Why Can't We Have A Contract For America? |
|
Edited on Tue Oct-17-06 04:54 AM by DemocratSinceBirth
The Republicans had their Contract (On) America in 1994. Why can't we have a Contract For America in 2006?
I'll start...
Adult Democratic members of the House and Senate will refrain from having sex with those who have not reached the age of majority.
Democratic leaders in Congress will not look the other way when one of their own is involved in unethical conduct even if he's willing to write a $100,000.00 check to the DNC.

3. Yes, a simple promise to abide by the |
|
constitution would be a good starting place.

5. NO NO NO NO A THOUSAND TIMES NO! |

I realize your post is half tongue-in-cheek, but the "Contract With America" crap comes up fairly regularly here, and I think it's important to smack it down whenever it does. The "Contract with America" is the REPUBLICAN's.
That is a purely, 100% REPUBLICAN idea. It is pure lunacy to come up with anything even remotely relating to "a Contract With/On/For/To/Under/Whatever America." Why adopt the basic idea of Newt Gingrich and the defining point of "The Reagan Revolution" and ape the very centerpiece that helped get us to this mess? If I was a GOP talking head, I'd be pointing that out faster than you can say "Clinton's fault!"
"Why, can't you see Mr. Russert, the Democrats have no new ideas! They have to reach back to the Golden Years of the GOP for their ideas, they've got nothing new!'
ANYTHING that hints of "Contract With America" is simply advertising through implication that the Republicans really did have the good ideas, and we just want to copy them.
PLEASE -- let's be creative and come up with ideas of our own.

7. Too late in the election cycle in my view |
|
First, the value is in nationalizing the election ush and FOley have already done that. Second, It would appear gimmicky Third, If we can have an honest moment. Dems as a group do not want an action plan that they have to be accountable for. We are not as organized as the GOP. ANd the GOP would watch for every failed issue and ramp up the rhetoric in '08 Fourth, Dems have skeletons as well... and it is impossible to control excesses effectively.
I appreciate the value statememt...but I think it it unnecessary

I think we Dems agree on some core principles...
Pro choice... Pro affirmative action... Pro enfranchisement for everyone... A healthy respect and concern for the little guy... After that many of us go our own separate ways from the center-left to much further left...
