and years ago (back when Phil still had his show) but it's been out of fashion for a long time now. I haven't watched her for years because I find on-air therapy to be boring. Good for her if she is finally starting to speak out though.

That's shitty stuff and she certainly does not deserve it. It might help her better understand who these "people" are who resolutely stand by bush and his ilk. But frankly, Oprah has a rawther large karmic debt to pay.

Whether you like it or not, she is the "mother" of such fiendish filth as o'lielly, limbaugh, vanity, geraldo, jerry springer (TV-wise), michael savageweiner, coultergeist, laura ingraham, and all the rest of the media knuckledraggers. Back in the day, all there was - was Phil Donahue. He did a very respectable, elegant (if a little staid), polite show, about issues mainly. And there was always a serious, respectful, quite grown-up discussion. SOMETIMES he'd veer off a little and do an hour with a guest celeb. But it was always good, interesting, and informative. You ALWAYS learned something about those issues from Phil's examination of them - at length - for the whole hour. And for a long time, he had the whole business to himself. No competition.

But then came Oprah. She was the first person to take direct aim at Donahue and challenge his claim to the throne. She came pretty much out of nowhere (except for local Chicago TV news viewers) and went head-to-head against him. So you had these two shows emanating from Chicago, and set up the same. She adopted his previously unique format - the host roaming through the audience with a portable microphone. She added more hugs and shoulder squeezes and girl stuff. But to make her mark - and a big splash, attract attention (and ratings), and beat Phil at his own game, she went much farther. She amped up the subject matter, too. Turned up the volume literally and figuratively so her show would attract more attention, make more noise - what we in radio used to describe as "I can't believe what I just heard on the radio!" TV in this case. More hysteria. More maudlin, tawdry, tabloid-type, low-brow crap, more "lesbian nuns!", more lurid abuse and rape and pillage and molestation stuff. More sturm und drang - to set herself apart and to yank all the attention away from Phil. Phil was truly huge on the TV landscape. I mean, who else was there - Tom Snyder? Mike Douglas? Dinah Shore? Oprah set this bomb off in order to establish her show and herself as THE talk show host to beat, and to serve notice to Phil to MOVE OVER. She also, of course, broke the glass ceiling for women to start hosting these shows, and certainly women (and men) of color. Before her, there were certainly no Montel Williamses. But that's how it started. Soon enough, Phil found that his ratings were slumping because Oprah was taking them, and he started trying to fight back at the new, lower level. One "fine" day - probably the death knell for his previously respectable show - he did an entire hour wearing a skirt. The day Phil Donahue would EVER feel compelled to stoop to something so crass - well, it came. That's what he and his producers felt forced to do to try to salvage the show. But by then, Oprah was a steamroller and it left Phil looking pathetic. Eventually he gave up and bowed out, taking what was left of a civil tone in talk shows with him - not to mention what little was left of his dignity. Barnum and Bailey suddenly ruled the day. Which paved the way for the rest of the circus clowns like geraldo and the rest. You would not have seen a "geraldo" show with our host allowing opposing sides to erupt into actual flying fists and flying chairs - one of which hit geraldo in the face and broke his nose right there on the air. You would not have seen a subsequent show in which we watched geraldo get a fat transplant from his butt to his face. ON THE AIR. And all that started when Oprah came on the scene and decided to kick things up a notch.

Look, Oprah has many positives to her credit. And she's certainly done a lot of good, and she's shone many a light on subjects that needed to be looked at more closely. A terrific role model for women everywhere, and people of color who admire her for good reasons. But DAMMIT, I wish she'd have spent her tremendous clout doing more than being a female Monty Hall or Elvis giving away Cadillacs and shopping sprees. She could have done the ultimate good - shining a light on what's gone on in the bush White House, the corruption, the scandals, the lies, the stolen elections, the war, the character assassinationa and dirty tricks and shredding of the Constitution. People DO listen to her and pay attention, and she was uniquely positioned throughout this miserable regime to be able to tell the truth to the masses - many multitudes of whom believed bush was indeed anointed by God. They watch her, too. She could have singlehandedly saved this nation - and HOW MANY LIVES that have been squandered by now in Iraq? Someone with a pulpit such as hers, I think, has an even heavier responsibility to the nation, BECAUSE of the influence she wields.

I hope to God she starts doing more shows like this - where the truth is exposed about the war and the shit that's gone on. Because people DO listen to her and take her seriously. I've heard friends who are huge fans of hers talk about how she aims to remain apolitical because she can talk to everybody, otherwise she'd polarize and alienate half her audience. Besides, they say, that's not the point. But I disagree. By now, we need our media and cultural giants to help pull us out of this miasma - because they're uniquely positioned to have an impact. In our house, we have a saying: Much Blessed, Much Obligated. I think Oprah owes it to the people who flocked to her and made her so rich and famous and powerful. She owes it to this country and everyone who's been so hurt by this regime (ESPECIALLY since she works so hard, otherwise, to champion the have nots) to take a stand and, okay, YES - to get political. I hope she starts doing more, because she is capable of moving mountains, AND she really can't be hurt by any of the bad guys who'd sling mud at her - none of it would stick. She's WAY out of range of any of them. She could truly, and almost singlehandedly, save this country. GAWD, just imagine what could be accomplished if she teamed up with Gore and REALLY got busy...

