The verbal sparring between two candidates for Wyoming's lone U.S. House seat didn't end when the televised debate ended Sunday evening.

Immediately after the lights and cameras shut down, incumbent Republican U.S. Rep. Barbara Cubin walked to Libertarian candidate Thomas Rankin, who had criticized her for receiving contributions from former House Speaker Tom Delay, R-Texas.

"'If you weren't sitting in that chair, I'd slap you across the face,'" Cubin told Rankin, he said Monday.

Rankin, who has used a wheelchair since 1999, said Cubin told him that if he had not been in a wheelchair she would have slapped him in the face in response to Rankin’s criticism of Cubin’s decision to accept donations from a political action committee connected with former House Majority Leader Tom DeLay of Texas. DeLay is under indictment for conspiracy and money laundering and has resigned from the House of Representatives.

The threat astounded Rankin.

“I was totally taken aback by it,” Rankin said Monday by phone. “I was not expecting it. After the last debate, she came up and said I did a good job and last night was a total reversal on her part.”

“The best response Barbara Cubin could give would be a resignation,” he said. “Nothing less than that would satisfy me.

“She is not the type of person Wyoming residents want representing them,” he said.

Ever since this incident, I’ve blamed Hugh for inflicting the Barbara Cubin incumbency on an unsuspecting nation. This is irrational, of course. But no one who knew Perky Babs, as we called her in those days, would doubt she was capable of deciding to run for Congress because of a reporter’s offhand question.

2 years ago, but still won statewide. She is such an embarrasment. I'm still shocked that we have a democrat for governor (but he'd be considered more of a republican in any other state..), except that the repub candidates just beat each other bloody during the primary. The people that I meet here cannot see past the party label - you would not believe the democrat bashing that I hear - none of it makes any sense - they just hate dems because they are dems. In fact, there's a local dem running for office and his biggest billboard says something like, "Not your ordinary democrat." What is that supposed to mean?

A couple months ago Howard Dean was in Jackson, and the dems running for office completely distanced themselves from him. One of them was quoted as saying something like, "He's here on party business and I have nothing to do with it."

On a positive note, it seems that many of the campaign signs don't have the party label on it this year, so maybe the repubs are feeling some heat.

Several years ago I attended a hearing of the Telecommunications Subcommittee of the House Energy and Commerce Commmittee. The topic was public broadcasting, and the usual witnesses were trotted out, including filmmaker Ken Burns and some angry dude from the Media Research Center.

By the time the topic drifted to the subject of a documentary concerning a school district's attempts to promote tolerance towards gays and lesbians (the kind of program PBS airs in its evening hours, and strictly for the parents and teachers, not small children), Cubin's knickers were firmly knotted. She said that they should "smack the heck" out of local PBS stations who aired that particular documentary.

Excuse me, you intrusive, small-minded shrew, but don't you dare lay one finger on the staff and volunteers at my local PBS station. So much for Republicans being in favor of local control, huh?
