With their majority in the Senate potentially hanging in the balance, Republicans were bickering among themselves over an advertisement in the particularly nasty campaign in Tennessee that even some Republicans have denounced as racist.

The dispute pitted former Chattanooga Mayor Bob Corker, the GOP candidate for the seat held by Senate Republican leader Bill Frist, against his own party leadership Tuesday after it rebuffed his call to pull the ad, which lampoons Democratic Rep. Harold Ford Jr.’s reputation as a man about town.

In the ad, a young white actress playing the stereotype of a “dumb blonde” talks about meeting Ford, a 36-year-old bachelor who is black, “at the Playboy party.” At the end of the ad, she winks and says to the camera, “Harold — call me.”

Any political leader who has appealed to the baser instincts of the people, especially in the South, has always come out victorious.

Witness Jesse Helms, George Bush the 1rst, Richard Nixon, Strom Thurmond, the list is endless.

This was smart politics for the GOP. Remind the white crackers that Ford is an uppity negro and then have the actual candidate (Corker) disown the ad in faux shock.

This is just a game he and the RNC are playing. The ad appeals to the finer "sensibilities" (*cough*) of white racist and RW Christian voters, while Corker's denials of having anything to do with it make him look good to those voters who find it distasteful. Either way, he gets votes.

Since I've not seen the ad, I can't say if it is racist or not. But the Dems aren't innocent of racisism either. The Maryland race is full of it with the Dem candidate making comments that are taken as racist by the black Repub candidate. We have to stop the hypocracy if we are going to actually be taken seriously by America.

Here in Michigan we have many minority groups claiming that the minority vote was suppressed in MI in the 2004 elections, with a lot of backing evidence. Strangely, they seem to believe that this was done by Republicans not Democrats. Notice a pattern?

This white lady had absolutely no clue what the racial part of the ad was until the scary black man sleepin' with the virginal white girl was explained. Oh yeah, okay, I remember that shit.

I'm 49, not hardly a racism denier, and the ad pissed me off because it was just plain sleazy. There really are some white people who just don't automatically think in terms of race. While we certainly know plenty who are racist, we kind of figured we'd had them schooled enough to know they needed to keep their nasty shit to themselves. So yeah, it is shocking when the bastards think they can get away with this kind of shit.

And I'll tell you something else, while there's certainly racism everywhere, the George Allen brand is absolutely stunning. I don't know anybody who thinks they can talk to other people that way. Well, except to women, men are allowed to call us anything they want, from bitch to cupcake to sugar tits, and we're just supposed to smile, serve and stick our ass out for a pinch.

The outsourcing threads have plenty of veiled racism. Any thread about China has it. I understand that people are losing jobs because of outsourcing but remarks like "Indian accents are just awful", "China is a barbaric nation" etc. seem highly uncalled for.

Why not just be mad at the politicians and corporations that are doing the outsourcing?
Its hardly like people in those countries are sitting there going "bwahahahahaha-take that American pigs". They are offered jobs and they take them.
