Help! I need some facts... fast
Edited on Fri Oct-13-06 08:17 AM by Tesha
Our local newspaper (http://nashuatelegraph.com) has for some time had a very slanted chief political writer: Kevin Landrigan. Worse yet, he appears to be lazy and uninformed as well.

http://www.nashuatelegraph.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20061013/NEWS02/110130212

Today Kevin has a "news article" (not opinion piece, link above) claiming that some recent remarks by Charlie Bass (the NH CD2 Republican incumbent) that were generally unkind to our nearby Democrats were simply said in jest. But the real insult of this story is how Landrigan quotes Bass as saying “Five congressmen have gone to jail, four of them were Democrats, and they got two more on deck – Jefferson and Mollohan. We’ve got one, by the way, so we’re still ahead,” Bass said.

Landrigan then goes on to say, "The one Republican is Florida Rep. Mark Foley who quit Sept. 29 after reports he sent sexually explicit e-mails to teenagers’ pages."! Of course Bass is wrong, wrong, wrong: Foley is just a nasty screwed up a** so far and not (yet) a convicted felon. But meanwhile Bob Ney has signed a plea agreement and is (I think) to be sentenced today. And Randy Cunningham is cosey in his prison cell, right?

But I need more names: Which Republicans have served jail time since (say) 1994? And don't we still have some of biggies like Delay (apt name!) sill being dragged through the courts?

Please help!

Tesha

1. Here's the GOP Auction House to get you started
Edited on Fri Oct-13-06 08:52 AM by Lasher
Since you seem to be in a hurry I'll load you up with this and see what else I can find.

http://www.dccc.org/gopauctionhouse/main.html

Edit: Here's another good resource.

http://www.liberalslikechrist.org/about/gopcorruption.html

But wait, there's more:

http://www.dkosopedia.com/wiki/Examples_of_Republican_hypocrisy_on_moral_values

Good scoop here, contrasts Democratic leadership's responsible handling of Jefferson & Mollohan scandals with GOP whitewashing & changing the rules to accommodate crooked Republicans. Mollohan has been removed from ranking member of the House Ethics committee.

I just noticed in your edit that you are attempting to frame the discussion around convictions and indictments. That's good.

Hit the GOP Auction House link first. Very good quick overview and you can click on icons for more scoop.

4. Even if it WERE true, (and they have a proven track record of lying),
Edited on Fri Oct-13-06 08:29 AM by pnorman
the REAL question is this: "WHICH major political party has done everything possible, to portray itself as "The guardian of traditional Christian American values"? Foley was merely a random seed that just happened to land in the soil, that had been cultivated so DILIGENTLY by the whackos that have taken over the Republican Party. That drives them INSANE!! (Time out for some recreational schadenfreude).

6. Scooter Libby indicted in Plamegate
Edited on Fri Oct-13-06 09:12 AM by Lasher
And the Bush administration's top federal procurement official was arrested, accused of lying and obstructing a criminal investigation into Republican lobbyist Jack Abramoff's dealings with the federal government.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2005/09/19/AR2005091901859.html

On June 20, 2006, Safavian was found guilty by a jury in federal court on four of five felony charges.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Safavian#Indictment.2C_trial.2C_.26_conviction

Sentencing is set for October 27. Lots of news stories on this today, here's a clip from one:

Prosecutors are recommending that former Bush administration procurement official David Safavian serve between 2½ and three years in jail for obstructing justice and making false statements about his relationship with convicted lobbyist and friend Jack Abramoff.

8. thanks!
My letter is off to the editor, news desk and the ombudsman. Thank you for all the tips. Will it make a difference? Will they print it? Naaa, but it feels good to have the facts to back up my complaint.

I really learned a lot, more than I ever would have guessed - man, Republicans are a messed up bunch of %#@*%, aren't they?