28. Great post calimary.
Being a lifelong Chicagoan and having watched Oprah since she arrived, you've summed up the way I feel about her perfectly.

I used to watch and/or tape her show religiously, but when she started with all the tabloid BS, I get fed up and turned her show off.

I watched the re-run of today's show earlier tonight because I thought maybe, just maybe, she had finally gotten disgusted enough with Bushco, but alas once again I was disappointed.

When she said she thought Bunnypants was "uninformed" about Katrina, I was like WTF???

Hell, I'm a 52 year old housewife and when I saw what was sitting out in the Gulf of Mexico on our local weather forecast in Chicago the Friday night before Katrina made landfall, I knew wherever that monster came ashore, there would be catastrophic damage.

I just shake my head and wonder what will it take for the American people to wake up and realize they've been sold a "bill of goods" for the past six years.

I'm hoping and praying that come Nov. 8th, I'll be able to finally begin to see the proverbial light at the end of the tunnel, but with this cabal in Washington, DC, nothing, absolutely nothing would surprise me.

31. I guess everyone has their own take on the Oprah/Donahue thing.
Edited on Fri Oct-13-06 02:19 AM by nicknameless
I felt like Oprah was really in her element just talking to people -- especially women. She was such a natural at it, and the feel of her show had a warmth to it.

Donahue knew he had to do something to save his show, and IMO, he went the wrong direction with it. He became very self-conscious and grandstanding, and the show took on an uncomfortability it hadn’t had before.

Some of Oprah’s topics could be a bit salacious, but then the Ricki Lakes came along and the genre went over the edge. No topic seemed to be too tacky or too tawdry for these hosts. Geraldo, Jerry Springer, et al pushed the envelope even further.

Oprah’s run-in with the beef industry of Texas seemed to make her think twice before uttering anything approaching a political opinion ... IF that opinion wasn’t right wing. She made nice with * before the 2000 election, and some said that his appearance was edited to make him look better than he actually was.

Add to that her showcasing of Thomas Friedman, Herr Gropenfuhrer, and apparently guests who slammed Code Pink. She, like Leno, chose a side. Both took the coward’s way out in an effort to maintain their audience and avoid any trouble with the cabal.

I hope she’s ready to change her ways.

Aside: Remember Virginia Graham with the huge weird hair? She had a few talk shows around the 1950s - 1970s.
Perhaps there was no hugging of the audience members, but kind of fun celebrity chat.

the earlier post here.

Did you ever see the show where she had Cheech and Chong on as guests? She obviously did not realize who or what they were. They presented her with a roach clip as a gift, on the air. She thanked them, and broke for commercial, and it was clear that she wasn't quite hip to what it was that they had just given her. When she came back after the commercial break, they were GONE! And she went on as though they'd never even existed! A GREAT moment in TV!

My late father used to take a time-out every weekday afternoon to stretch out on the bed and watch Donahue. Sometimes I'd watch with him. I found it a really interesting, educational show. Not much in the pizzazz department, but that's not what you watched Donahue to see. I miss that. And I remember being shocked to see him doing that show in the skirt. I thought it was the beginning of the end.

I would LOVE to see Oprah go to town on the injustices and sins committed by this regime. She'd be such a mighty, overwhelming force for good, if she'd only steer her power and energy that way. I meant what I said. Oprah could singlehandedly save this country if she chose to.

That's hilarious. I guess some of the program's crew recognized the roach clip. :D

I'd love to see Oprah get some guts too. She can be a very persuasive force.
But I believe she knows what she's up against. She went through the slap suit with the Texas beef idiots.
She has seen what the rethugs did to Martha Stewart. Would she be willing to stick her neck out and risk bushco's wrath?
While I'd love to see it, I have my doubts that she'd do it.

40. Great post... Phil Donahue went so low as to start putting
strippers, nudity, paternity, and other stuff on his show that got the attention of a religious dentist in the Fort Worth Texas area who started a boycott of Phil, which rolled out big time with the "family values" message and kids coming home from school and watching garbage. The dentist made some good points about how the show had gone downhill, but there was too much preachiness and censorship involved for my tastes ("keep the damn tv off if you don't like it!")

I'm sorry Oprah is getting hate mail, but she entered the world of politics where right-wingers feel no hesitancy or remorse in saying the ugliest things to hurt people and try to instill fear.

I certainly agree that she has a lot to answer for.

Oprah said she had Ahhnold on because she was such good friends with Maria.
During the campaign for governor, so much dirt came out about the groper, I lost any respect I ever had for Maria.
I'd think that, as a friend of Maria's, Oprah should have considered doing an intervention for her ... instead of an hour long commercial for that creep.
